First impressions of The Last of Us: Remastered (Game Informer)

Lol @ "purists who want the PS3 experience". That's like a blu-ray of Alien coming with an mpg of 300 lines of VCR tape quality video goodness for the Alien purists who want to recreate the feeling of watching it on VHS in the 80s.
There is a difference between watching Alien in 1080p versus watching Alien in 1080P at 240hrz.

Seriously the goofiest thing I've heard in a while.

Funny that you mention that, but a lot of older movies (Aliens included) suffered from the "peek behind the curtain" problem due to clarity of HD transfer making props look far more fake than they looked on DVD.

F**K this 30 fps request. It is completely insane to even want that.
Get over yourself. I don't know how many times it needs repeating, but the 30FPS and grungy motion blur made a certain look to TLOU that a lot of people thought went hand in hand with the presentation of the dilapidated world in the game.

LastNac, you did not just compare native high framerates to motion interpolation, did you? I know you and I have discussed that fallacy before.

Not everybody feels comfortable with 60fps action scenes.

I'm really happy they give a choice for both framerate.
There is that too. People underestimate how much more nauseous 60FPS makes some people when they look fast moving camera scenes. This is especially true for someone looking at the screen while you're playing the game.

How does this option effect you?
Because never settle for less. 30fps is less and therefore you shouldn't want it! Always be pushing to get the greatest of the great for a game. 60fps is that and 30fps is not and it's not acceptable to include an option for a framerate that shouldn't exist in this generation.

Am I kidding? Who knows.

so sad that people are hoping that it doesn't reach 60fps so they can tell people they told them so....

who cares, game runs perfect at 30 fps anyway and does not hinder the single or multiplayer.

at the end of the day it is not FPS or 3rd person action game.

I'm sure ND just don't want to set a precedence in case they have to release a 30 FPS game this generation, which might be quite possible.

They want to keep 30 FPS on people's mind when it comes to their games. I bet Uncharted 4 will offer the same option.

Not really. Developers should be forcing the objectively superior 60fps on gamers until they accept it as a standard. Don't pander to luddites.
Again, condescending. Tell that to people who want to puke after 10 minutes of watching me play some FPS in 60FPS.

Didn't stop Ground Zeroes from being awesome in 60fps.

Man some of you...

Believe it or not 60fps actually feels 'off' to some people. They now have the option to adjust to 30fps if they don't like it; stop losing your shit and being so pretentious.

How does this option effect you?

Because its unnecessary, and only further propagates the misconception that there might be something better about 30fps. This kind of sillyness is why it took forever to get people to understand and embrace widescreen movies instead of the "standard edition".

How does it feel "off"? That doesn't make any sense to me how someone can dislike a superior format for playing games.

We've had plenty of discussions on GAF about people who'd prefer a 30 lock if there are any drops from 60 ever, so, hey, yeah. In the case of TLoU I can legitimately see how the cinematics could look awkward at 60. They have something of a ... gritty feel to them sometimes that felt proper for the experience. That said of course I haven't seen the remaster but that anyone could possibly complain about the option is hilarious.

I think in this case of this *Remaster* the argument can be made that the option legitimizes technically handicapping what is intended to be an improved experience and further legitimizes the acceptance of games with poorer performance. So I can see why people might not want it in. If it was a brand new game, they might not feel that way as much. I also disagree that running at 60 will negate the grittiness at all. It will make the animation smoother, which will highlight the fantastic animation in this game. So it could very well make it feel more "visceral'.

Best case scenario, it's for people who don't care about framerate.

Btw, watch this getting GOTY awards... (That's be stupid, IMO.)

There is nothing wrong with this getting GOTY awards if said person did not play the PS3 version in 2013.

Now, if they did play it, then yes, it's stupid.

i'm trying to think of more condecending insults to people who don't see the importance of 60FPS like I do.

how do you guys feel about "slow"?

It making sense to you is irrelevant of the perception and enjoyment of the medium to others. Hell, even one of the ND devs stated that they preferred the game at 30fps.

Did they? I know a few said they were skeptical of TLoU at 60 but were converted once they played it.

Man, only on GAF do you see folks going nuts over other people having a choice to play the game how they want it.

The 30 fps lock is very strange indeed. I hope that doesn't mean the frame-rate is unstable.
Unless there is some kind of visual boost at 30 I'm sure FR ups and downs is what it is. [We could be wrong of course]. Hmm I wonder cross gen assets and code is an issue.

Sounds great. 700 posts already? Concern is high lol

Not surprised this happened. Makng something out of nothing.

Which would be a travesty and a failure, if you ask me.

Doesn't a game need to be running north of 70fps and maybe closer to 80fps before you're able to provide a stable 60fps lock? I just don't see that happening very much at all this gen.

Especially for a game that originally targeted 30fps. They're trying to make this edition look head-and-shoulders above the PS3 version. Making it run 75fps locked to 60 would mean less visual upgrade. I guess they could use variable resolutions to maintain 60. But it would lose visual pop at random times.

I'm glad they're putting a 30 fps option in. I'll try it both ways, and pick whichever I like the feel of more. Sometimes I'm okay with 60, but 60 can just make some games feel off, or janky.

Probably doesn't help at all that low budget shows are filmed at 60 fps in the US, and higher budget shows are recorded at 30. Might be why I think 30 looks better (sometimes).
