The air-quotes over "female" are unnecessary. There's very little that's ambiguous about Vivian's gender identity.

Syrup's not that impossible; she was in a Wii game.

I would consider Dark Samus genderless.

Dark Samus is referred to as a she in the scans, probably because she has some of Samus' DNA.

It's a little more complicated than that. In the Japanese version, Vivian is described as "one of the Shadow Trio, Vivian appears to be a girl but is really a boy," and Goombella says, "that's Vivian. Of the Shadow Trio, she's the youngest sister... er, brother." But then, at the end, apparently Beldam and Marilyn start identifying her as female. The English version eliminates all the back-and-forth and just says she's female throughout.

Lore too complex.

Not just her sisters, but Goombella starts referring to her with female pronouns too. It's an incredibly subtle thing, and it really irks me that they censored that aspect of her character in the english version.

Of course. I'm just saying that in the English version, there's nothing to suggest such a backstory, so to me, she's mentally and physically female.

You're buying into the censored version of the narrative then. Do you usually do that?

It's the officially localized English version of the game. Yes, to me that trumps the original.

And I seem to recall the Japanese often treat this topic as kind of a joke, so is the "uncensored" version even something to champion from a progressive standpoint?

I assume because the first game was only on the disk system and all 8-bitty. The second game got a rerelease on the Super Nintendo and looks (and sounds) really nice and is the one that got translated. It's also a prequel, so you don't really miss anything story-wise. As far as I know, no one's translated the first game yet... but you can kind of experience it by watching an episode of Gamecenter CX where the Kacho plays through it.

I'm liking Robin a lot so far! So when Robin is using the bronze sword, I'm guessing those attacks will be weaker than the Levin sword.
