Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 9: F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5

This thread is a hollow corpse of hype right now.
Long ago, the world was nothing more than an endless sea cloaked in a boundless sky, reaching as far as could possibly be imagined.
Then two great titans came into existence: The Hypeonus and the Game Mechanis.
The titans were locked in a timeless battle.
Until at last… Only their lifeless corpses remained.

The problem is that with all the spectrum that 64, melee and brawl covers, smash 4 isn't going to be it's own thing unless it introduced new mechanics to the basic formula, stuff like air dashing or EX specials or whatever that changes the basic flow of smash gameplay.

The biggest thing that's going to set smash 4 apart from the other games and what's really going to make it interesting and give it some more depth is the customisable specials, so if you want it to really be it's own thing, I'd pray that the custom moves are implemented well and aren't just some random add-on hidden in some sub menu that's not very accessible.

That's something else I'm hoping for too actually. Custom specials are really interesting and I hope they can be implemented in characters and not break the game too badly. It's probably one of my most hype things about this entry.

Also I mean this entry being more its own thing by saying based on the Demo during Smashfest it's kinda got more of a ground based play style. It'd be interesting compared to Melee's fast-paced aerial based metagame and Brawl's slightly campy, defensive edge-hogging metagame. I'm really looking forward to the game and hope that few quirks from the demo get improved.

Is anyone even expecting Nintendo to have any type of announcement at EVO at this point?

We still don't know what announcement is happening before Melee (unless I'm mistaken), and Nintendo is there, so they definitely could.

They've moved the announcement blocks around. It's now one after Melee and one after Marvel (with a Tekken related announcement being guaranteed).

I personally don't find the idea of a ground based play style interesting for smash, I'm alright with ground based characters, but the thought of most characters being tied to the ground in a platform fighter, especially one with the freedom of movement smash has, seems like you're not really making the most of the what the game excels at, if you get me.

Honestly, I'd rather have 64 2.0 with a few of the more modern mechanics like air dodging and a little speedier and the customisable moves, I absolutely love the increased hit stun in64, some of the combos are so great to watch, just with the improved DI and air dodging it becomes a bit more skillful to pull them off.

Come now. It's still listed as Holiday 2014. amiibo and Smash are the lynchpins for the Wii U lineup this holiday. It's not getting delayed. To do so would be suicide.

Oh sorry, that's what I meant. And Harada's is the one after Marvel right? So there's a free announcement block.

I hope they change a few things from the demo as well, because at least then there would be some sense of actually listening to what people are saying if it fixes some of our issues with the game.

But we all know how rare it is for a game to change for the better between demo and release.

...you do know they always change the demo to final build for Smash, right?

I'd actually like to see throw techs/throw cancels be implemented as a mechanic, press the opposite throw direction within 6 frames of the guy that grabbed you pressed the input and you cancel the throw and put yourself at a frame advantage.

Anything is good in my book that gives someone an advantage for a hard read, and there's a lot more variables in a smash throw than in say an MK9 throw, considering there are more directions and they don't even happen automatically either.

Yeah but if they do what they did with Brawl that doesn't exactly give me hope.

Why on earth would they do that?

Because certain things (like momentum conservation) would be fantastic for the feel of game but they'd require more effort than increasing the dash dancing window or reducing aerial lag, so I'm saying that that isn't going to happen.

I don't think they'll be tied to the ground per se, I'm just noticing that characters with stronger ground game will be better suited to win matches in this game based on previous games. I can see more Bowser and Pit action in competitive play due to their buffs on the ground as well as having solid air game..thus far.

Yeah! That would be the sweet spot for overall speed not that you mention it.

Dammit, now I want this lol.

Anyone here play as Peach? I'm kind of interested in learning her. Any tips?

Are we talking Melee or Brawl or Project M here?

Actually speaking of peach could she even do the insta-floats in Brawl? I didn't play her much in that game - E: Yep, she could apparently, forgot about it somehow.

I donno, I could see something smaller today. An American release date for the Wii U version, followed by international dates in the trailer tomorrow, or maybe a veteran revealed today and then featuring them in tomorrow's trailer. Still kind of doubt it, though. Gonna be tuning in regardless because Melee top 8 will be hype.

Oh Jonathan Holmes.

"
One part that some people found particularly insulting was inspired by this interview with Mew2King and Aramada, two of the best Smash Bros players in the world. When asked if there was anything they'd change about Smash Bros 4, Armada stated that "...landing lag was a bit longer than in previous Smash games, so after you land an aerial you can’t move as fast afterwards. An improvement could be to reduce some of the lag to make the characters move faster, which also would mean that you could use a lot more aerials while playing."

Mew2King agreed, stating "I completely agree - the landing lag is definitely the number one thing. Kirby in this game seems pretty good with the landing lag - there’s some lag, but it’s not very significant. I think if more characters went a similar route to how Kirby plays, like with his down air or back air, the game’s tension would be increased. I would also add directional influence, which is where you can control which way you get hit by using the control stick. But if there’s one thing that matters above all, it’s definitely the landing lag."

They may be right. We'll lave to wait and see before we find out how bad the landing lag is for the majority of characters, and how much it bothers the majority of players. Still, doesn't the fact that these two amazing players are put off by a slight delay in how long it takes to get back into the action after landing make them sound... a little obsessive? Obsessed with being in control of their characters, impatient during even a split second before they can move again, and always hungry for more tension?

I don't know how anyone who doesn't have the tendency towards being an obsessive, adrenaline-loving, "impatient control freak" could ever become an expert at Melee.

This is an interesting conclusion to draw from some level headed quotes about possible improvements to a game in development.

Ugh. Destructoid is my main video game news site, but I find Jonathan Holmes really annoying. He's entitled to his opinion, of course, but...haha, I guess his opinion just always annoys me!

No announcement from Nintendo at EVO guys. Its all about Tekken 7 tonight.

oh nintendo

they really don't see the appeal of a big reveal in front of thousands of screaming fans anymore, huh.

all about that "pre-recorded video of japanese man alone in a white room calmly speaking" reveal nowadays

Yep. Always baby steps with things like this with Ninty it seems.

I still see it as a win because Nintendo officially sponsered their 13 year old game whose competitive scene is as strong as ever. I'll take that much.

Well, he's a mascot for their site. That would make sense since people kept telling us that Mascot isn't real, and that we can't trust mascots.

What's weird is that I could have sworn there was Harada tweet saying the announcement wasn't directly related with Tekken like Tekken 7 or TxSF (which is probably canceled at this point.)

Yes, I am desperately holding out for a surprise Pokken Announcement.
