Giant Bomb #8 | It's a Hit!

I went to check out Gamespot since I've got nothing better to do, and there's a combined 19 people chatting+lurking in their live "Now Playing" show right now? Am I seeing this right?

I don't understand why CBSi haven't at least tried to put some of the GS live shows in the GB chat when GB isn't streaming anything. It would make perfect sense from a business perspective, and I can't see how it would be much backlash against it among GB fans.

Danny has said in the past the GS Live shows get a small amount of viewers compared to GB- although I believe it is usually in the 100s (next to GB 1000s)

This is very small though - but could be explained by the game they are playing and the personalities playing (with all due respect they are not the top people on GS)

It makes sense for events like E3, but for regular shows GB would have to worry about viewer fatigue. If fans get live alerts or see the homepage notification, no matter how good the GS show is, they'll be disappointed it's not a GB show. Keep that up long enough and viewers start ignoring actual GB live shows.

Basically, it becomes The Boy Who Cried (Scoops and the) Wolf.

Yeah. I guess that makes sense. Stop making sense!

I remember his quip about the E3 drive Mixlr stream having more listeners on its lowest point (after they got back from a 40 minute break) than The Lobby :P

The problem is that Dan isn't behaving like a layman, at least in the Divinity: Original Sin QL. Throughout the entire thing, he's just been quiet and (presumably) disinterested in the entire affair. I'd reckon he's been silent 95% of the time, throughout the entire ~90 minutes. There were times I forgot he was even there.

If this is how he's going to be during QLs of games he has no interest in, then why have him sit in on those games at all? He's not asking questions, he's remaining silent or making little quips, sometimes right after Rorie or Brad himself did or said the same thing. His presence, at least in the Divinity video, has added absolutely nothing. It was like having someone in the chat be physically present, complete with an astronomical chat cooldown.

Maybe he just felt out of his depth or something, looking at a game so foreign to his interests, but if that's the case he should try to at least relate to it or ask questions about it - anything other than abject silence.

I guess it could just be a warming-up period for the quick look method. Hopefully he improves in the future.

It was a bit weird cause Rorie obviously did notice that and tried to rope him in a little with some questions.

edit: Their twitch has 83 viewers, that's brutal. When Jeff farts around in a car, he gets ten times that.

When Jeff farts around in a car, we get highlight clips

I dunno, I think "console exclusive" is a dumb term. I understand why they say it, but I still think its dumb.

I don't think its dumb, it serves its purpose well. MS and Sony don't see the PC as a competitor, so a game that is just on the Xbox or PS is exclusive for their intents and purposes. However, they can't just say that a game is "exclusive" because that is technically incorrect and it sends a confusing message to industry savvy folks (like GAF, Patrick, ect)... so someone coined "console exclusive" to satisfy that dilemma.

You're describing typical "new job" behavior. The guy has barely been with GB for two weeks. Cut the guy a break. If we're still having the conversation *months* from now, sound the alarm, and so on.

Really? That's sad cause the lobby is pretty good

Yeah, it was during the E3 drive stream. They came back from a break and mentioned they only had a thousand listeners. Danny, in the back seat with a defeated voice, said that's still more than The Lobby gets.

It sounds bad but they have to keep expectations in check, you can't condition a casual audience to start visiting at specific times overnight. Especially as Gamespot's younger viewers weren't around during the glory days of On The Spot.
Also doesn't help that Danny has to carry the show on his back.

This is the best podcast episode of all time: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8FxRXlaqfY

I'm expecting that link to lead to The Ricker.

GS gets more hits on their news and articles, but no one really watches their shows. GS (the whole company!) did a 24 hour marathon thing the same time that Alexis and Drew did theirs (or maybe it was another one) and only got like a tenth of the donations that the GB guys got. I just don't think they have the same sense of community engagement.

It's weird because GS got rid of subscriptions completely, so I assume all of their money comes from ad revenue now? It's like everything that GB isn't... and I'm not really sure which is more sustainable. We know that GB needed to be bought by CBS to continue and that the subscriber model wasn't cutting it completely... but we also know that slapping ads on a webpage is doomed to fail as well. So the future is youtube? lol

PewDiePie and Smosh are the future.

Dan does sound like someone who is finding his way to fit in with the crew. He's moving fast, but it's still a process. Six months from now we will look back at these and laugh.

Speaking of which, I recently listened to Dave Lang's first appearance on Giant Bomb. Ryan actually referred to him as David. It was so weird hearing him before he was the Lang we all know and love now.

I could be completely off the mark here, but i would assume that a lot of GS's daily visitors are people googling a game or reviews for a game, and then being directed to GS as it's one of the top results. The regulars GS does have are likely not there for the video content. I think we'd see a similar situation if Jeff were to release how many hits the articles on GB get compared to the videos. I imagine the article views on GB would pale in comparison to GS, and vice versa for video content.

To be fair the future of youtube is also slapping ads on a webpage.

I would say something funny but at this point this seems so plausible that I'm scared and saddened.

Also yay, Jeff read my question. I'm on the internet mom.

Yeah, PewDiePie getting exclusive first previews of games is really demoralizing. Kinda hard to argue that it isn't a smart move when those videos have many millions of views.

That's Giancarlo "new guy" Varanini :)

Welp. I guess that says a lot.

I mean....can you imagine some random people on the internet just suddenly deciding to buy one of the GameSpot people a fridge and actually spend 400+ on it? People watch and donate for GiantBomb stuff cause they like the people behind it. That's why it's funny that Yoshi is named after Jeff Gerstman, cause "we" know he "hates" Yoshi.

GameSpot never really had that, they are trying to do that now but it's a bit too late (I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they imported Danny for this exact reason). You can see this developement all over the industry. Gametrailers used to be a pretty sterile place where you didn't even knew who reviewed the game and they've become much more personality focused over the last few years.

You joke, but it's true.
Vinny's Colony Bot stream is a glimpse into the future of GB. :p

Yeah, that's what I was bringing up. It's a completely different type of audience that goes to one and the other, which is why they complement each other well. But it just seems like neither model is long for the world in terms of being sustainable. Heck, I have to imagine Fox got rid of IGN for a reason.

To be fair the future of youtube is also slapping ads on a webpage.
That's true. Ideally there's some way to hit critical mass like Louie CK and his 5 dollar specials, but it feels like GiantBomb is basically supported by their corporate masters and the several thousand subscribers they get. The next step for them has to be running video ads on their streams I guess?

He's popular, reaches an audience that doesn't go to any game site (probably), and will probably not shit on the game too much. Makes perfect sense.

I don't know any of the Gamespot personalities besides the ones that guest on Giant Bomb.
I know Kevin, Tom (gigglepoo here, I think?), Chris, and Carolyn... but the podcast has sort of died or became a semi-regular thing, and I haven't really felt any desire to watch their video content so I'm already starting to forget the site.

Kevin van Ord seems alright. He likes Strider. That's all I know.
That's Giancarlo! lol

I think they were doing okay in the post-Gerstmann-gate days when they were still trying to keep things going. Even after Ryan, Brad, and Vinny left. But then they stopped their live video show for a while and also kill the podcast for a while and all the engaged viewers went elsewhere.

The GB/GS Wednesday new release show should have been like The Lobby, where it would have been a good showcase for the GS staff for the GB audience and also allow GB to at least feature more games on their end of the site... but it was so slapped together that it wasn't a surprise that it bombed about as hard as that Farmville gimmick.

I guess maybe it is too late now. I mean, they basically have a live stream every day and are scheduled like a television network... but does anyone here watch their stuff?

I mean....GiantBomb always felt like a perfect mix between Youtube (very personality driven and focus on video content) and "professional journalism" to me. They combine the best parts of Youtube with some credibility, production values and most importantly without the bain of my existance, the "skits".

No
"Jeff: This is my pet rat Bowser and lol we have some wacky adventures, don't we Bowser?
Still Jeff but with a high pitched voice: *squeek* yes we doho Jeff
Jeff: Oh no, is this? It is! My arch nemesis Rap Man! Grrr RapMan what evil plans do you have today? I foiled your scheme in my lenghty 30 minutes video last week, and now you are back?
Jeff in a stupid fucking costume: Hahahaha yes here I am again in a new costume! Take this: Adobe lightning effects!
Oh no
*to be continued*"
as of yet, thank god.
Urgh.

Hah, not everyone is skit-based on Youtube thankfully.

Not to the regularity of the quick look format, though I agree that the facecam stuff have more lineage with SA's LP.

Ah, sorry. My mind instantly jumped to "traditional" LPs when you mentioned YT, haha. Thinking about it, you're completely correct. All the big channels basically do QLs of new releases now, yeah. That mixed with popular stuff like Minecraft or DayZ or LoL or whatever (which you can all play for eternity) and facecams basically form the recipe. Which I've never followed, ever - with the exception of GB.

I'm still wondering if I was such an avid LP fan (around '03 or whenever they started) because it was genuinely entertaining and not as depraved as today, or if it was just the novelty of it, or my age, or what.

Guys, the "your mixlr gets more views than The Lobby" was an exaggeration. He's obviously not happy about the numbers, but I can't believe some are taking it literally. It has a couple of thousand views on Youtube alone, not counting the reuploads of single parts of the show.
And I strongly doubt youtube is where most people watch it, especially since they upload it later.

I, for one, welcome our new Brad & the Dota overlord coverage future. Better than what Patrick has been doing recently. I have no idea the voice he is trying to create on the site. Spelunky won me over but thats about it. I thought Dynasty Warriors/Lets try something new or encyclopedia bombasticas would do work for him.

Thousands of people listen to jeff drive tho

He's talking about the live broadcast compared to the mixlr e3 stream. It wasn't an exaggeration.

Though to be fair Jeff's mixlr is unreasonably popular.

Unreasonable I say.
So Jeff does have something in common with anime!

He was talkimg about people who watch the live show, not the archive. And the Moxlr stream had 1k listeners at that point (it peaked at about 6k), and there's no doubt that The Lobby gets less than 1k viewers live each week.

Jeff is probably the only reason mixlr is still a thing.

Well... you're not wrong:
