iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

A bit bummed that Powerpuff Girls: Defenders of Townsville didn't get enough attention here and in the OT. Such a fun game.

Here's the AppStore link https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/powerpuff-girls-defenders/id793336661?mt=8p

And I agree with the license working against it. At first glance, it looks like a throwaway licensed game with no substance, and it doesn't even list Radiangames as the developer. And then there's the theme of the game, which I wouldn't feel comfortable playing in a crowded metro as a grown-ass man.

Yeah I was a little uncomfortable playing this with my wife by my side, haha. She didn't pay much attention though.

Just hide yourself somewhere and play it. It's worth it. It won't take long anyway, it's a short but sweet kind of game.

Fucking fuck! Star Wars the knights of the old republic just crashed and deleted my save. Only lost an hour and a half of progress but sure annoying to have to do it all again.

That Power Puff game is pretty sweet. I finished it on PC when it released recently. I imagine it works well with touch - as it plays almost like a shmup.

I didn't see a Fates Forever dedicated thread. I'd like to group up with some Gaffers. Add me: Duke Maverick
I was there when they first announced the game but then it seemed to completely drop off the radar. Just noticed it released so I'm definitely going to take the game of a spin!

Another month, another pro-IOS thread getting shit on...sigh

Here's my response. This is probably a better place for discussion than that thread:
Get the fuck out of here with this "the future of gaming" and "best place to play games" shit.

You like it, fine. But this complex that mobile game fans have like the rest of us have no choice, were going to come kicking and screaming with you into the apple utopia and learn to love it needs to be stopped.
What complex? I'm sorry, but that is some pretty backwards thinking

I've played on console since I was a kid. I love PC gaming. And I love IOS gaming. I probably play IOS and PC games equally

IOS isn't the best platform by a long shot and I certainly don't think it's the future of gaming. But it is a viable platform with many great games. Yes, it's infested with shovelware and clones and shit like that, but there are dozens of great original games from developers who actually care about making good games, not sucking wallets dry with some offensive business model

As for PC gaming, it's quite hypocritical to point at Steam when PC gaming is far more encompassing than that. The hundreds, thousands of flash games and freeware games make up PC gaming too. How can one say IOS is nothing but crap, shallow, shovelware compared to other platforms when PC has an equally wide selection of quick shallow games, shovelware titles, shitty flash games, and poorly made freeware titles. And just like PC, there are the quality experiences that stand out from the rest

What frustrates me, and I'm sure it's what drove the OP to make this thread, is how IOS is so quickly dismissed when there are good games, games that play to the strengths of that platform, by closed minded individuals who only play a few games and think that represents all the platform has to offer or can offer

Personally I think the opinion that touch controls always sucks is subjective more than anything else. I can play games with touch controls just fine. I hated mouse and keyboard when I first got into PC gaming. Hated it. It was uncomfortable. Playing FPS's with a mouse was just unwieldly and frustrating. Using the keyboard and trying to move while also pressing shift and/or controls was like twister with my fingers. Now after playing PC games for a year, mouse and keyboard is my favorite control scheme. And yet even now, I still prefer analogue sticks for shooters.

So I think that the hate for touch controls is more of idk, simply being used to other controls. I was playing IOS games for longer than I have spent as a serious PC gamer, thus touch controls feel natural, and intitutive for some games. Hell, I was able to beat Veni Vidi Venci in VVVVVV

Uh, he said it's not the future of gaming and you agreed with him. Yeah, he just wants to argue but still. Mobile games are fun these days, most people know that, I play a lot on my iPhone but I'll still be right up there in the argument that it still has control problems with a lot of ports that come over. It's still a selective amount of games that work best on mobile.

Not entirely sure what to make of that thread, antagonizing messaging in the title and OP. Also seems to serve double duty to these threads and the Hidden Gems thread.
I hadn't been able to read the whole OP since I was on my phone before, but yeah now that I have, the poster really took the wrong approach. If I were to make a thread like that, you're not going to appeal to the hearts and minds of jaded PC gamers with an antagonistic tone and claiming IOS is the future of gaming.

Just completed the new Hitman GO levels.

Whoever came up with the idea to use the franchise as a 'tilt shifted' modular puzzle/boardgame is a genius.

Super Pixellander is great in an addicting "just one more time" way! More people need to play this game!

Reminds me of Super Crate Box in that there are different weapon types you get randomly, etc which can make or break a run.

EDIT: oh and my highscore is currently 26

Oh boy am I tempted by Monster Hunter, PowerPuff Girls and Hitman Go. Haven't bought a mobile game for months, since I build my first Gaming PC and got hooked on Steam.

Yeah, I completed the new levels as well just now and pretty much agree 100%. I was also surprised to see the new levels being unlocked from the go since I had the Blood Money levels locked before the patch, but now both scenarios were actually unlocked (and I even had my money ready to unlock them).

Pro-tip: turn off "embed youtube videos" in mobile-GAF preferences to view that OP

My interest kind of waned once I started unlocking hats instead of weapons. I also felt that you change weapons at such a rapid pace that the different types don't feel very important. But besides that, it's still a great twitch game

My current Super Crate Box-like addiction is Buzz Killem. I actually think it's even better than Super Crate Box. Tons of weapons, power ups, costumes that give stat boosts, tight controls, cool arenas. It's really fun

Waiting on a a sale to pick that up. I've gone over my bubblegum quota for the moment.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'm so far behind on games I actually own that I'm in a permanent "wait for sale" mode, save for something particularly awesome coming out.

As far as I know the new levels are always free if you have a certain number of 'stars' achieved.
You pay for them only in case you want them unlocked even without playing the previous levels.
It's not even necessary to have everything fully starred.

Iap done right, if I may say that (and yeah I was fully prepared to pay too).

Yeah, I know. But last time I played pre-patch, I didn't have enough stars for the Blood Money levels, but post-patch both that and the new levels were surprisingly unlocked. So I wonder if they decreased the number of stars required...?

Btw, who developed the game, the same people who did the original Hitman games or someone else?

I think it was Square Enix Montreal, the new studio who's making the Hitman mobile games. But some of the ideas come from IO Interactive.

I'll just play Monster Hunter with touch then. Not gonna plop down 50+ dollars on a controller I might not use for anything else. Thanks for the link though JMTHEFOX.

What else of the newer stuff is worth picking up besides the ones I mentioned above?

I'm on iPhone.

Micromonsters is supposed to release soon I see.

What is blocking official use of DS3 / DS4 on iOS? It has been available via jailbreak. As a consumer, that is what I want to play games with, not these junky controllers we've seen.

Apple can't charge a license fee on those controllers.

Yeah it really sucks. My question is why isn't there an option for non-jailbroken devices? There was a Nintendo DS/GBA emulator for non-jailbroken devices that was floating around a few months ago on the forum, so why can't someone make something to use DS3 controllers with and just not put it on the appstore?

*I know that the talk about that talk about that emulator is frowned upon, but it is the only example I can think of of something that was not allowed by Apple but somehow made its way to non-jailbroken devices.

Welp, I moved back to the iPad after a short stint as a Note owner. Is there anything must play that I missed in the past 3 months?

Look at the OPs for the past three threads. You can do it in like 5 clicks from this page.

Look man, not trying to turn this into a thing, but we're on a discussion forum. I asked a perfectly relevant question. There are games that slip by, get updates that change gameplay, games that people whose opinions mirror my own suggest, etc that make it a valid question to ask. I didn't ask for a list of every game in every OP for a reason. I'm looking to see if there was maybe a game or two that is something that just rocked the iOS landscape - something that if you own a Apple thingy it must played. If this is the wrong thread to ask, that's fine, but this response is not exactly helpful.

Considering grabbing one of the Steel Series iPad controllers for stuff like MH, Terraria and probably MC5 when it gets support (if not day one).

I know they are overpriced, but that isn't going to change imho.

Not helpful, but funny to me nonetheless. The whole idea of these threads is that they exist as a record of what was good in iOS month to month. They are DESIGNED for YOU. Tuney puts in hard work to make beautiful and relevant OPs each month. The advice to read the OPs is absolutely perfect. Here, cos I'm lovely I've linked them. If you actually click on these links, you will see some good games, I promise.

Personally, I've only been playing Baldur's Gate, 99 Bricks, Threes and Wayward Souls for the past few months. Republique was good too.

edit: in response to your last sentences, no I don't think there's been anything earth shattering lately.
