Sniper Elite 3 Digital Foundry Face-Off

You are ignoring it and mentioning anecdotal evidence in a thread with empirical evidence. And then you conclude you're enjoying it and so will other people.

These threads are to let people know which console version is the best for multiplatform games. If you can't deal with the very premise of the thread you should probably just enjoy games without getting into technical minutae.

So this thread contains nothing but empirical evidence, and I presented anecdotal evidence?

Ok. Lets try this again. Kudos that we have shown once again, that Sony has the "most powerful console" on the planet. Sniper Elite is definitely the objectively superior console version. It runs at 1080p and 60fps(mostly) and that makes it a superior experience on console.

Anyone who has the X1 and doesn't have a PS4 or a high end PC should should not bother with it then? They would be missing out on a fantastic game...

But this thread isn't about if the game is good or not or if people should buy it overall because it's a fantastic game. It's purely for technical informational purposes so that if you do decide to buy the game, you know exactly what you're getting on your platform of choice. Figuring out if XBO owners should even buy the game is up to each individual XBO owner after informing themselves on the pros and cons of their game port.

The fact is that you can eliminate the tearing via the vsync option. So if you're ok with locked 30fps, the XBO is just fine. If you're not ok with 30fps, expect screen tearing.

If a gamer hates 30fps and hates screen tearing, then yes, for that particular gamer, the XBO version is hard to recommend. For most everyone else though, that version is just fine. (Once you use the vsync option)

Typically, anecdotal evidence is not discussed in DF threads. DF threads aren't a review of the game, they are a technical examination of the game.

This is the IQ Wolfenstein should've had.

You said it, even after gluing my face on my 50 inch TV there were hardly any jaggies to witness.

I swear all of my games (except WD) are 1080p on PS4 and yet this one looks as if it is running on higher resolution... I hope future games have this kind of superb IQ.

Ahhh. Now I see where I am in error. I was just jumping into the pool of hyperbole...I am, in fact, OK with 30 fps for this type of game, but I do see the point here. I was just trying to point out that the game does indeed have many pros beyond the visual fidelity cons.

Does it have a better IQ than Infamous: SS? That game has the best IQ I've ever seen on consoles.

I know I am probably going to get tons of hate for this, but yes Sniper Elite looks to me even sharper and cleaner than SS.

NOTE: I dont say it has better graphics overall, not even close, I:SS beats it in almost every single category, whether it is poly count, textures, shaders, effects, lighting, detail etc its a much more "next gen" game no denying that.

But when it comes to IQ SS, although exceptional as well, it has some issues, since there is pop in (even if it is only mild) and the AA works perfectly most of the time but in some cases when light is cast on rails and metal surfaces in the distance you see jaggies.

In Sniper Elite everything looks crystal clear. And pop in is virtually non existent. Very impressed on this regard.

I got the game digitally on the X1 and it's really fun, but I'm regretting getting it on the X1. I'm usually not a person that complains about stuff like fps dips and screen tearing. But, it's atrocious on the Xbox One. The screen tearing is very jarring. It happens a lot during slow mo sniper shots, but it also happens when running around the levels. This game just confirms my commitment to getting all multiplats on the PS4 and not X1. Also anyone on the X1 version having trouble getting in a multiplayer game no matter what game mode?

I have the Xbox one version. Enabled v sync tearing gone. Runs lokcked 30fps apparently. Plays fine so its all good. They should have just made this the default.

PS4 also has a Vsync option.

By default it is set to off but even so the game has 0 screen tearing. If you turn Vsync on then it locks the framerate to 30.

But the drop in fps is so minimal in PS4 that people should leave it off. Besides, like I said, there is no screen tearing as opposed to XB1.

For XB1 owners turning vsync on is the way to go in order to get rid of the screen tearing, but be advised, framerate wont be a rock solid 30 fps there will be some dips here and there. Still its much better this way, than playing with that tearing.

Vsynch is off by default for Xbox One version? Why? Screen tearing is headache-inducing when it's as bad as this. Titanfall was the same damn way. Xbox One may be weaker, but there's no reason to let the image tear all over the place. A lot of devs need slapped.

but from what i understand you can turn it on yourself on xb1

Oh yeah, the bullet cam received a really nice upgrade from V2 in the form of Bokeh DOF.

This is likely going to be the standard outcome for games that try to reach resolution and framerate parity.

I'm 3/4 of the way through on X1.

After the first mission, I turned V-sync on and that seemed to fix a lot of the issues. This version wasn't at consistent framerate anyways, so having it locked or more consistent around 30 is better than the tearing and glitches in the animations for me.

As for quality, when you're playing it in isolation from other consoles (or the Gaf), it's pretty damn amazing...

I had to come here to find out that I wasn't playing something amazing and a total blast...

Same here, could've been my post. Noticed some tearing on the kill shots (while the camera goes around the bullet). Nothing too wild and nothing during the actual game, just while the bullet is flying. Turned on VSYNC, after that the tearing was gone. I'm at mission 7. Good game overall, i'm pleasantly surprised.

Being slapped is a bit harsh, but I absolutely agree that tearing is something that should NOT exist this gen, or really anymore period.

You won't get tons of hate, you're making a completely unbiased observation of two games you have seen for yourself. You're clearly not a troll or making this up, you have every right to voice your opinion. It makes me sad that people feel they have to explain themselves or add disclaimers when voicing opinions these days :(

I can't stand tearing. I forgot what PC game it was, but I starting playing it and it was tearing within the first few minutes. Vsync didn't work, forced vsync didn't work... so I uninstalled it.

Lower frame rate I can deal with. Loss of detail I can deal with. Even slow texture streaming I can deal with. Screen tearing though... that I just can not deal with.

Maybe it was a mistake reaching 1080p on XB1... seems like after D1 patch XB1 will be 30fps, good for the owners because 60fps is creating a lot of issues.

Playstation 4 version towers above XB again.

I was pretty happy with the visuals on PC. It's an okay upgrade over what we got in Sniper V2, but a lot of it seems to be from better visual direction in the levels. The tessellation is probably the nicest new addition (I'm pretty sure V2 had none).

That looks nice. Perhaps the higher next gen console ceiling helped PC a little.

Do we know what kind of AA is being used here? It's so clean it looks like it might be a combination of MSAA and post process.

Given that this game is all about picking out small targets at a distance and rarely actually engaging in direct firefights, I'd say that resolution should be a very high priority.

This dev didn't said the difference between consoles were small and XB1 can reach 1080p just fine?

dev said:
“[Microsoft] are releasing a new SDK that’s much faster and we will be comfortably running at 1080p on Xbox One. We were worried six months ago and we are not anymore, it’s got better and they are quite comparable machines.”

Found it.

I really think MS dictate that vsync should be off in all games. I seem to remember a lot of multiplat 360 games last gen where the PS3 counterpart simply took the FPS hit instead.

PC is the only platform with tessellation so I think that release would have been fine with or without an Xbone/PS4 release. They had a lot of the higher end features in V2 when they weren't last-gen possible.

so nothing new, PS4 version is a highier res and better frame rate.

People just need to accept the Xbox One is the PS3 of this gen, mulitplatform titles will be typically weaker.

Wolfenstein is fine on x1.

just because it does some super weird (yet effective) resolution scaling shenanigans.

Having now completed our analysis, it's clear that the PS4 gains an advantage with smaller drops in resolution that occur less frequently than they do on Xbox One. Metrics in the area of 1760x1080 are found on PS4, while on the Xbox One this can drop to an extreme of 960x1080 in some scenes.

it literally drops to half the horizontal resolution at times. Devs clearly favored fluidity over IQ here, though. Which is good.

The thing is, the Bone has no Cell, it has similar architecture to the PS4 and PC. This is a simple case of a dev promoting the 1080p buzzword. If they're have used 720/800p instead, the games would look identical, apart from resolution.

LOL. Mister X and his merry band are saying DF are lying and are covering up the real truth. Hilarious to read the shit that goes on over there.

Always been kinda blind to screen tearing playing a game myself before but the way they present it here, doesn't look so hot
http://a.pomf.se/chuxlz.gif

I think that might be even worse than the screen tearing on the PS3 version of AC2.

And here I thought people didn't like Digital Foundry anymore. I'm going to say what the Sony fan would say last gen when the 360 versions were better.

"I'll just get it for the PC". The PC version smashes the PS4 and X1 version away anyways.

lol.

Visually the game looks sort of "janky" to me in some places, while nice in others.

I wonder if the shadow issue will be patched on PC?

May pick it up cheap in a sale. I have yet to play this series and I hate I missed out on that Free Sniper 2 giveaway a while back :(

Is this game any good? The IQ on PS4 is insane.
Oh yes. It's fucking awesome. It's my ideal shooter: huge levels, optional side objectives, and good stealth.

This fake narrative is getting old. They say it looks like it needed more time for optimization, which it clearly did, as it runs shitty. They should have tweaked things down to get it running smoother.
The lazy devs narrative is getting old too.
