iOS Gaming July 2014: With Sunburned iOS Devices And Sweaty Fingers All Around

Look man, not trying to turn this into a thing, but we're on a discussion forum. I asked a perfectly relevant question. There are games that slip by, get updates that change gameplay, games that people whose opinions mirror my own suggest, etc that make it a valid question to ask. I didn't ask for a list of every game in every OP for a reason. I'm looking to see if there was maybe a game or two that is something that just rocked the iOS landscape - something that if you own a Apple thingy it must played. If this is the wrong thread to ask, that's fine, but this response is not exactly helpful.
Just to piggy back off Jedeye, trust us, read through the OPs. They're exactly what you're looking for: collections of noteworthy games, recommended by the community here, with impressions from GAFfers

To answer you directly, two games I always recommend are Incoboto and Penumbear. Two of the best platformers on the IOS IMO. They're games that I could easily see being on PSN or Wii

99 Bricks is God Tier.

MH on iPad is one of the most significant releases of all time for me:

- Shows that solid ports by big studios can be done
- Is premium with no IAP
- Has controller support
- Is a title with potentially hundreds if not thousands of hours there

The controller API hasn't taken off as well as I hoped, imagine Hotline Miami or Spelunky in iOS with said support..

Yeah, I know. But last time I played pre-patch, I didn't have enough stars for the Blood Money levels, but post-patch both that and the new levels were surprisingly unlocked. So I wonder if they decreased the number of stars required...?

Btw, who developed the game, the same people who did the original Hitman games or someone else?

Fates Forever just released, if you have a ipad and don't have this game and like RTS type games get it asap. I've been playing it for a couple of days and i'm pretty addicted. It's also free and very generous with its' IAP. You don't have to worry about weird "slow down " times or buying something to progress.

The controls really are that tight, huh?
Yeah, they're really solid. But don't just take my word for it :p

AppSpy
The controls are so smooth you start to wonder if the game is secretly reading your mind

iFanzine
The first thing I am going say about Penumbear is that Taco Graveyard definitely made sure they got the most important part of any jumping based game correct: the accuracy of the controls.

ArcadeSushi
Poor controls are a death sentence for any platformer and thankfully Penumbear doesn’t disappoint in this department. The controls are very simple and self explanatory. Thankfully they are perfectly responsive and allow you to make daring leaps across shadowy chasms without those tentacles rising up and tearing your stuffing out.

99 Bricks is great (I finished all the basic challenges) but the wonky physics does my head in a bit. I wish the devs had taken into account that if I have "perfect" block placement, there should not be a single wiggle or slope anywhere in the tower. It seems that the starting blocks are shaped ever so slightly differently from the tetris pieces meaning that right from the start you can't build a properly structurally sound base.

I thought this was just me, noticed the exact same thing, even when you line up perfectly it can still leave a gap.

God it feels good to be back on iPad. That Android thing just ain't for me. Having all the Spiderweb games I downloaded back is like seeing family again.

Btw, if you like RPGs and you haven't tried out Avernum, you're wrong.

I am honestly shocked at how good Fates Forever is. I'd still rather play Dota when I can, but if I'm just chilling on the couch or out and about, it's a solid MOBA experience. Really surprising for a tablet game.

Haven't been keeping up with new stuff lately, so it might be kinda old, but I'm liking Piano Tiles. Simple and quick games.

Downloaded a bunch of new games.

99 Bricks - not for me

Out There - fantastic game!

Sky Force - well, what's the point of this game... oh... okay... hmm... 10 hours later, this game is strangely addictive.

Battle Tactics - this game is pretty fun but I grew a bit bored relatively fast. I just didn't have the time to build up my tanks, but I think I'll come back to it.

Has there been enough good things said about The Room 2? Because I feel it is quite brilliant.

On sale for $1 at the moment. Get it.

Yeah, I'm with ya. Grabbed it after seeing everyone digging it and it's definitely cool, but the wonky physics make it difficult for me to care too much about how I build my tower.

Still, it's a larf innit.

Is Puzzle & Dragons and Sword & Poker 2 great games?

EDIT:
Got them both already.

Btw, it doesn't seem these iOS threads are as active as they used to be a year ago or when we started out with the monthly format.

What happened?

I stopped posting and reading as much, because, for me, most of the games being released don't satisfy me. There are many gorgeous and fun games coming out, but I just don't get the same satisfaction anymore compared to playing a console game.

I love both games, I feel they're the poster children for iPad gaming (along Bejeweled but that's super personal).

At $1, every iPad owner should get them.

Has the Groove Coaster Zero DLC ever gone on sale? I'm hooked and was just wondering if $5 a pop is as cheap as I'm likely to see the song packs.

Just got an iPad Air, had a couple questions about some games.

I hear FTL is awesome...but it looks super overwhelming with the UI being so heavy. Is it really that fun for strategy gamers? And I was looking into Wayward Souls, any good?

It is extremely fun. Not so much for "strategy" gamers, but for "tactical strategy" players - as in you're strategically thinking about how to dismantle the opposing ship's systems in order to win battles, and you're also constantly making risk/reward decisions.

Believe me, it's one of the best games you can get on the iPad or any system. The UI isn't overwhelming on the mere fact that you can pause and continue.

Wayward Souls is good, and might be worth purchasing now as they've guaranteed it go up in price, but it hasn't really grabbed me in a tenth of a way that FTL ever has.

FTL is literally a desert island game for me at this point.

Well, FTL is awesome and you don't have to worry about it being overwhelming.

Of course you will be overwhelmed, quite often in fact, but this is because of the enemies and not the interface. It is actually quite simple and you will pick it all up during your first game or two.

Wayward Souls gets a lot of support. However I thought it was pretty ordinary and it failed to grip me in any way.

You'll get used to the controls rather quickly.

Waywards Souls is ok in my opinion.

Downloaded Fates Forever. Is it more casual than the usual MOBA or will I get people on my team hating me for not dedicating my life to getting good at it?

Only a handful of packs have gone on sale, and at very selective times. The vast majority of packs have never been discounted.

Over the last year, only Arcade Packs 1 and 2 and Mega Hits Pack have ever gone on sale a couple of times. Going back further, niconico Music Pack 1, the Original Packs, the Game Packs, and the COSIO Pack have been discounted, but not recently.

Speaking of music games, Cytus has another major update. Played through it today - it's ten free songs based on the "story" of the game (previously released on a soundtrack album), and a new chapter based on the "backstory" of one song from one of the earlier chapters. Kind of unexpected.

The free "story" songs are some of the longest songs in the game, and clearly weren't composed with gameplay in mind (although the title screen music is finally playable). The new "Chapter K" is like the existing Chapter S, being very musically focused on a specific story.

There is a surprising "storytelling" aspect to this update - now images and text can pop up in the middle of a song.

Few games went on sale: Blek is back to $.99 and Threes dropped down to the same price.

Monument Valley also dropped to $1.99, first price drop according to Appshopper.

I'm really loving this game. My first MOBA ever, and I can see why people get so hooked on it.

Yea, it's my first MOBA that I legit like. I read some of the info on the company and I also like how they say they are really trying to change the mobile gaming market by not nickle and dimeing you with IAP's.

I share the love for Fates Forever too, really fun and certainly incredibly well done.

Not a proper MOBA, but similar...if you follow these instructions on Pocket Tactics you can download the beta (regardless of your location) of Ember Conflict.

VERY fast games...if you play till level 8 (a matter of less than half an hour) you will unlock the maps..including the ones with control spots (king of the hill like) and 2 vs 2 matches.

It's really well done, great graphics too.

Ah!!! The thought of Baldur's Gate 3 or a new Icewind Dale with a similar and so slick engine....

MMX Racing is my new F2P obsession. Fucking Monster Truck Drag Racing. Doesn't get any better than that.

Gameplay is typically 'streamlined'. Hold the revs for the start and then floor it. Lift off as the truck leaves a jump, hammer down as soon as the tyres hit the floor. Rinse and repeat for 6 months worth of cig breaks. Sweet.

I'm going to complete the game. Unlike my usual F2P crusades though, I'm probably going to end up spending money. I've made my peace with it.

Hey, does anyone know when the Blood Bowl port releases on iOS?

I had a press release emailed to me last week saying 'early July' but just wondered if anyone had heard anything since.

I have a bunch of friends mad for the game and scavenging every forum about it or Games Workshop things, but they do not anything else.

Bloow Bowl official iOS version page

I think they submitted it so it could be out this week or next one.

We will know in 2 hours tough, if it's this week.

Is anyone here by any chance in the The Witcher Adventure beta? (I'm not, yet at least).

If yes...can you talk? :P

I'm curious about the game....I fear it will be out after the summer, to build up hype for Witcher 3....but you never know.

How's the iPad version of Baldurs Gate 2? I have it on PC, but would like to play it on the go... But it's not cheap...

It's decent, not perfect but decent.

The issues I had:

Spell's are a pain as you can't easily see what they are without the mouse-over.
Bugs: no fixes so far, it's almost abandon-ware, the circus tent bug is still there months later.

If you don't want to play on PC, it's worth it just to play arguably the greatest RPG of all time, and for the money it's ridiculous value, over 100 hours of actual content (not grinding).

I'm currently on the final fight of Shadows of Amn and I've been having a blast. Steve is right in that probably the most annoying part of the game is the lack of mouseover for spells - after 50 or so hours you will get a pretty good handle on what tiny icon means what though, I've not felt it held me back too much. I've not noticed much in the way of gamekilling bugs either, BG2EE is much more stable than 1 was.

I really can't recommend it highly enough, everyone needs to play it.

Upgraded to an iPhone 5c from my iPhone 4. Finally I can play The Room Two and Asphalt 8 and Bastion. I'm trying to think of other games that I might have missed; it'll be a short list since I've played a ton of games.
