Hey Gaffers,

anyone else intentionally not playing the beta? ( unless there is a bonus that we get in the retail from playing the beta?)

I played the alpha and realized I like the game- it has so much potential and I think playing the beta will kind of take away from that new game feeling. Am I the only one that is self inflicting this torment?
I can't avoid it. I need it in my veins.

Can we agree post-apocalyptic game make the best open worlds to explore? Just something about the wanting to know what happened. The eeriness in abandoned building, cars, homes. Just gets me excited.

Bungie did a pretty great job of explaining it. If people actually bothered to look for the info instead of being spoonfed, they wouldn't have been confused.

aww, this is adorable - now we have video game information elitists!

surprise, some of us are adults with full time jobs and can't go hunting for information on every game being developed lmao

anyway, it sounded boring as shit until i gave it a shot in the Alpha and the pvp was actually really fun. so i'm all in.

There aren't a lot of post-apocalyptic sci-fi games, so I can agree with that one.

I was going to skip it but this a good chance to test out the classes. I spent the entire 4 day Alpha as a Hunter so I plan on spending the 17th-21st as a Warlock and the 23rd-26th as a Titan. This way I can make a decision on what class to main.

This is stupid, since playing the beta will give you bonuses and helps Bungie gather enough data and feedback to improve the final game.

I agree. Wandering around the wasteland in Fallout was so memorable for me, my imagination ran wild with thoughts about what it was before the collapse and the things then went down after. It was the same with TLOU and reading notes hearing about stories of people who were there a long time ago. I can't wait todive into the lore of Destiny and learn about the things that happened and about the people in the past. I'm sure there are lots of stories of former legends from the past.

nah fantasy, sci-fi, alien ,and post-apocalyptic worlds are all equal to me unless the lore is boring

It's not stupid if your goal is to play the more final, polished game and have all your progress be permanent.

Besides, I've played enough betas to know that the game will STILL launch buggy and the servers will be jammed pack with disconnects, queues, rubberbanding, etc...

It's just the way things go.

Expect the forums to be filled up with complaints and demand for refunds when the game finally does launch for retail.

Happens ALL THE TIME for these online games.

See at the start I was like why aren't Bungie doing Halo, they're so good at it, I remember the FIrst Viddoc and they just talked about the engine and we saw the wind turbines and an open field and I was like interesting, I then proceeded to read everything that came out, I was a little worried as the message was not always clear, then E3 2014 came around and it was still very Vague, but then the glorious Alpha came around and from then on I can say that I am hooked and want more and more.

There is something truly special about a Bungie game, they always provide for all, for the campaigners, the explorers and the competitive types, the only bunch that'll feel a tad left out is the forgers as I don't think IIRC there isn't a forge like sandbox to play with, not yet anyway.

But by lord they've really done it again with Destiny, and I can see the next ten years being great, scary to think by the time this ends I will be 36-37..... *gulp*

We had a .gif parade early this morning, and then boobs were mentioned.

LOL not to mention I think we had the first person banned in the thread.

His Views were completely ridiculous and worthy of said ban though,

RIP Unskilphil

Also the gifs were great, although made work viewing awkward today!

thanks for all of them dude, btw added you on PSN!

I wonder if the 16th, for the competition winners means that some of us commoners with the pre download will get a taste.... I certainly hope so...

PS I will be playing the beta on both Xbox and PS4 I will however not be exploring or doing as little of the story as possible, I want the fresh September version all shiny and new and without the first four chapters spoilered.

BTW has anyone else got launch week off work?

Any world with rich lore and goodies to find is fun to explore. Old Russia may have some history to it, but in the alpha there wasn't much to find. I would love to see a bunch of dead bodies, unlockables, data pads and audio logs scattered about. None of the caves should be empty.

Could also go for more of the Ghost explaining why a building collapsed or what happened to the population. Gimme some of that sci-fi novel feeling between public events.

i do love a good post-apoc setting, but i really didn't like Fallout's art style... something about Destiny's mix of sci fi AND fantasy really does it for me, though.

But by lord they've really done it again with Destiny, and I can see the next ten years being great, scary to think by the time this ends I will be 36-37..... *gulp*

They've definitely done it again, this is coming from someone who really enjoyed the Halo series.

By the time this ends I'll be... holy shit. Nearly 40. o_O

How old were you when World of Warcraft came out?

I agree with all of this. The caves were particularly annoying. But I understand why they are there.

Guys let not talk about age.. ._. I'm only 21 and I already feel old.

When you're in charge of marketing you can't expect your potential customers to adapt to your style of communication. What if they won't look for the info? You've just lost a sale. /r/DestinyTheGame and NeoGAF aren't the rest of the world.

Sorry, but I don't agree with your sentiment when it comes to their marketing. Activision/Bungie have given a wealth of knowledge, readily available for those who seek it. If consumers are confused on the product, it's no ones fault but their own. A quick 2 minute Google search does wonders, yet people still complain about the lack of information. There are plenty of Youtubers who cover anything and everything Destiny, yet somehow they're still completely clueless. Like I said in my previous comment, people expect to be spoonfed every bit of info instead of doing proper research. Although it's the job of those who know better to educate ones who are lost, you can only hold their hand for so long. The Marketing train is just kicking into high gear, so if people are still confused before launch, it's their own fault.

Destiny didn't really feel post-apocalyptic to me during the E3 Alpha. It just felt standard Sci-Fi with current-reality references. (Earth, Moon, etc...) In fact, it seemed borderline campy to me.

My one concern with this game is that the poor voice-overs dialogue and/or script might ruin the experience.

Hopefully they fixed this since the Alpha Version.

The whole "wizard from the moon" stuff was really bad. It was like B-movie level.

Can somebody explain the thread title to me? I know about the whole "That wizard came from the moon" thing from the alpha (I'm so excited for this beta, btw), but from my eyes it just seems like a bunch of random words put together without any cleverness or anything. So I'm assuming I'm missing some reference.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered a bunch but can you make private matches in Destiny Crucible?

Short of playing with bots, private matches have been the best way for me to learn the intricacies of multiplayer maps.

You can't change other people, whether you like it or not. You have to deal with it. Saying 'our product didn't sell because our customers were stupid' didn't exactly work for the Wii U.

It's adorable how people like yourself can't find 2 minutes out of your "busy" schedule to make a quick Google search before making unjustified claims about a game. If I can do it, you sure as hell can too.

Easy there buddy, I agree that the games lore was fully there.

What people didn't really see/get was how it would fundamentally work, like the mix of a shooter and PVP and PVE experiences from a studio like bungie who really had no experience in making such a dramatically open world.

I get what you're saying and what they're saying. I do believe that before I actually played it I was hyped as it was a bungie game and trusted them, but I was damn torn when a lot of the previews came back very luke warm.

Stop taking shots at the WiiU Mario Kart, Zelda and Smash Brothers will cause sales to be ridiculous, sure it's not a Wii hit, but it's a sleeper of a console which will come good.

( I don't own one yet, waiting for smash brothers bundle!)

Yeah, it really is a moot point. If people miss out because they're not making any effort to be informed, you can blame them all day while being less commercially successful.

Although all these may be moot points because we're still 8 weeks from release. Things are going to gear up. I think FWC's complaints are more about the enthusiasts complaining than the general populace.

I agree, but claiming there's no info out there is unfounded.
Hey, you mentioned earlier that some gifs were from a play session you were in. If you don't mind being asked/answering (and aren't contractually forbidden from sharing), how did that happen? Did you play it at a press event or something (and are you press)?

There's definitely plenty of information out there on Destiny. Bungie laid out all the keypoints in several articles last year and the 2013 GDC panel further explained their vision. They also released several ViDocs.

And yet, major showings still treat the audiences as if they know nothing about the game (or at least they should treat them this way). The information may indeed be out there, but not everybody can or will follow all of it or look into all of it, especially if what they see doesn't clearly demonstrate the product and grab their attention. Destiny's major recent trailers before E3 2014 were very context-specific. Beyond shooting aliens and flashy explosions, they didn't directly hit the key points of what the game was and what it meant for players. This is important because trailers are more widely spread than articles, and the average consumer is not going to watch an hour long panel with people they don't know talking about a game they're not particularly interested in. The 1-10 minute presentation is what Bungie needs to be focusing on.

Almost all of that was rectified with the E3 Gameplay Experience Trailer, but they chose to release this version after the show ended...

Man if I wasn't in DestinyGAF I'd consider making a clan where everybody had to dress up as goth/emo. I'd call the clan something like Guardians of the Damned.

Actually this is how I imagine Warlock players to look like:

Make a micro clan and join the faction Dead Orbit. They seem emo.

They're such conformists posers. They don't know what true darkness is. Under the traveler there's a great spot.

Actually this is how I imagine Warlock players to look like:

Man I feel like all of my fedora tipping and m'lady jokes may have damned us warlocks to be looked upon negatively.

LIGHTNING BOLT!

gimme a day and I will mock this up as some grindcore using garage band....

Edit anyone wanna do drums for me?

people were confused about Destiny? maybe Bungie should have just flat out said "This is our take on Borderlands", since it was painfully obvious since the original reveal, despite their dancing around it.

I don't see it as Borderlands clone. In fact, I'd say it's better than Borderlands.

For some people, any game that has similarity in any way possible (Either graphical style or gameplay mechanics) is a negative for them.

Goddamn, you guys and the last few pages... o.O

Really? Female Guardians are going out into the unknown. No self-respecting women would wear armor that shows off cleavage like that – it doesn't make any goddamn sense. Women aren't object to be looked at, so there's no reason to design the armor like that.

It's stupid. That's probably why Bungie got rid of it.
You're right - would you really find a female SPACE EXPLORER with exposed skin?! I know designers like to take some liberties when it comes to armour/costume design but come on!

Dafuq is going on here? Is this all benny's fault?
Yes it is. We've also determined that the Traveller is Yivo.

You guys know what this means right? We've officially become Halogaf already. I can see it now. Before you know it we're going to be complaining about bloom and talking about how shitty some ability in the game is.
I was going to say I was glad that I wasn't around for that shit, but if it's going to happen here too then I'm in no better position am I...

Welp, time to lock it up.
Jeez, a Beta |OT| thread that gets locked before the Beta even drops. New record for Dax :)

Good morning! Wow, this thread has gone to shit.
You said it.

To be honest, this thread has been full of shit for the last three days. It was created too early.
Where the fuck were you in the last 1-2 days when there were so many phat .gifs and wallpapers dropped?!

I dunno. On the one hand it would seem like a natural evolution of the game structure, but on the other, I'm not sure what value that would add to the game. If ships are used simply to get from point A to point B, piloting them would not be very enjoyable. And after Reach's combat mission I'm not sure I'd want to see it added; it was a huge development resource drain for what felt like a mini-game in the context of the campaign. I think Bungie would need to add a major space exploration component where they to enable controlling the ships, but that's out of the scope of Destiny.
Well we could be attacking ships in space or space stations, it'd be natural that either of those things will have some form of defences, so I think that we should see space combat eventually before we make it to our spacefaring destination.

At least let me do barrel rolls during the loading screens. Those loading screens in the Alpha were hilariously long.

The Hunter armor actually doesn't look all that bad on different colors. Yellow make him look like a Hornet.
Yeah I'd love to at least be able move my ship around the load screen.

What if there is no Destiny 2? What if they go the MMO route and just release expansion after expansion?!

kcPO1rt.gif
Because it's in the contract between Activision and Bungie. We already know the way the games are going to progress.

----------

And it was after this point I said fuck it and went straight to the last page. Fuck y'all :)

A densely populated region would be far more interesting to me. I'm waiting for the day google completely scans cities so I can explore them in VR without the fear of committing public indecency
