Monster Hunter Freedom Unite for iOS looking likely for Western release [Up: Out now]

Got this working on my iPad 2 by installing via iFunBox. Works flawlessly on it, too.
Thanks for the confirmation! I was super disappointed to see it listed as incompatible for my 16GB iPod Touch 5th gen, while other models were fine. I suspected there was no good reason for this-- as the 16GB model is just as capable hardware-wise when running games-- and sure enough the game works fine after installing it using ifunbox. It runs at 30fps 99% of the time with the occasional frameskip.

I haven't tested online and I'm not sure if the game will update from my "incompatible" iPod, or if I'll have to reinstall it every time using ifunbox. But even if I can only play it single player on an old version it's still worth it for $15.

I'm interested in picking this up as i have a few long flights over the course of the next week or so.

What are monster hunter games like? I've never played one before and I'm intrigued. Is it kind of like jade cocoon was back in the day on the ps1?

Monster Hunter is like a continuous string of boss fights that you need to prepare for. No leveling per say but you are trying to get mats from certain monsters to improve weapons and armor.

A little hard to get into but once you're hooked you'll be spending hundreds of hours playing.

There's a reason the franchise is so dang popular overseas. :)

Just wanted to leave some impressions after a few hours:

- gameplay is freaking amazing. This is my first MH title and it's awesome.
- touch controls work incredibly well
- game is easy to understand, but features some really great and deep mechanics
- tutorial is quite long but it perfectly explains everything you need to know
- lock-on camera for big monsters is godsend
- graphics are quite nice, specially since this is a port of a PS2/PSP game
- big monster battles are mind blowing and feature some deep strategy
- no IAP whatsoever makes it even better. I'd rather pay $15 for a game than $1-4 a be forced to pay just so I don't have to go through cooldowns and similar shit that some "free" to play games force on you

If you have a supported iDevice (works on unsupported too, but you have to do some editing), buy this game NOW.

Also a little pro-tip: if you want something easy to view on your phone or whatnot while playing, Minegarde has a mobile-friendly resources section. View it here.

About two hours in and the controls are starting to get a little better for me. Still not physical gamepad effective (menus take time for me to collect quest rewards using touch versus just spamming through collection with a gamepad) and other little issues but surprisingly works well.

We'll see how well the controls hold up when I get far enough to battle a tigrex ;)

I'm at that point where I feel like I had a reasonable early level armor and wepaon set, I like to favor sword and shield but the katana can be rather good and it's not as slow as a great sword.

Not tried projectile weapons yet, not sure if they would be good for solo play.

Has anyone made a community thread for this title? I'd like to have one.

Quick question, in the online gathering hall - I'm beginning to suspect there is no way to change gear without disconnecting. Is this true? Coming from Tri and I find that a touch disappointing.

Otherwise, game is a great way to shorten the wait to MH4U.

Well in my experience with the PSP version it's true. I'm surprised they didn't change that as it seems like a huge oversight

Yeah, I guess it's alright with the way the iOS port works anyway. Switch away from the app for anything and its an instant disconnect.

Hey, see this hot air baloon:
Photo%20Jul%2005%2C%2010%2009%2024%20AM.png

I just found out you can wave at it and they'll locate the large monster on your map. Neato.

Also, the ability to screenshot monster hunter is the one feature I pined so hard for all through MH3U.

Careful though, a lot of MHFU monsters return in MH4U.

And yeah you can't change equips in the gathering hall, you also can't eat. :(

Ah, the memories of hundreds of hours spent and the bullshit that is Plesioth. I would consider getting this if I could somehow import my PSP save. Not really interested in grinding out my gear again.

first time getting into this game and after like 3 tries lol i finally get the monster hunter games

the training stages are so boring compared to what you actually do in the game even if it is the same just on another scale

really fantastic port, people who are hesitant on iOS gaming(like me) will be very very pleased with this port imo

I put 20 hours in so far and I must say the touch controls are pretty dang good. There was a learning curve for sure, but I was shocked at how natural it felt after a few hours.

Beat Khezu last night to unlock the Village three star quests. Pretty stoked. Most online players are either new to MH or are still adapting to the touch controls because yikes - bit of a mess right now. Gonna stick with solo for a while I think.

Also playing this again reminds me just how much better MH3U is in terms of polish and playability. This game is very rough around the edges, but I do like how difficult it is in comparison. Dual Tigrex gonna be a debacle. haha

The controls are pretty impressive. I was most curious about how more complex things like gunlance worked. Its kind of reminiscent of how the PS2 games used the right stick to attack.

I think the toughest part for me so far has been the lack of things that were added in Tri and later, like the gunlance shotgun blasts and the GS slap. Also, just found out that monsters do not get exhausted.

Quick aside: anyone know what dragging the run button to the left does? I'm guessing its only for certain weapons.

I really hope we can get more to play this game soon lol my bf and I own the game but I'm waiting for him to finish training so that we can move on

How does minimizing this game work? I know some iOS games don't enjoy it, but I know I'd never sit down with my phone to crank out some monster hunts so I need it to gracefully let me pop in and out of the game. Really on the fence for buying this.

I've lost progress on a couple of occasions. Not sure if it's because of the app refresh setting or what. Now I always save just to be safe.

The game eats the battery like crazy too.

The dreaded tutorial phase of MH games... every game makes you do it. For those who've been playing the series from the beginning, it's close to torture.

Anyway, surprised this is being received so well. When I heard "MHFU with touchscreen", I assumed the worst.

Watch out for the fish, is all I have to tell you guys. It's waiting for you...

There's a pause item in the menu that's available during the hunts. I was using that initially to kind of lock the action on my own terms, but switching away automatically pauses the game when you return. You tap to resume and it shows the scene minus the HUD so you can prepare yourself. Online it dumps you back to the offline hall.

I did lose my place when I updated to 7.1.2, but that's it. My bad there. I also had the game lock on save screen once, but restarted it with an up swipe and lost nothing.

I had a great time doing a quest online

little to no lag issues, went very well

I hope more people give this game a try I definitely avoided the series for a long time because of omission of online

So how does this work? We set a number between 1 and 999,999,999 and that's our way of finding each other? Should we have a GAF number/range?

Also, with the save files. I swear it said something about importing a file somewhere.

Well, no games were fun during the PS2-era because they only hand PS2-era assets back then so...wait...um...

Where would Mario be without Mario 64?
Where would Zelda be if OOT never happened?
Where would Metroid be without Prime?
Where would Metal Gear be without MGS?

OK, now what happened to Megaman?
What happened to Contra?
What happened to Star Fox?
...and all the rest of the once popular now dead/dormant franchises?

Innovate or die. Thats the rule in games. I don't criticize MH because I hate it. It's because I love it.

So you really want a paradigm shift in gameplay then? Because that doesn't have anything to do with platforms or graphics. Or do you just bitch and moan about platforms and graphics in every single Monster Hunter thread on this forum just because they don't make it on systems you want to play it on?

Is there touscreen keyboard integration for talking with other people?

There is a chat room implemented. It asks you each time you use it if you'd like to speed up chat. Then it suggests you download some third party app. Haven't spent much time with it yet, and I must say the interface does not convey itself well.

Please tell me more :)

That would be iFunbox. I believe its detailed in the one of the iOS OT threads.

Yeah that's right. I think the series deserves, and is WAY overdue for an open world environment (no more loading screen escapes), destructible terrain, and a weather system. PS2 era hardware literally cannot do this due to its processing limitations. MH also needs a big graphics upgrade if it expects to stay relevant. MH4 looks really, really dates. Go watch the latest Driveclub videos to see what modern games look like.

surprised this game has a 4.5/5 rating on the store. Sure i assume most buyers are monhun fans, but even then its a pretty high score for a pretty damn hardcore game on a 'casual platform'.

I'd have to assume the $15 price tag scares away any who only have a mild interest. haha So yeah, probably mostly MH fans. Doesn't hurt that the touch controls work pretty damn well. I gave it a 5/5. :)

If that's really how you feel, then why don't you make a thread of your own about what a hypothetical open world Monster Hunter could be like? Because the way it is, I don't think people appreciate you trying to shit up every single thread about the MH games that actually exist with your whining about what being modern or relevant means.

If your friend was taking illegal drugs, wouldn't you try to stop him? The franchise will die or be relegated to IOS on its current trajectory, just like so many great franchises before it. I'm not OK with that. It's not whining. It's condemning; strong censure with the goal of rehabilitation from a destructive path. Whining would be the drug addict telling the doctor that his prescription for rehabilitation is too harsh.

ahahaha sorry i don't really know much about mh or anything but i thought this was just adorable
