i figured danielle would be fairly uncontroversial, just because she doesn't really alter the vibe of the show. what are you guys finding frustrating about her?

breckon's wii u experience was hilarious
I just don't think she's a very good addition. She's not funny, and it kind of seems like the rest if the guys look to her for current gamez jurnalizmz. I say that mockingly because it's a bit patronizing when they do that. I certainly don't give a shit about current stuff and news if I listen to idle thumbs.

Also, she made a gross misandry joke on twitter, so I don't know what she's about at all. Very weird.

Alsoalso, Steve being the 5th "I guess" member?!?!? For shame, Remo. v_v and J.P. "I'm now kind of working on Grim Fandango" LeBreton is the sixth.

Comedy is subjective and all but if you don't think NatureDipez is prime laughs I don't know what to say. Also I don't understand what you're getting at with the "current gamez jurnalizmz" thing. Can you explain?

I'm glad Danielle will be on for good. She may not have the weird wit of Jake and Nick, but she's still enjoyable to listen to. The fact that she plays and talks about new stuff (like Silent Hill 4, of course) can only be a plus to me. One of my favorite formerly-common recurring things on the 'cast is someone making absurd or hilarious observations about the latest AAA releases - or just shitting on them - and because by and large everyone else stopped playing that stuff, it's nice to have someone who will bring those to the table.

And yeah I know Nick can come be on whenever he wants, but damned if those aren't usually my favorite episodes. BreKon is here. BreDon. Is. Here.

Yes, I think the cast greatly benefits from someone that has to play lots of different games, much like the Thumbs did when they were still reviewers/journalists, otherwise it could get a bit echo chamber-y with the types of games they love (interestingly designed games, through-the-looking-glass games and Nintendo).

'Say Danielle, I hear you reviewed a game and you had thoughts and people disagreed with those thoughts. Thoughts?'

'Say Danielle, I hear there is this news that happened. What are your thoughts?'

'Say Danielle, I hear you went to E3. Thoughts???'

When we had Danielle on as a guest (along with most journalist guests) it was almost always because she'd been at an event or had played something current that we hadn't, and were interested in discussing through the lens of first hand impressions. Through those appearances we realized Danielle was a person we thought meshed well and brought a lot to our conversations on the cast so we asked her to join up in a more general, recurring position as host. I don't feel like this episode, for instance, when she is a regular host, was a Q&A with her about a specific subject.

I'm glad she's a regular. I was even thinking "I hope they make her a regular" right before it happened, then it happened so you can all thank me.

I even posted about it so if anything it's all thanks to me ;p

On a different note, man are the Breckon episodes a treat. I'm so glad Bethesda Softworks fired his ass XD

He quit! And I wish Nick was on more.

Also I love Dota Today. That is probably a dumb thing to say but I don't mind, as it's a show I have nothing to do with. It's strange to listen to entire episodes talking about a game I'll never play, just because I find the banter interesting ...

...

.....

I still haven't listened to a single episode of potatoday, and I've played the game for 400 hours! (Though I haven't played it at all in the last year or so.) My usual podcast listening schedule is way too tight to fit in another somewhat/not-at-all regular show, and I never remember to add any other shows when I go on a trip or listen to more podcasts than usual for some other reason.

So... She's a knowledgable source of information on current issues and topics? Man, yeah, I can see how that would be frustrating...

Yay Danielle!

I hope one day there is a megacast with Chris, Jake, Sean, Nick, Danielle, Steve and maybe JP or some other person.

Also, more Nintendo talk.

Sonic 4 was garbage, both times, but Generations was pretty good you guys! That's like a perfect example of the "opposite" Shovel Knight, where you're obviously adhering to retro mechanics and tone whilst not being afraid to update it, both in terms of intuitiveness and look.

Sonic 4 failed at doing any of these things well, of course.

Danielle has been an awesome addition to the cast. Someone who actually plays games.

Also I about lost my shit at Nick's Nintendo story, because it was like he was reading my mind. Even down to checking the stock on your phone as you are driving to the store that you make an excuse to buy something else at. We're sick.

One week after playing it, I'd be back to more EUIV, Dota 2, and whatever new FPS/competitive game my pals are playing. So, haven't taken the plunge yet.

Yep. He's the person on the show that most matches my gaming tastes. He's like my manic gaming twin.

Also, tell Nick to play EUIV. Seriously.

Get well soon Jake, it's not the same without you.

And now we know who's gonna read all the ads going forward :)

Danielle killing it this week.

She always does, I continue to be thrilled that she is a regular now.

Also, while I definitely got the impression from past episodes that Danielle's girlfriend plays games, I had no idea until today that she is dating Kotaku's Patricia Hernandez. I've often wondered if it would be weird to date someone in the exact same line of work as me. (Well I'm married so it would be super weird to date anyone at this point, but you know what I mean.)

Great episode. Some random thoughts

Castlevania 3 wasn't the only game to have that weird ass mapper and the improved sound, Lagrange Point (Space! Maybe Chris would be interested...) also did, and I totally dig some of the music:

On Jaws, I seem to remember it got people motion sick, and coincided with a bunch of other 20$ games that haunt the end of a generation. Anyone remember the NARC game from around then? You defeated a heroin addiction via a mini game. As for Jaws, the thing that always impressed me is that it still had keycards, you just had to eat the person carrying it and rub Jaws' tummy against the keypad.

From 2 weeks ago: killing dogs is not AITD (those were weird purple muppet birds) but Wolfenstein 3d! You knifed those mutts and even ate their dog food. Gross.

As for the pricing plan of Star Citizen, wonder if Chris ever used MAX.MSP? It had a video companion app called Jitter and a competitor called NATO. NATO let you do some serious video processing in realtime on a g3 mac, but it's creation was really interesting: it was either made by 3 women, or 1 man, and trying to buy it was a labyrinthine questionnaire that got weirder and weirder, but could save you a few bucks . Thank god not all coder artists are libertarians and that some hardcore marxist dadaist got into software! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nato.0+55+3d

P.S. Love Danielle, great add, some energy I felt when Sean started guest appearing way back.

Loving the addition of Danielle to the cast. She meshes really well with the rest of the Thumbs. Also: what's this I hear about Nick? Where does he work now?

I was pretty surprised tbh. I thought HP had just become one of those things that everyone in a certain circle knows, like LOTR or the original Star Wars trilogy

Honestly until the films came out, I didn't know a thing about Lord of the Rings. I was at a friend's house sometime after Fellowship came out and she put on the Rankin-Bass Return of the King film. I remember being kinda put out that the framing device of it spoils Frodo's missing finger? Even then she was incredulous. "How did you not know that?" And yet.

I've never read the Harry Potter books either, though I've seen the films from the third one on. Those flicks are like reading a multi-user edited draft of the Plot section of the wiki page.

Episodic Choices with No Real Consequences Games

I've read the first three books, and still feel like I know basically nothing about Harry Potter. Other than the first two books are essentially the same book.

Harry Potter is one of those things that I feel I should have seen, read or just generally be familiar with but am not. I saw the first movie in theaters when it released. That is the beginning and end of my exposure to HP. Much like Chris, I know two things about Dumbledore: he's gay and he gets killed by Snape. I'm not even sure I could pick him out of a lineup. When I try to picture him, all I can see in Grand Maester Pycelle.

I lost it when Danielle said "cybahpunk".

Growing up in Northwestern Ontario (think Minnesota, but farther north), I never realized that I had an accent until I lived in Toronto for 4 years. It was only pointed out to me on occasion, though.

It was really bad when I was in Utah for work. Some of the people would actually call me out on stuff. I felt like a sitcom character who had a one-liner but didn't realize they had one. I'd say something particular and all of a sudden the group would be like: Ha! He said it again!

I started to play into it a bit, although for the life of me, I can't remember what I was saying that made them go so crazy.

I had a coworker who had moved to Arizona from London who had a bad case of th-fronting (as I just learned it was called). He's also a DJ so when he'd talk about distributing some remixes he's done, we'd sort of wait in anticipatory glee for him to say "Emm Pee Free". I feel bad about it now, but I also still laugh a little. I assume, karmically, I will move some place else and it will be determined that I've been saying everything wrong forever.

Man, Sean is extra skatter-brained this episode. Everything goes into a giggle fest laughing at your own jokes without Jake. Quit yelling Sean and Danielle.

Also the silence after "I watched the game, I got enough of it"

Also Chris not knowing everything Wizard oriented blew me away.

Super frustrating Sean with your overtalking. Let Danielle & Chris complete their sentences. He is like the designer with "idea-diarrhea" holding the rest of a meeting hostage.

"I'm blown away"-Danielle, IGN.

I agree about Sean's interruptions. I haven't been able to finish several recent episodes because of it.

Sean should do a show called famous on famous where he just tells us how it is for like an hour. I guess kinda like the solo vids the Giantbomb guys do on occasion.

Holy shit. Chris's dream was incredible. (So incredibly it knocked Dani's dream out of conversation entirely unfortunately so we never found out what it was)
