DRIVECLUB The Drenched Forests of Canada

This happens, people point out that that is incorrect...

...then this happens on the same damn page!

I see nothing that would warrant this hype for this game on these videos graphics vise, instead the more times I watch them the more problems I discover in the graphics. At some places the mountain is a simple flat surface, there are no roadside objects apart from the trees, and some traffic signs here and there. The water effects look good, but that's not new technology just an old one used well. Or should I look at the fog effect? We had that in '96 on a Voodoo1. The car models don't look better than in GT5.

I was interested in this game a few months ago, but as release draws closer I get put off by more and more things. Especially the lack of physics. It is devolving steadily since the first teaser videos, if the trend keeps up we'll get a criterion nightmare.

Yeah man. I'm looking at the thread title, number of replies and gifs and i'm waiting for the punch line. Are the expectations of ps4 so low that some rain makes everyone go crazy? I haven't seen much on ps4 to make me run out and get one. It's the only system since ps1 that i haven't got day one.

And i don't have an xbox one either. Was never planning to get one. Did everyone forget that Bizarre Creations made PGR 100yrs ago with the best weather effects ever?

/s right?

Will it be anything like the first one? How was that structured? Were the races in strict "this is where you can drive" confines with lots of open world links?

Only comparison I can think of, at the moment, is Fuel. Burnout had lots of freedom of direction but was essentially a grid system without offroading.

I also wonder if this engine could be turned to open world, if the claims about how much of the world is being rendered at one time are true.
Horizon 2 is open world. Horizon 1 was open road.

this still has cockpit view in right?

Yeah, would love to see the cockpit view with the rain pouring down. GT5 had some nice rain effects on the windshield, notice how the raindrops are affected by the cars movement, however there was a lot of screen tearing on the wipers and the effects were very low res.

Nah, it's because people remember the nice weather effects from PGR and a lot of former devs from Bizarre creations are making this game.
And to see the new weather effects finally, no matter how small, is kind of nice. We have never seen them before.

I like the foggy nature of the clips which create a pretty realistic reproduction of that kind of weather. Looks good, hope the game is great. It doesn't matter if it's on a PS4. If it would look like this on any platform, people would like it.

Edit: I don't like the comparison videos either. Kind of pointless from a multitude of reasons i.e time of day, type of game, etc.

this is looking pretty damn stunning. they've nailed that overcast lighting. and the rain looks amazing, great details like the streaking droplets and the wet tire trails left behind on the road. it's looking more and more likely i'm going to buy this.

Oh man, I am a bit disappointed in this thread. Too much focus on graphics, too many judgements and a weird focus on the technical side of two unreleased games. I know you better, GAF.

Personally, I am very much looking forward to my free Plus-Version of Driveclub. I played it at both E3 2013 and 2014 and am happy, how it came along. The graphics, in action, did not woo me terribly. But the game is fun. Simple as that. I am most concerned about track design and overall variety and scope. It is really hard for me to judge, how long this came could be interesting for me. But overall, very positive. Great game for PS4.

Horizon on the other hand did not impress me that much at E3, but that is mostly due to quite a bland, shallow presentation. Graphically it looked nice. Really nice. Different artstyle. More colours, not so much realistic, but fun. The offroad-part was terrible, but I plan to ignore it anyways. I like the diivatar-ideas there and think, it could really enhance the Horizin-Formula. And even if it is nothing more than "More Horizon", I am a happy man. Great game for XBO.

And then The Crew. Graphically kind of hideaus, but HUGE and fun. It reminds me of Driver. SF. Simple, fun car-action. Nothing too serious. But fun. Also really looking forward to the game.

Oh and I noticed some detailpops while playing Driveclub. The patches of flowers at some tracks popped up very close the the vehicle. Take that or leave it

No one should downplaying what Evo has achieved with the visuals, in the same way no one should downplay what Playground accomplished with Forza Horizon on 360's hardware. They're both great studios but even taking into account the open world nature of FH2, there is a bigger difference in visuals than would have been expected, let's just hope the gameplay matches in the same way Forza Horizon did.

Oscar's goal is the open world fact.
Open world racers have never been something that appeals to me for pure racing, with tracks you can improve your times and know what to expect just like real racing tracks.

Having said that, I do believe burnout paradise did open world racing right, what made it appealing though was not the pure racing but the number of activities, milestones and events you could have done in paradise city.

given 99% of us havn't played these games, what are we suposed to judge when they release a short clip that looks absolutely gorgeous visually? i can't judge the handling, i can't judge the features, or track variety, or car selection, or tuning options...thread about visuals has talk about visuals...it's kinda how things work.

Nope, the only games that did open world right imo was the midnight club series and nfs most wanted. I don't usually enjoy open world racing games but those two were well done.

FH2 looks completely awfull, and its not only the comparison, it does look horrid. Bland textures, incredibly bad vegetation, awfull popin, and the list goes on. Being open world or not, is no excuse, when it looks far worse than GTAV for example (and its not even on the same category).

What exactly do you expect when this thread is about two clips Evolution have shown of the weather for the first time?

And then you go on a run-down of your impressions, graphically, of all the upcoming racing games anyway. I mean really.

Horizon 2 is open world. Horizon 1 was open road.

So are the races entirely structureless? You could do a 180 and drive the other way if you desire? Or do they give some semblance of structure by designing shepherding points and "circuits" around the bits where you can drive anywhere?

Saying they are open world means nothing to me. I've never played the first. Burnout was open, Fuel was open, both drastically different.

Now one thing I have seen others mention (elsewhere, not on here) is that the AI looks a touch railroad-y, bland. Have there been any updates as to how Driveclub handles AI?

I think a better comparison would be Need for Speed Rivals, which is also open world and features cross country racing patches, short cuts, massive jumps and all the rest, and is entirely comparable graphically to Forza Horzion 2. Which in itself is somewhat surprising given the former is a cross platform launch title, whilst the latter is an exclusive coming out a year later. Anyway, that's for the comparison mega thread I guess.

I disagree that Rvials is at all comparable to Horizon 2. If anything, Rivals has more in common with Horizon 1. It's more structured with it's road layout and only offers a few short-cuts, not all that different from how Horizon 1 handled open road racing.

Anyway, this comparison gif fun is starting to get out of hand...

WOW. Forza looks like Ridge Racer in that comparison.

Im trying to understand this gif.
Is it saying Forza is superior because you can drive through corn fields and do Need for Speed shortcuts?

Awful? Bro you can't be serious FH2 for an open world game looks great. Going from F5 it is going to be a nice visual treat.

That comparison vid up top does make it look like Cruisin USA though.

I suppose that is somewhat true, though there are (by the looks of things) plenty of sections in FH2 that also seem to be closed off and more point to point.

P.S, my response to that GIF from the other thread. With a few tweaks I think Playground could improve the visual feedback several fold. Not sure how much leeway they have in terms of hardware resources and optimisations mind. I know the things I'm requesting below might be quite taxing.

Definitely drives home FH2's open world physics angle, which does offer a great degree of freedom and options. How that translates to improving races remains to be seen. There's still the possibility that too much freedom could negatively impact things too, what with some taking crazy shortcuts whilst others might not know them, or just want to stick with the tracks.

On a side note, Driveclub's physics actually look great in that GIF, at least with respect to visual feedback anyway. Conversely I think Playground need to tweak the suspension feedback when off road racing, and maybe improve some of the effects. Eg instead of weird looking random sequential poofs of dust, have it more volumetric. Building up, moving and swaying down the field (and not traveling through the car as it does now). Also have far more grass and dirt throwing up around the car. And when you smash through wooden barriers, instead of a few planks flying through the air, have it splinter in to hundreds of shards of wood, and have less emphasis on that same dust cloud.

Aww, man. Now I want a new Cruzin' USA.

Also, I die a little inside every time I see that Horizon Lambo no-clipping through all those bushes at full speed. The devs should not have released that footage.

Having a slice of pepperoni pizza and root beer while playing Cruzin USA at Pizza Barn was THE BEST.

Anyway, this comparison gif fun is starting to get out of hand...

And this gif again perfectly illustrates why those two games shouldn't be compared.

Besides being games that features cars that are racing, their focus and corresponding tools to achieve such focus are drastically different.

If anyone wants to draw comparisons, Forza Horizon 2 can only be compared with The Crew.

In the same time DriveClub *could* currently only be compared to pCARS due to its closed circuit nature, but it is not a fair comparison since pCARS is going for 60fps, more complex driving model and more cars on track and it will never look that good.

However, I order of fuel the stupid, unnecessary and deeply tiresome console-wars, both can be compared to hell and back, however, their focus is vastly different.

Like comparison between COD and Arma for instance.
