Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I was kind of bummed that Vinny moved back east, as I thought he gelled best with Jeff and Brad, and not really Alex. But it seems he can make a great video all by himself, so it's all good. :)

From the videos they've done so far Vinny & Alex is a pretty good combo, too. I guess the biggest problem is that all their videos are going to be Vinny & Alex with no mixing up. Unless they get the cool TV Guide lady to join them during a Castlevania stream.

I swear that popped into my head like two seconds before he said it, I would've died if it actually accepted that.

Lot of good content up this week. Vinny and Alex are a good combo and of course Vinny on his own is pure magic. Dan is fitting in rather nicely back on the west coast. Things are starting to feel lively again.

Sidenote: Finished the first season of Jojo's and... that last fight was like a fucking fever dream. I almost feel like I need to show it to someone else to confirm that it actually happened.

You know, it is a bit of a bummer such a hilarious video with Vinny is behind the sub wall. If there's one video this year they should remove it from, it's that one.

I think that video alone justifies the $35 I pay them every year. Definitely premiumest content.

I kinda dig Vox's style of journalism, it's really helpful for political and social topics I don't quite understand. I'm less sure how much I like it for a topic like video games, but I'm glad Patrick's experimenting with how Giant Bomb should do news. That's always been kinda a weak area for them.

I hate clickbait article titles though.

Not to derail thread completely, but Vox is just one of numerous examples of "explainer journalism" out there on the internet. What the internet needs is some actual reporting, and that's few and far between. If you want news explained to you there's way too much of that already out there, and if you want some actual reporting there's almost nothing substantial on the internet that isn't the internet arm of some "old media". Ezra Klein talked a big game about "changing internet media" and other BS when he pitched Vox, but it's just the same old shit he did at the Washington Post, and what The Economist has done in print since 1843.

Anyways, rewatched the Bot Colony video now, and holy shit that video is so great. I like that Vinny seemed unsure about the audio so he shouted for most of the stream, added to the insanity.

I need to go back and relisten, but did I hear dan say at the end of this weeks podcast that he has never put ketchup on a burger? How is that even possible?

I'm not going to judge what condiments people put on everyday foods. It's not until someone starts putting A1 on a well-done $50 cut of steak that my head's going to implode.

Seriously if I go to a nice steak place with you and you order your filet mignon or ribeye well-done, that's grounds for dissolution of our friendship.

If you want to put expired, leaky ketchup on your stupid boiled hot dogs, then party on, I guess.

I don't mean to badmouth other developers, but this kind of stuff is making voice recognition look bad. It needs to be local or it can't work in a reasonably consistent and snappy manner.
Is there an example of voice recognition in games that actually works? If there is, I don't think Giant Bomb has ever come across it.

,the7A+I5[]@

Seriously. What was that?

At least it made the entire preamble to the game worthwhile, just like the game itself made the ending worthwhile...

i fast forwarded through all the voice recognition calibration stuff as there was so much of it.

I'm also on my first run through the Persona 4 ER. I've been following the crew even in the Gamespot old days, but I never saw the appeal of the ER back then. So far this is excruciating to watch just because the game is soooooooooooooooo slow. I'll stick with it for a few more episodes as I'm only at Ep 7.

Get to about 15. Then make your decision.

I've tried to get into the Persona 4 ER several times over the years but I just can't do it... I get incredibly bored a couple of episodes in and I give up.

I've watched all the other ERs tho. Well only one side of Deadly Premonition but still.

Comments like this are why it needs to remain behind the pay wall. The idea behind the subscription is to create compelling content to justify paying them money. If you want to watch the video, then they've done their job.

Vinnyvania was also behind the paywall, as I recall.

John Davison is out of work again. By choice or not - dude never seems to stay anywhere more than a couple of years.

Dude really is a mercenary. Not in a pejorative sense, either.

I'd say he should start his own company, but didn't he already do that and still moved on after a couple years? Guess he must get bored really easily.

Funny how Brad was saying in the bombcast 2 days ago how often they scrapped quicklooks right after starting recording because they realized that it was a mobile game ported to steam and then 2 days later Vinny posts a mobile game quicklook.

To be clear I'm not complaining, I love content... Just find it funny.

Speaking of which, Brad needs to bring back his iPad and do a Civ Rev 2 quicklook.

even before the headline changes Patrick's articles have seemed kind of off for at least a few months, imo. experimenting is fine but it seems like too often it's come at the cost of general writing quality. I always feel like I'm reading a first draft.

the Vinny video was perfect. I love that they made him do like 30 minutes of voice training first.

I honestly didn't like that article yesterday about the XB1 dev kit story. "Here's a report on why we didn't report on the initial report and why people who did report it shouldn't have done that. Go us!"

I think that I feel like Patrick might be a little lost? He does great work with his weekly content, but that last video with narrative voice over felt...wrong for the site. He's mentioned before how his style of writing is going away in favor of video content. GB is, essentially, just that (we get maybe what, one new review every month or two? Not that I'm complaining...).

I think if he moved to NY to join GB East it would provide some great dynamics. Dunno how feasible that is for him but I do hope he can get back on track a bit without resorting to click bait-y headlines. :p

But like I said, his Scoops and the Wolf show and weekly "worth reading" segments are great and I hope he continues the good work.

Well, GBeast is really back to the old Sausalito spirit of throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. We've seen the streams. That place is held together by duct tape and wires.

GBWest is the established brand that can be more refined in what they choose to present and do.

Vinny really put himself through a frustrating experience for our entertainmet. I think we should thank him. Maybe we should all pitch in and buy him a robot that can actually complete simple tasks? If we all pitch in around $200,000 each we should be able to send it to the GBNY office. Any ideas on stickers to decorate the robot with?

Could use the extra cash to buy him some meds to help with his night terrors, with this in his house...

You can get it for $30K though. A bargain!

You guys are really talking up the Bot Colony. I turned it on for a bit when it was live and Vinny kept shouting his name over and over again and it was so annoying and loud, I had to turn it off. Does it start getting funny somewhere later?

It's funny largely because the game is completely broken, and wouldn't be fun even if it weren't.

someone in the comments for the video called it a "viewer endurance run" and that's pretty accurate. Not funny so much as a marvel that this man we love has abused his psyche for our "entertainment?"

The repetitious and unreliable nature of voice controls along with Vinny's mounting frustration are part of what makes it such a great video. You, as a viewer, can only experience absurd hilarity of Bot Colony if you're there for the entire ride.

Quick example: "End," 'And,' "End," 'And.'
Quick example2: The rabbit hole of the voice calibration segment, along with the final calibration.
Quick example3: Philips.
Alone, they mean nothing. In the context of the video, they are utterly hilarious!

You have to see it!

People mentioned that a cause of the wonky voice recognition stuff was Vinny choosing cancel during the training but that doesn't exactly explain why Jimmy called him Phillips (specially because is the default name).

Wasn't that a) after Vinny restarted b) after he wanted to confuse Jimmy with "my name is what is my name"? I think it's probably explicable somehow, lol.
