So there's a rule on who can and cannot touch the actual trophy? What the fuck FIFA?

1. The World Cup trophy weighs 6.2 kg (13.6 lb) and is made of 5 kg (11 lb) of 18 carat gold... hell the winner only gets a replica. The estimated value is over $10 million: World Cup trophy worth over US $10 million
2. It's a one of a kind work of art created by an Italian sculptor.
3. It's the most prestigious, coveted, and recognizable trophy in the world, over 200 countries compete for it every four years.

And of course the original World Cup trophy, the Jules Rimet, was stolen in 1983 and never recovered (and that was just gold plated sterling silver)... and that was after it had been stolen once already in 1966, and after Hitler tried to get it during WW2, so maybe they're trying to be a little more vigilant with the 11lb gold one...

It's not some cheap tin pot that Canadians and a few Northern/Eastern Europoeans care about like the Stanley Cup that some people here are comparing it to... that is just ridiculous.

Nobody is actually in any "trouble" here and despite the guidelines FIFA likely don't give much of a damn.

The OPs title is just his own bullshit editorialising.

If it's a replica, then what's the big fucking deal?

It's not a replica, it's the real thing. The country that wins gets to keep a replica:

FIFA's regulations now state that the trophy, unlike its predecessor, cannot be won outright: the winners of the tournament receive a Bronze replica which is gold plated rather than solid gold.

I've seen a lot of "lol stupid rule", but no actual arguments behind the statements. Can someone who is of that opinion counter this:

It's the most prestigious trophy in the world which, due to the Cup only happening every 4 years, is won by a tiny number of players. Out of respect to all the football legends who will never get to lift it, it shouldn't be passed around between celebrities and WAGs.

Also, I'm fairly sure it's more tradition than rule.

You guys don't seem to get it. Some of the best players that ever lived worked their entire lives to get a chance to hold the trophy but never did. How is it fair to them that some common celebrity gets to do what they never could?

Oh ... So they "borrow" the real thing for whatever length of time?
Yup, for only the couple days between winning it and returning home. Then it goes back to a locked, secure location for another 4 years. I believe it's valued in the 8-figure range and there have been multiple attempts to steal it.

The trophy the German term arrive home with today is the replica and it looks slightly different.

Also, I'm fairly sure it's more tradition than rule.

Yeah, it's an etiquette thing rather than any FIFA by-law IIRC. The German team will probably just receive an official letter of complaint.

Not really sure what people think is so ridiculous, there are plenty of clubs/organisations/guilds all over the world with etiquette rules too. I don't think it's an outrageous request by FIFA or unreasonable to anyone.

Then why does some common head of state get to do what those legendary players never could? What did Angela Merkel do to deserve it? How is that fair?

Because the World Cup is an event between nations, and the heads of state are meant to be the elected official of those nations. Merkel represents the German 'people' holding it.

Wait so champions can touch it?
What if some footballer gave it to his son to hold for example?
Is that a nono?

Also why do heads if state get to touch it?

That's silly outdated nonsense.

It's one of those things you either respect or don't - there's no real logical/practical reason for it, so there's no point me trying to convince you otherwise.

Personally, given the opportunity to hold it, I wouldn't. Over the years I've watched far too many amazing athletes, who had dedicated their lives to this, in tears as the opportunity was snatched away from them.

International pop icon and award winning musical sensation, the fierce bitch presently known as Rihanna, has gone too far this time.

Are you disappointed in the German players for allowing this kind of disrespect to be shown to the trophy?

Probably because they are representatives of the country that won the cup, so it's theirs to, in a way. Or maybe so that they can be allowed to give it to the winning team in the ceremony.

Btw about the replica thing, wasn't Brazil allowed to keep the real thing after they won their 5th star ? I thought they made a new one to replace it...

This isn't Rihanna's fault/problem, but Germany should be officially reprimanded for it.
Thank you for these posts.

No, Brazil got to keep it after the 3rd win in the 1970.

It was stolen over a decade after that when Fifa had already used the new (current) trophy in 74 and 78.

Someone as talentless as Rihanna should not be allowed to touch something that others had to actually work for.
