Oh man the BEL-NED semi is getting closer.

Both countries would lose their shit if this happened. I don't even care if we'd win or lose that, how cool would it be to get that matchup.

Neighbors, pls beat Costa Rica. We'll do the same against Argentina
Yeah, it would be pretty cool. Though tbh I wouldn't like losing against Belgium or Germany for that matter.

I'm talking as a noob on the EU leagues now, is this Jozy that good? Some of the guys that people said that were good on this WC I've heard about in my inner circle or even in the media, but not this one.

Jozy Altidore has the grace of an Albatross on land.

USA is a great country for athletes

If the sport ever gets big in the country then you'll start seeing crazy export talent and World Cup performance

I love how some Americans think if you "cared" you'd magically turn into world cup winners.

Cop out shite equal to "well we weren't even trying".

Eh, I don't think we'd magically win the cup right away or anything, but it's silly to disregard the valid point that the US would be able to field a much more competent team if soccer had more cultural relevance here. If the most athletic kids played it through high school/college instead of mostly going into football and basketball I don't doubt we'd have a much more competitive team. Nobody is saying that we could literally take LeBron or some NFL roster, have them play soccer for 6 months, and then win the World Cup. The point is that almost none of the kids who grow up with LeBron's (or whoever's) athletic ability want to play soccer when they're kids because the culture at large doesn't care for it (NOT ENOUGH POINTS! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO KNOW WHEN TO BE EXCITED IF POINTS DON'T KEEP GOING UP!)

Delusional arrogance.

Dont let delusional Americans turn you off the team though. I actually like these guys, except Altidore, after the performance today.

US fans still suck though.

You've been spouting the most inane babble throughout the history of this thread.

Huh, it makes pretty good sense to me.

Let's say 1% of the population are natural athletes. In a country where Baseball/USFootball/Basketball are the most popular sports, they will naturally pursue those sports from a very young age. Since they pursue them from a young age, they naturally build their physical attributes around what the game requires.

If football was the most popular sport in the US, those naturally gifted athletes would pursue the sport from a young age, and would be more built for the sport when they grow up.

It's not a real argument.

Naturally, if football was the most popular sport in the US, the US would be better at football. And if Brazil didn't care about football, and basketball was the national sport, we'd be better at basketball.

"Yeah, we'd be better at football if we were better at football!" - you don't say.

And physical attributes are not as relevant as you may think on this level of play. Talent is what matters, so it's not like people could jump from sport to sport and be equally good at them. That's the reason why it's always a big deal when an Olympic athlete wins a medal in two different sports.

That's my point. He's not that good at all. He's effective at chasing lost causes and holding up play. But he doesn't score enough goals and is severely lacking in pure finishing.

The team in an attacking sense was built around that very limited set of abilities...which tells you that the attacking options were not very many at all.

USA won a single game in this competition and were out played and chased too many games and ultimately paid the price for a lack of creativity.

Not necessarily but I guarantee you we have a lot of athletes who could be great soccer players who are instead struggling in other sports which they aren't as good at. They never gave soccer a chance because it isn't the atmosphere they grew up in.
Again being atheltic isn't an automatic win. You need skill above all else to make it.

That makes zero sense. Do you also think xavi would be great at basketball, american football and whatever else?

Being "atheltic" is a small part of the game especially at the top.

Athleticism is a catchall. When you think of Xavi he might not be an athletic marvel, but he is very skillful. Lebron James for instance is both an athletic marvel, and supremely skillful at what he does. Someone like Peyton Manning is a not terribly athletic, but skilled and has an IQ for the game beyond most anyone in the world. They come in all variations really.

If Americans devoted their talent pool towards soccer, it's not a leap of faith to think that we could produce skillful athletes that could rival what anyone else puts out. It has a basis in reality because we see it in all the sports and events the US participates in.

All this talk about football made me buy Football Manager '14 (since I suck at Fifa). The last one that I played I remember seeing the players as circles kicking the ball around. Technology is a wonderful mistress.

We can only hope. Do other countries have football teams for high schools? My HS team had American football teams every time. Even some MS teams. Crazy how much you Americans care about the game.

Good showing and better luck next time :)

That free kick was damn creative. To bad it didn't pay off.

We need more players play their club football in Europe that's for sure.

They have to be good enough to hack it in the top European leagues. Finding talent and developing it has to start at childhood like they do it in the big footballing nations. The earlier we get to them, the more likely we can keep them from being poached by all our other sports too.

Unlucky US, your team gave it a good shot and with a bit of luck could have taken it to a penalty shoot out.
Hope your domestic game kicks on to the next level.

You don't allow 30 attempts at scoring in 90 minutes by playing good defense, mate.

If our midfield can't do anything with the ball in the last 2/3rds of the pitch then our defense has their work cut out for them. Except for a few shocking errors, they mostly did the best they could given that we had only one performer (Yedlin) outside of the defensive line.

Atheltics mean very little by themselves in football. Failing to see that is a fundamental error of understanding the game of football.

Like Lance Armstrong am I right?

More important that the number of raw athletes I think the US has to improve the quality of youth coaching, which is still pretty bad. Something that is improving is that I see more kids playing pickup soccer. We've got to get more natural at passing and dribbling, we're still quite a ways behind even some of the teams that we beat in that regard.

Pretty sure HS sports is only really a thing in the US. Professional football teams have youth teams from like 9 years+.

You guys need better chants too. I believe that we will win is cray cray

Yeah they need some quality swearing in there to fit in. Either that or some genuine classics like

‘He’s blond, he’s quick
His name’s a porno flick, Emmanuel! Emanuel!’

‘Who ate all the pies, who ate all the pies? You fat bastard, you fat bastard, you ate all the pies!’

"His name is Rio and he watches from the stand"
Rio Ferdinand faced this chant after he was banned for missing a drugs test in 2003, sung to the tune of 'Rio' by Duran Duran

"Your teeth are offside, your teeth are offside, Luis Suarez, your teeth are offside"
Manchester United fans singing about Liverpool forward Luis Suarez's large gnashers

"You only live round the corner"
Fulham fans sing to Manchester United supporters during their 2-0 win in the 2008/9 season.

Shamelessly knicked from various websites.

Right. The pool of "athletes" is big enough and growing every year. The development needs to get better. I think it is, buts definitely a long term project.

Not really. Most kids/teenagers that will go on to play professionally will join a club's academy. High school sports teams aren't really a big deal/sometimes non-existent.

Midfielders have to defend too.

Defending is a team effort and it was a poor effort looking at the stats.

I hope players like Yedlin don't get stuck in MLS. I'd love to see what European football will do for their footballing education.

Really glad Klinsi's bringing a European mindset to talent evaluation and team building.

i would agree with this. Yes, I know nothing about football but , USA seems to lack ability on the first-touch. It seems to us longer to create and so many touches are just given away because the technique is just slightly lacking.

I still played for my high school when I was with St Mirren to get out of class for tournaments lol

Is it really smart to make fun of Luis Suarez's teeth? I would be a bit scared of them myself...

So do you think Messi was born a skillful football player and Lebron born a skillful basketball player? No one is saying that you could take the athletic players from NFL/NBA etc. and turn them into good football players, but that if you look at the kids who are in high school now that have potential too be great football players, in the US they are mostly going to go into other sports because football doesn't have a long history here like it does in other countries.

Ummm...You do know that things like technical ability, hand/foot/eye coordination, stamina, etc. still count as athleticism, right? Unless you think the only reason American football and basketball players are considered athletes is because of their physical build.

The point is that more of our young athletes who have natural talent would grow up practicing/learning the technical skills for soccer if it was more popular.

If anyone honestly thinks soccer being super popular in the US would not result in a more competitive national team a few years down the line, I don't know what to tell you.

I did the same thing and was similarly shocked at the upgrade. I think it only makes it more frustrating though when you watch your players smash the ball wide from six yards out, I'd probably prefer the ambiguity of the dots.
