so people "asked" for a 30fps mode...

Oh, that's interesting.

Faith in humanity restored!

This game was highly optimized for the cell processor if the ps3 porting it to the ps4 was not a walk in the park.

The 30 FPS option might convert people to 60 FPS if they switch back and forth p,

Not sure, usually you just replace the hardware-close functions with higher level functions from the new API (which should do the job that had to be done by "coding to the metal" before just nicely).

I didn't say that. They had to write a new engine, but stuff like increasing texture or shadow map size should be a matter of hours.

Don't know if they mean better LOD algorithm or higher quality LODs, the first would be nice and maybe takes some days, the second maybe is a shitload of work for the 3D departement.

Draw distance comes for free, if they are not stupid, don't know what it cost NOT to implement streaming or to remove the code.

Higher res particle effects? That's hopfully nice, but probably takes not more than fiddling with a few parameters.

It seems like your idea of game development looks a lot like a lo-fi sci-fi control panel, with people twisting knobs from PS3 to PS4 settings.

totally serious post.

I think from a historical/scientific perspective, for a remaster, it's kinda cool that they included the 30FPS option as a way to see how the game performed originally.

kind of like the different modes in Halo Anniversary (obviously not the same or as extreme though).

all of the bitching and moaning about frame rates is so lame... it's an amazing game made by one of the best devs in the whole world. Just play it and enjoy the visual upgrade.

If the framerate ends up droping often im sure ND can improve performance with some patches? For example ZOE 2 HD was horrendous before the patch

W00t! Finally unbanned. :)
It sure has been entertaining reading all the TLOU threads over the past two weeks.
Anyway, as for the topic at hand. If it were Tomb Raider levels of performance I'd personally find that very playable.. But I have to admit I'd be a little disappointed if this game doesn't hold 60 a vast majority of the time.

If the game can't maintain 60 FPS the 30 FPS setting will be a godsend.

Out of interest, at what point would you choose to lick it at 30fps? Would you be ok with the odd dip into the mid-low 50's?

Genuine question, not calling you out or anything (nothing to call you out on). Just curious as to what point people would choose the 30fps lock.

Have you entered an HFR film thread lately? It's completely insane to try to kid yourself that the dissonance between the two doesn't exist
Yes i have. To sow extent i can understand why people prefer a lower fps in movies. But when it comes to games... no exceptions.

Yes, I'm hoping if it's stable 60fps, that by doing this people who dismiss the significance of 60fps will see the significant difference finally.

We need Raptor in here to talk about shoving the game in his ass again. That actually managed to calm the last thread down quite a bit.

This goddamn place

Yeah, fuck options and choices, especially ones that don't affect me whatsoever!

I know people that hate open-world games because they don't like the idea of not being shuffled directly into the next story mission. Some people are a little indecisive.

Of course, some of them are just dicks too.

I see it's going to be a battle for the top spot of most posts in the OT between Japonicus and Dave Foster.

My money is on Japonicus. He's like the new More Badass.

Raptor said he's staying out of these threads now to avoid spoilers.

Were doomed.

Alright, I may have to log off until later on when the night shift comes in. Those guys are generally brilliant. Too bad I'm usually working and have to be satisfied with simple lurking.

Ewww, that rhymed.

You know what all the people bitching and moaning about frame rate in this thread are going to do?

They're going to buy the game anyway.

There. I said what we all know is true.

Or they dont care for the motion, cast it aside, and go back to 30 ;)

Fair enough, but that was really meant for those who refuse to consider the idea that smoother animation makes the game better visually, and write off the 60fps thing as some sort of OCD tech-nerd fetish without experiencing it assuming it's going to ruin the "cinematic" quality.

I'm familar with bother framerates. Some stuff works treat at 60, maybe TLoU will. Like I said though, I Robt think ill play UC3 at 60 if ever given the chance.

I know you didn't ask me, but since you're curious, I assume more opinions would be interesting to you as well.

Personally, there's not really a number where I draw the line, it has more to do with stability. I wouldn't mind it dropping as far as 30fps during bloater bombs, for example, and I don't mind some dips here and there to 50~55, but if it's constantly fluctuating between 40~60, I'd rather lock it at 30.

I guess it has more to do with frame time than framerate itself. If the frame time is all over the place, you should probably lock it.

Lol @ "purists who want the PS3 experience". That's like a blu-ray of Alien coming with an mpg of 300 lines of VCR tape quality video goodness for the Alien purists who want to recreate the feeling of watching it on VHS in the 80s.
