3ds. Should I?!

No. It is an old, childish, and gimmicky system with under powered hardware and a cheap design. I have one, and the screen actually hurts my eyes due to how low res it is. If you actually walk around with it, you will look like an idiot, and there isn't much worth playing on it other than Nintendo games, which are both easy and highly repetitive. All of the networking features were designed for Japan and don't work well anywhere else unless you happen to know a large amount of people with 3DSes.

Just buy games on a smartphone, if you have one. They are cheaper, and playing games on a smartphone in public does not make you look like a loser. The Vita has better hardware, but has very few games worth playing, is too expensive, and has been practically abandoned by Sony. And of course, like the 3DS, it is embarrassing to play in public.

Basically, it isn't worth it.

Gonna write this off as a joke post

Definitely worth it! My favorites are OOT, link between worlds and monster hunter 3 ultimate!

I have the xl BTW, the regular 3ds seems so small.

I bought a DS around 2005 and shortly sold it because the games weren't for me. Recently I bought a 3DS XL (silver Luigi) and only now appreciating what a remarkable system the DS/3DS was and is.

If you get the 3DS and you are in the US, I love my slim case I got from Best Buy. Perfect.

I have one of the limited edition Zelda 3DS XLs that I no longer want OP. If you or any other Gaffer is interested PM me.

I hope I can post that in this thread :D I don't want to get robbed by Gamestop.

Sarcasm??? Or Neogaf Shit post of the year?

Wow, that's a lot cheaper than I thought they'd be. Anyone had any experiences with Nintendo's refurbs?

Been using my Nintendo xl refurb for 2 weeks and it's perfect. Looked totally new! Keep in mind I'm in Canada - system shipped from NOA in BC, Canada. Not sure if they are different in quality from US Nintendo.

I'm normally an Xbox guy (I know, I know, put away your pitchforks), but I picked up the Mario and Luigi edition XL for $180 and Pokemon Y, Yoshi's New Island, Rayman, and Scribblenauts and I'm having a great time with it. All of that is really just waiting for Smash Bros, though. So I would say if you have 250-300 to spend on it there are definitely worse things to buy.

A 3DS is the best possible console you can get this generation. I personally prefer the XL model but own all 3. It has a lot of amazing games and also access to the DS library. If you like games and can afford the device there is literally no reason not to own a 3DS.

My personal favorite retail titles: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, Kid Icarus: Uprising, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Shin Megami Tensei IV, Etrian Odyssey IV, . As far as digital is concerned, Pushmo, Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies, and Crimson Shroud are great. There are a lot of awesome games I did not mention as well.

It's not coming until next year but definitely grab Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. If 3 Ultimate on the Wii U was any indication this will have a large and active group of players.

You definitely couldn't have picked a better time to get one. I got mine when it was a year old and still lacking games. Bravely Default hands down is my favorite thing to come from the 3DS, cannot wait for the second game.

If games like Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing, Kid Icarus and Pokemon don't appeal to you then stop playing games lol Super Smash Bros is coming eventually along with Fantasy Life, and of course a new Bravely Default and Monster Hunter game.

There's also tons of eshop games like Inazuma Eleven (playing it for the first time and loving it), Mutant Mudds, Pushmo, etc.

kinda off-topic...
I'm kinda interested on Tomodachi Life, but I haven't made a proper research because it looks like a crazy and unique game that I want to experience myself...

just a quick question:
does the game works with "real time" like Animal Crossing?. I kinda hate the fact to be doing "chores" at certain times of the day, or being punished for not playing enough. I'm 30 years old and I don't exactly have all the time in the world to play.

thanks and sorry for the little derailment.

Honestly Tomodachi Life might have you hooked at first, but once you make or import enough Miis the game opens up and you start to realize there's not really a whole lot to it. It's never a demanding game, but it's definitely interesting at first. I'll occasionally load it up just to see the news, but other than that you're really just feeding your miis, introducing them to someone, or giving them stupid stuff.

3DS folks: how easy is it to upgrade your SD card in terms of transferring game saves, digital games, etc?
As long as you have a computer you can connect your SD cards to, super easy. Just take your current SD card, copy and paste everything on it to a temp folder on your PC, connect the new SD card to your PC, cut and paste everything to it, put it into your 3DS and your good.

This is beautiful. Should be forever quoted. I like it better than the "I'm an expert" post.

Remember teens and adults: playing games in public on a handheld is more embarrassing than actually posting on the Internet about games.

I'm been an avid portable gamer for years, and have never felt weird about it. I have had dozens of people express interest in the system/game I was playing and even met a girlfriend by playing castlevania on my SP back in the day. :)

You mean people don't treat you like an idiot when playing a handheld game in public? Surely all those people have been taking you more seriously when you are playing mobile games. Don't tell me those people I was trying to impress actually don't care which platform I was doing my mobile gaming on?!?!

I bought my XL last December thinking I would play some Pokemon X/Y to bond with my son. I had never owned a nintendo handheld before. And then I gave FE:A a try and my 3ds adoration began. Just this past year I've put hundreds of hours into Pokemon Y, Bravely Default, FE:A, Etrian Odyssey 4, Zelda: OoT, SMT4, and Ghost Recon.

I have longer fingers and the form factor of the XL works pretty well for me. While I don't play it much when I'm out and about, I always have it handy when I'm at home. It's a great mobile console. I'm loving the library of turn based tactical rpgs on the system. So good.

No.
At least, not if you're anything like me.
I haven't played anything on it since I finished and sold the newest Zelda game.
I don't even know if it has enough charge to turn on.
Also, I find the 3DS XL hardware to be sub-par in just about every aspect.

Usually, if you're making this kind of thread, you're already thinking of doing it and just want someone to enable you... so I'm guessing you're going to go with yes.

If you do, I hope you enjoy it, OP.

I'm not sure what you're going on about, but I've never asked random people what they think of me when I'm playing something. Well, maybe I would if I was trying to impress someone, I guess.

I thought the sarcasm was so obvious, but I guess not. It was based on the post you quoted before from the junior who bases his video game console decisions on what people in public think of him while playing them.

The bolded has always irked me.

Why would holding or using a Nintendo handheld in public make anyone look like a idiot? If anything I've had people come up to me and start conversations on what I'm playing. Hell I still get a few friend codes for pokemon. Them friend safaris are still kicking.

On topic:

OP go for a 3DSXL much better on the hands and pick up Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate or wait for 4U, either way get some portable hunting action.

3DS is a fantastic system if you actually try to get into the library and not just let it sit there, like most people do with their handhelds.

Pretty much every game in my library I can HIGHLY recommend so, I'll here is my list:
(you can't go wrong with the 3DS library unless you buy those crappy budget games)

Ridge Racer 3D
Mario Kart 7
Fire Emblem Awakening
Kid Icarus Uprising
Kirby Triple Deluxe
Yoshi's New Island (I know it's not as good as previous games, but I still like it)
Star Fox 64 3D
Pokemon X
Luigi's Mansion 2
Super Mario 3D Land
Pilotwings Resort

I had Steel Diver, Dead or Alive Dimensions and Resident Evil Revelaitons.

-Steel Diver was a fun little thing, but didn't have much substance and not worth more than $10 imo.

-DoA was a brilliant fighting game, but I got DoA 5 on console and saw no reason to keep it. If you want an on the go fighter you can't get any better.

-RE Revelations is an awesome RE game, better than 5 and 6. But I re-bought on console for the improvements.

Wow. Both handhelds have deep libraries if you actually look. Not only would anybody look an idiot playing any handheld while walking (watch were you goddamn walk!) You don't need to buy a handheld to play them in public. You buy them to experience the game library wherever you want. Smartphone gaming is more convenient to whip out before an appointment, on the train, or during lunch, but doesn't compare at all in actual game play quality and experience.
Also since when have Nintendo games been easy? I would say most of the shooters on the market are way easier than most Nintendo games.

It was obvious, thouggh since you quoted me it made it seem to me like you were questioning my post, so I guess that messed up my sarcasm detector :P.

Anyway, supposing that guy is serious about what he says, I figured my response to you might spark something in his head.

From the current models XL is the best option. The bigger screen is worth it and the extra batery life is nice.

As for if it's worth it........... I don't know.

Last year was amazing. I think I quite honestly spent more time playing on my 3DS during 2013 than on my Ps3/PC. Between some games I had to catch up with (as I got mine in early 2013) like Kid Icarus and Ocarina of time plus all the awesome releases like Fire Emblem, Monster Hunter, SMTIV, Pokemon, Luigis Mansion, Link between world, etc it was just a fantastic year

But this year.... I'm not feeling it. I finished Bravely Default (which I really liked) during february but havent turned it on since. Other than that I haven't been interested in any release this year and personally I not excited about any upcomming release either. I guess smash looks cool but I'd rather wait for the WiiU version, and personally remakes of pokemon games don't really hype me (X/Y was different, being the first one for 3DS and first one in 3D)

I was actually thinking about selling it some time ago but decided to wait and see if 2015 is any better. Code name S.T.E.A.M looks quite fun and if nintendo goes and announces a metroid and a new zelda (or Majora's Mask remake) or something next year could shape up to be great.
Or mabye Nintendo will decide to make Virtual Console a good think, give SNES, GBA, N64 and DS support to the system and discover the wonders of cross-buy with WiiU...who knows

I guess, you should try other new game which just released i guess?

Tomodachi? Rune Factory 4? or upcoming Thearhythm. If u ask me, Etrian series 100%.^_^

Man, I'm glad I saw this thread. I've been debating finally taking the plunge on an 3DSXL as well, but then became torn between that and a Vita. The idea of being able to play old PS1 games is pretty tempting.

But now I just saw an article on IGN where Sony pretty much flat out admits that it has no clue what it's doing and doesn't know if AAA titles will ever come back for Vita, and I'm leaning heavily towards 3DS. Plus, if that's Sony's attitude, I can probably grab a vita in 3 months for less than $200.

I bought a XL past week, after selling my OG 3DS a few months ago. I really missed having a 3DS during these months, so IMO it is totally worth buying one.

Can't wait for Smash and MonHun 4
XL + Fire Emblem: Awakening
Recommending bad games to people is kind of a mean thing to do.
No, that's not a reason at all. So disappointing.
It may not be as good as Nocturne, but it still a great game and better than some Atlus' other games (like Persona 4).

It's worth it. Personally I prefer the 3DS to the XL. For me it's definitely more pocketable and the 3D range feels less touchy.

Ocarina of Time 3D is the game that sold it for me.

3DS is set to have a killer latter half of the year as well with Smash, Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire, and Phoenix Wright 123 all launching, among other releases.

Still waiting to hear on Majora's Mask 3D, DQVII, and whatever Monolith Soft is working on.

Of all the consoles out at the moment, I can't recommend the 3DS enough.
It has been out long enough that you have the ability to buy the XL and a library of games that will keep you going for months.
I bought a XL zelda edition two months ago and I've already accumulated over 13 games and the're still counting.
I haven't bought an ios game since I bought my 3DS or next gen console. Thank goodness for my 3DS and PS4, Xbone and wiiu because they've made me realise that the only reason I was into gaming on my ipad and iphone is becuase the last-gen had run on for far to long.

I have had the original 3DS and two 3DS XL's. I've gone back and forth between each model and prefer the XL the most. The XL's screen is welcoming after the original's smaller screen. The buttons are much better and feel more resilient. I like the clickiness of the XL buttons.
I think the rounded corner designs of the XL look much better compared to the original's sharp corners. The sharp corners of the original always jammed into my palms and made it uncomfortable after a long play session.
Personally, I find the XL a much better improvement over the original. But you should definitely try a store with some demo equipment (I don't know of any from the top of my head), and get a feeling between which suits you best.

The 3DS has a great library currently, and though it doesn't seem like much for the rest of the year, still some quality games coming out.
Since you want Zelda OoT, I recommend A Link Between Worlds.
•Fire Emblem: Awakening (a fantastic strategic role playing game, should be mandatory for you to buy!)
•Animal Crossing: New Leaf (if you're into sim-like games and want something you can play for a little bit everyday. Lots to do in this game!)
•Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (my favorite game on the 3DS, it's a rhythm game featuring music from the final fantasy series)
•Super Mario 3D Land (great platformer that utilizes the 3D)
•Virtue's Last Reward (is a visual novel, it's the sequel to 999. It's a great series and if you're into visual novels, check these two out)
•Kid Icarus: Uprising (all sorts of awesome)
•Mario Golf: World Tour (I am addicted to this game, it's great to play in short bursts)
•Pokemon X (great intro for the pokemon series onto the 3DS system, lacks a bit in extensive content, but still worth a play for sure!)
•Mario Kart 7 (fun, fun, fun!)
•Professor Layton series (one of my favorite series. Plenty of puzzles and I love the story line)
•Ace Attorney series (this is just a great series)

There is so much more, but I figured I have written enough!
