damn, so L-Cancel was sort of present in Brawl's Demo??? never knew that, actually it's my first time reading that thread, damn

now I will take to heart how people say that this game can differ a lot from the demo to the retail version
It sounded more like auto cancelled aerials that are in Brawl

So is Sakurai still having an iron fist in terms of making this game for casuals? Like I know he eliminated tripping but haven't heard anything about him making the game closer to SSBM in terms of technique instead of SSBB.

For the most part...yes. When compared to Brawl, the game is slightly faster and the characters are slightly "heavier", but not by much. As stated in the Nintendo Life article posted above, it feels far closer to Brawl.

Movement options were still quite limited in the Best Buy / E3 demo builds.

So just to be clear: He sometimes hears things, they are sometimes right, and what he has either heard or knows is awesome and is something that we MIGHT get at Evo?
I guess. When I've seen him hint at things before, it's usually ended up being community based stuff. I really have no clue what it could be/is. If it were characters, I don't see why anyone outside of Nintendo would know. Maybe Nintendo has another Smash event planned sometime.

I'd be so happy. ;-;

It's literally the only melee mechanic I miss.

I still don't get the point of L cancelling. It's an arbitrary button push. Why would you ever NOT want to speed up your lag? Ever? If there is no reason to NOT do something, don't mandate a pointless button push. Every other mechanic gives you choice (do i stay on the ground longer to avoid the follow up or get up quicker and try to move out of the way) that you could use for a tactical reason. There is absolutely no reason to ever want your move to lag you more so why would you force me to push a button every single time i use the move?

See link on the left up there? That's the L cancel version. That's dumb. You know how you fix it? Make it ALWAYS BE THE SPEED ON THE LEFT. ALWAYS. NO BUTTON PRESS REQUIRED. Problem solved.
I doubt it's anything related to the game or of a reveal nature.

It can't possibly be a NINTENDO announcement, can it? It has to be some EVO thing.

Yeah, I kind of agree. There's really no reason NOT to do it, so why have it be a thing you have to press a button for? It doesn't really make much sense.

I think the argument is that it adds a layer of skill. Timing L-cancels can require some tricky reactions due to varying hitlag from hitting/whiffing, electricity, shields, invincibility, etc.

But I agree with you. I think if anything they should lower the execution barrier that way. Would be inviting to more players, while still being fast for those of us that care.

Good games. My Zelda was so weak lol.
Haha, I appreciated it, though. Gave me a chance to win a few times.

It's frustrating, because I have little moments where I start comboing, stop overthinking things, and just "feel" the game; when that's going on, I feel like I'm doing well. But then usually within 15 seconds I go back to suiciding off the ledge or just walking into the opponents smash attacks. Guess it's just something you've got to keep playing towards and it'll work itself out.

Still had a lot of fun, though! Look forward to playing again some time; you gave me a lot of new match ups to learn. Every time I play a GAFer, I feel myself improving my game and getting back in the swing of things.

Artificial execution barriers are not the best way to add layers of skill.

Didn't care for L-Canceling. Remembering to constantly mash L on landing, which happens a kajillion times a match isn't skill.

It's a pointless layer of skill. Every other mechanic in the game requires for you to know when to use it, when not to use it, etc. Anything that is a 'use it always' is bad by design. Even 'use it most of the time' is better than 'use it always.'

Also... an insidious part of me wants smash wii u to be delayed to 2015 just so that 2015 is the definitive 'best year in gaming ever' for me. Zelda Wii U, Xenoblade Chronicles X, Codename Steam, Bloodbourne, Mario Maker, mighty no 9, Splatoon, Witcher 3, etc etc.

It'll be really hard to top having a console zelda and a smash bros all in one year.

Yeah, L-cancelling is something is one of the few things I'm glad as gone.
Is it in Project M? I only play it casually, so I don't know if it has it off the top of my head.

It sounds awful but part of me agrees, I wish the hype for this game could last a little while longer. Like, the Brawl hype is something I look back at more fondly than playing Brawl itself.

Smash games are so infrequent but the speculation and pre-release talk and daily updates are so much fun. And that moment when you realize "wow, it's going to be years before we see another E3 conference that has a Smash Bros. trailer in it" is just... it's hard, man.

Going to play this game pre-release at Best Buy was such a rare opportunity and it's already come and gone. There's no way of knowing if they'll do something similar for Smash 5, and if they do it'll be years from now.

I'm trying to take this all in and remember what it feels like because it'll be a long time before we get another opportunity to get excited over an upcoming Smash game :[

Ugh I hate it so much. It's like making you tap B twice to do a special move and tapping it once makes it take longer to execute or maybe it does nothing at all. So dumb so dumb so dumb. It's an extra thing to do for no reason at all other than if you don't do it your chance of losing goes up, always.

smash hype is almost always greater than smash itself for me. I'll be sad when it's gone. I guess i'll move on to zelda hype, but the trickle of info is nowhere near as constant :/

Yes but your character flashes white when you do it successfully so it's easier to tell when you've done it.

I'd probably be fine with L-canceling being gone if aerial attack landing lag was just cut in half across the board.

Why would I ever not want to tech off a wall? Techs should be automatic!

It's just to add an extra layer of necessary skill to make your character perform better. But really it just feels nice for me to do.

I'd be much happier having it back than just having laggy aerials all the time.

Auto L-cancels > Manual L-cancels > Everybody just being slow

It is still in PM. You get the flash when you successfully do it though.

I remember trying to find out why before on Smashboards, and pretty much all I was able to find was "stop talking about this". Fake Edit: Actually looking it up now, it's apparently still not up for discussion.

I played hacked Melee this past weekend, and in that version your character flashed red whenever you missed an L-cancel. I miss less than I thought, but still so much shame on display T.T

Look at bright side, if the rumor is real then y'all still have DLC characters speculation for awhile so Smash Hype would stay alive for awhile.

If teching is always better than not teching, then yes, it should be automatic. I don't know about wall techs, but there can be some strategic reasons to not tech of the ground, specifically playing mind games against your opponent. Not L cancelling, however, is never better than L cancelling. Making a move take longer because i didn't arbitrarily press another button at a specific time is dumb. It'd be like if he changed smash attacks to require you to tap B after releasing or it does less damage (but knockback remains the same). Dumb Dumb Dumb.

The question is.. What type of characters would be included in the DLC? :0

First thought that comes to mind is cut veterans. If Squirtle, Ivysaur, and Lucas are all gone I could see them all being brought back for their fans (unfortunately if Snake's not in the main game I certainly wouldn't expect him to be made DLC later on). After that I'd think of characters who became a big deal after the roster was already decided on in early 2012. Mewtwo becoming important to Pokemon again, Dixie being just as prominent as Diddy in Tropical Freeze, stuff like that. I think those two are the only obvious ones though.

If there are any beyond that (I doubt we'll get more than 4 or 5 tops) it'll probably just come down to fan demand or possibly marketing (y'know, stuff like having an Inkling around Splatoon's release date to promote interest for that game).

Ridley.

Nobody would be ready for that to finally happen.

I'm fine with any. As long as they add characters that they had to cut before it went gold.

Hmm. It all depends on who exactly for me. I'd want completely new characters, and characters that aren't represented.

no please no dlc characters. :( I'd hate that.

Yes! YES! I want DLC characters, i'd love it, even more variety and things to choose from. :3

no bro, mewtwo is already in the game. How are they going to add someone whos already in? I mean I guess I can see them adding more alt costumes to him but it would be silly to add another mewtwo when he's already there.

To be fair I think Mewtwo is the only non-veteran who wasn't mentioned by Gematsu that still has a fair chance. That "we're thinking about it" comment is just something too hard to forget about.

If he isn't in, wouldn't you be glad to see him as DLC?

Well I do not really subscribe to that notion whatsoever. When you compete against other people, being able to reliably do these things vs not being able to do them is a big deal. Someone who L-cancels perfectly without thinking is going to have an advantage over someone who doesn't. Someone with great tech-timing, same deal. I don't think these are areas where we need to totally flatten the playing field skillwise.

I feel like there's some elegance to having to tap a button in order to chain moves together. When you l-cancel repeatedly during a combo, you are saying "yes I am stringing this shit together," you are playing MUSIC. It's something you learn, and something your body starts doing. I like it.

It'd be like if he changed smash attacks to require you to tap B after releasing or it does less damage (but knockback remains the same).

And it's definitely nothing like that. L-canceling wasn't something added after the fact to make things that were once easy harder. It made slow things fast. It granted fluidity to those who worked for it. There was no subtraction, only addition.

Honestly I'm not super interested in vets as DLC.

At least not enough to spend money on them, anyway.

I play enough Smash to the point where I can't see myself not buying any DLC should they make it unless it's something completely arbitrary like more trophies or something. I'll probably get most of the Amiibos too.

I have issues. :[
