iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

Anyone having trouble or downloading past or new purchases in the App Store? I'm on a 5s... Just updated and now I can download anything from the cloud or buy anything new. I'm on 7.1.2

EDIT: iTunes as well it seems.

EDIT: weird seems to be working now

The only bad thing about XCOM on iOS is that it didn't get the expansion (Enemy Within), and doesn't seem like it will (max file size)

Could they possibly release Enemy Within as a separate game on IOS, and have it perform some sort of check that they bought the original XCOM before letting them play? I don't know if apps can do that though...

Well, I was going to finally post my impressions on Civ Rev 2 but it seems everyone already has the gist of it. It's basically Civ Rev 1 with some graphical upgrades and some new bells and whistles thrown in. If you liked Civ Rev 1 or never played it and have no way to play the civ games on PC then maybe the game might interest you. Unfortunately though, a substitute for the real Civ games it is not.

They could let you download it from their servers from within XCOM as an IAP. Telltale does that with the episodes for Walking Dead and Wolf Among Us. But maybe they just don't wanna invest in the server infrastructure to allow that

Birthday Cake looks really swank, thanks for making my $50 iTunes card evaporate, GAF.

A friend in Singapore tried to play Sword and Poker Adventures but it kept crashing on his iPod Touch. Anyone else get it working?

I want Monster Hunter but I don't have a controller for my iPad. Though I heard it controls pretty swell with touch controls on the pad. Anyone can confirm?

Lots of complaining about the price on $15 games here, games that would cost $40-$60 on other platforms. You guys know you're the reason we get all this f2p shit?

Lots of complaining? I didn't really see that at all.

edit: If this was somehow directed towards me in regards to my comment about Monster Hunter, let me just stop you right there. I've spent hundreds of dollars on quality mobile games and I don't plan to stop. I've also never spent a single dime on a cash-grabbing f2p monstrosity. I said what I said in regards to Monster Hunter's price because it's a port of a 5 year old PSP game that I've played to death and to me, personally, it's not quite worth that asking price. For newcomers I'd easily recommend it if it's up to snuff, however.

You seem to be under the impression that the ios platform was home to a number of complex full priced titles that failed, leading to F2P.

This is not correct.

F2P grew on the platform because people spent money on it, which has little to do with the issue at hand. Now we are seeing an increasing number of higher priced titles appear and people in this thread have jumped all over them when the occasion calls for it (FTL!)

In these cases, Civ Rev 2 offers only very incremental improvements over a significantly cheaper title. We didn't price that, 2K did and it is up to them to present an effective value proposition.

A game like Monster Hunter? Unproven on the platform especially without a dedicated controller. By all means spend your money and give us all impressions, but $19 is still $19 (for me) and I'll hesitate no matter what the platform is.

Worth the money, but I'm not buying because I'm fairly confident that it will get a limited time discount at some point in the future. Street Fighter IV, Ghost Trick and Phoenix Wright all did.

You only need to get to feel purchase regret when a higher priced game gets discounted after you have brought it a couple of times before you become wary.

I'm not sure about other platforms, but on PS3 at least it's a standalone game. In app downloading is so janky that I wouldn't want to downlaod a couple of gigs through it. And even more, I don't want XCOM to be double the size on my machine.

But I really want Enemy Within. Such cockteases giving us the first game but not the 'sequel'.

The only reason that I haven't bought xcom on iOS is because the low odds of Enemy Within making it there. Can't play the game without the expansion now (played the heck out of it on pc)

With the constant price drops to much less or free happening everyday on iOS (yesterday I bought a 1.99$ game on launch -the second it was out- that became free the next hour...), no wonder why people are so hesitant these days. On the other hand, I dont see Battlefield 4 -for example- dropping the price to half or free the next week after it releases.

At least Monster Hunter is a great port, it actually runs at 60fps with improved visuals, supports controllers, features multiplayer and basically does everything right unlike DQ8. At least I haven't read any real negatives about Monster Hunter while DQ8 had a ton of them (par for the course for a SE port).

For anyone on the Canadian App Store, Threes! is currently free at Starbucks!

I already picked up a bunch of codes for anyone who can't make it down, shoot me a PM if you want Threes! for free.

I already own it so can't test, but apparently free Rayman Fiesta Run?

Worked for me, thanks for the heads up!

Speaking to the discussion about premium games, as a new iOS initiate I'm happy to pay for a quality title and appreciate the opportunity to do so when available. The two things that keep serving to remind me that I'm not on a "gaming first" platform are the fact that even some of the premium apps I've purchased will still pop ads (though admittedly for other titles by the publisher/developer) and tons of titles still gate content behind a Facebook login when they could just as easily use Gamecenter integration for multi/social features.

I'm interested in Monster Hunter so it's good to know it's a decent port. Never managed to get into it on the PSP for a variety of reasons (even local co-op sessions were a mess), but the concept still intrigues me.

On waiting for a price drop, it's like dreamcastmaster said: it's not because it's too high, it's because drops are just too frequent and often relatively close to release. With the amount of games I have available to play, there's simply no reason to rush. This is the same way I act with Steam, so it's definitely not a mobile thing (although seeing things get a discount or go free sometimes days after release on iOS certainly adds to the approach). Very few releases make me jump in on day one/full price, no matter if it's $10 or $60.

Thanks for the heads up.

For anyone wondering, this seems to work internationally (worked on my BR account at least).

I keep playing Trials Frontier and I have no idea why. This game's free-to-play and grinding mechanics are so insidious. But... it's Trials.

I used to play that bullshit of a game, every single day even, for like two months. And then it hit me: it's horrendous. I stopped and never looked back. Fuck the luck-based objectives, fuck the waiting, fuck the ridiculous prices for everything, fuck everything. I loved Trails 2 back in the day; this is just bullshit.

I'm really glad they don't display how many hours you put into iOS games. It would probably be depressing how long I've spent re-doing the same tracks over and over to hopefully spin for the right item.

Cool style! I'll definitely give it a spin. The iTunes links on the post is broken though, I fetched the right one on the official site.

Some recent under-the-radar games that I'm enjoying

Collect power-ups to help you on the road to victory. Winning only takes one thing, just wait…. and RELEASE! Both Battle of the Bulge and Drive on Moscow are down from $9.99 to $2.99 each (4th of July sale)

Did anyone lose progress in a game after updating to 7.1.2? I'm back to zero on Infinity Blade II, and iCloud is not remedying anything.

My game just came out for iPad so I suppose it's time to leave the warm confines of the indiegaf dev thread and talk about it here.

Ephemerid: A Musical Adventure - 3.99 (iPad)

Ephemerid: A Musical Adventure is a rock fairy tale created especially for your iPad. In Ephemerid, you will help a simple mayfly find its destiny through the power of music. The game combines hand-cut paper art, rock guitar and elements of rhythm and adventure games to create the interactive-rock-opera-concept-album-about-paper-insects that you never knew you needed.

The game is sort of a deconstruction of rhythm gameplay (like Rockband or Elite Beat Agents) combined with some light point-and-click adventure elements. Every song has a different gameplay interaction. It's hard to describe, but I will try to answer any questions.

Oh and almost all of the art is paper that I have spent the last 2.5 years cutting out by hand, so there's that.

I've bought it and finished it in almost one sitting. It was a fantastic experience and I thought the songs were incredible. Thank you!

Awesome. We really liked the idea of making a game that was "one-sitting-able".

My partner Matt, who did the music and the code, is crazy talented. One of the reasons I wanted to make a music game was to force him to share his music!

A bit bummed that Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville didn't get enough attention here and in the OT. Such a fun game.

I feel for Luke at RadianGames.
Guy makes such great games but seems destined to never be truly successful at it.

Some of his blog posts are pretty depressing.

That's a bit of a tough sell though. I like radiangames but I don't know if i can bring myself to play it. I'm a 31 year old man fercrissakes. I'd never have looked twice at this if you hadn't pointed it out.

I guess so. I really don't care about Powerpuff Girls, but Metroidvania + shmup is right up my alley.
