You're assuming I'm a casual here. The "real men use items" 'meme' is pretty tongue-in-cheek. I'm just saying that the top minority clamoring for separatist exclusivity and dominance in contrast to the vocal minority WITHIN the majority clamoring for inclusive traits speaks volumes. Let's say that the "real men use items" crowd was serious? That just creates another branch of elitism with a different ruleset, i.e. they're not 'true casuals' because they've formed a concrete opinion. It just so happens that in this specific scenario (smash bros) that the top players have a ruleset that opposes the forementioned ruleset andthose pushing the opinion have forfeited their status as a 'casual participant' as a result.
I don't think we're on the same page here. This has nothing to do with Smash 4 or how the game should be made or anything like that. I'm talking about the general hatred of competitive Smash by the greater public. That's where the casual elitist talk is stemming from. This is the article that spurred everything. Prime example:

Some random douche said:
I love Melee. That was THE game to play when I was in college. I bombed my buddies' stupid wave dashing Foxes right off of Final Destination with Link soooooo many times... I'll say to you what I said to all my friends:

Wave dashing, L-cancelling, and "no items" SHATTERS any semblance of balance the game was supposed to have. If those three things aren't used, the game is actually incredibly balanced, and — I can't stress this next part enough — THE BEST PLAYER STILL PRETTY MUCH ALWAYS WINS. All those things do is make the game less interesting and harder to play. Period, end of story.

Oh, and you know what I mean when I say "casual". I'm talking about people who just play the game for fun and aren't into advanced tactics and all that jazz.

Can't say I disagree. Game obviously was primarily balanced with items in mind and 4 players as that's what most people play SSB like (how else can you explain moves like Falcon/Warlock punch which absolutely rule in 4 player matches but are beyond useless in 1vs1). I also agree with the statement that the better player still wins the majority of all games. Language is maybe a bit over the top, but it's a comment section and similar language also has been used from the other side - meh.

Him 'destroying' his friends using Advanced Techniques is anecdotal evidence and basically means nothing and thus shouldn't incite any anger.

Getting angered by that comment? Persecution complex in full effect here. I agree that some other comments are more hateful, but the extremely exclusive attitude of the competitive scene a few years ago caused that in first place, so "you reap what you sow" in full effect, I guess.

ah that he did but chrom also has other classes he has access to in his games which i do still think opens up some possibilities for his moveset to be honest
If you're talking about Lords with multiple weapon types Sigurd deserves a mention for being the only Lord to be able to wield lances and swords from the get go. He's also the only Lord to start off fully promoted and subjectively completely OP.

weekend smashgaf is boring :(

Well, I don't think we would get a lot of new informations over the time with POTD but I'm not complaints since I really like the updates that way. Anyway I wonder if we are going to get low counts of stages this time due to split versions.

Hahaha

I was like "who the fuck is that clinging to him"

Then I just saw it was Soren. Perfect.

Didn't even catch that. Nice!

Also...
64:
1. Wario
2. Bowser
3. Zelda
4. Mewtwo
5. Any NES Rep (Mac, Pit, Marth, etc.)

Melee:
1. Wario
2. Diddy
3. Mac
4. Banjo & Kazooie ( :( )
5. Samurai Goroh (Only because Ridley wasn't overarching yet so Metroid lacked a 2nd viable rep)

Brawl:
1. Mac
2. Villager
3. Ridley
4. Isaac
5. Samurai Goroh

SSB4 (May be over zealous but...)
1. Ridley
2. Isaac
3. Samurai Goroh
4. Dixie/K. Rool
5. Mona/Captain Syrup

1. Falcon Punch is not useless in 1v1, unless you're talking about Brawl. In both Smash 64 and Melee there are reliable ways to combo into it.
2. What I'm angry at is ignorance. It's been like this ever since the beginning, even going way back to the "Smash isn't a fighting game" days.
3. Competitive Smash is a persecuted community compared to pretty much every other competitive fanbase aside from League of Legends (who are constantly attacked by DotA players). No other fanbase has this many flame wars.
4. "But the extremely exclusive attitude of the competitive scene a few years ago caused that in first place"? Blanket statements are no one's friend. There are competitive elitists just as much as there are casual elitists, and both are an unfortunate vocal minority.

Yeah, I hate people who talk like that. Luckily nobody ever takes them seriously, so you can just kind of ignore them. Just let em blow off some steam.

Sounds like some people didn't see the post that said something like "Home-Run Contest is a mode that will be in Smash Bros 3DS" or some such.
Does it say exclusive to 3DS?

Here: "For Glory is a mode that will be in Smash Bros 3DS"
And here: "Smash Run is a mode that will be exclusive to Smash Bros 3DS"

Whoops. Forgot that one. :p

But ever since Melee, home-run has been a staple. Doubt it will be removed on the next Smash games (including cross-platforms like the current Smash).
Yeah, needs to be in (and yes, I know it already is). We also really need character specific break the targets and board the platforms back.

One day, you'll get that Santa Alt, Rosalina....

Where are those pictures from? I've never seen Rosalina with stars really pronounced like that.

I think it's a Brawl mod that alters the character's select screen portait, specifically of a fan rendition of her dress. Of course this is a high quality one. Santa Rosalina is surprisingly a popular one.

Or it could be fan art all together.

As a competitive-American, I can't help but feel this oppression has gone too far

That picture doesn't really work though, because its obviously not current. Anyone who's still playing Brawl online would have to be using some kind of hack, and anyone who cares enough about Smash to hack their game wouldn't seriously say that.

I hacked my game and I still believe real men use items.

Also C stickers go home.

Edit: Oh I see. And yeah, I've wanted a Santa Rosalina alt ever since I saw Fire Rosalina in 3D World. :lol

Not that I disagree with the intent behind this declaration (to prevent thread shitting from people who get just a bit too heated on both sides), but as these threads have sort of taken on aspects of being both hype threads for Smash 4 and a general Super Smash Bros. NeoGAF community thread, I'd hope that we could actually talk about these things so long as people remain respectful. Splintering or stifling the discussion just feels counterproductive.

Try being a male heterosexual, white, conservative Christian competitive Smash player.

The oppression I face on a daily basis from society as a whole is unimaginable.

What is this from? :O

Yeah, if we get rid of that, we might as well make people stop posting about tournaments as well.

the "5 gods" thing is the most anoying thing tho
Why? Every fighting game has its' gods, Street Fighter for instance has 'Japan's five gods' as well. It's not like anyone's worshipping them, it's short-hand for the most skilled players of the game.

I dunno, I don't follow any other gaming competitive communities. It just sounds incredibly lame as when people use it seriously in a sentence. "Top 5" does the same thing and doesn't sound lame at all.

Just because you make the topic doesn't mean you have a right to direct discussion like you are "the boss" of this thread or something. Unless the mods explicitly come in here and tell us to knock it off I think we can self-regulate our discussions just fine.

Is there legitimate authority behind this statement?
