Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Shadow is indeed slower. It's not really noticeable unless you play them side-by-side.

Also Shadow needs Jet shoes in order to keep pace with Sonic.
I remember them both being the same speed. Guess I was wrong.

Metal Sonic was the best character in battle mode by far though.

Yep, the way those Famitsu pages are phrased makes me think they're gonna basically spoil future POTD updates.

But if we're getting one each week, I guess there's gonna be some seriously juicy updates from Sakurai more commonly.

sakurai, just give us a f*cking good website with actual information, please..

If anything, I just hope some other punch-out characters make appearances in some form!
There's a good question. If we get one Punch-Out character as an assist trophy, who would you guys want it to be? I feel like King Hippo is the obvious choice, but they're all such funny characters.

Personally, I'd like Mr. Sandman and just have him one-hit KO anyone he touches. That guy is ingrained in my memory after all the bullshit he put me through.

Glad to be of service! Here's CF:

Captain Falcon, from the F-Zero series:
  • another winner of the Smash series perfect attendance award
  • very few changes to the character from the last iteration, so players used to playing with the Cap should have no problem picking him up this time around
  • Up Special - Falcon Dive: leaps up and grabs opponent, explodes to deal damage, functions as a grab and thus can strike shielding opponents
  • Neutral Special - Falcon Punch: charges up and unleashes a spectacular punch, very strong but leaves CF wide open, able to change direction and increase power(!) by tilting the stick in the opposite direction right after performing the move
  • Side Smash - Overheat Elbow: unleashes a strong long-range strike, considerably slow wind-up
  • Down Special - Falcon Kick: delivers a flaming kick, strikes diagonally downward when performed in the air
  • Side Special - Falcon Knuckle: dashes forward and uppercuts the opponent, lifts opponent upward when performed on the ground, sends opponents flying downward when performed in the air
  • Final Smash - Blue Falcon: summons his prized F-Zero racecar and slams into opponents directly in front of him

And then Lucina:

Lucina, from Fire Emblem: Awakening:
  • Uses the same techniques as Marth--probably because it's in her blood
  • Attacks do the same amount of damage regardless of which part of her blade strikes the opponent (unlikes Marth's tippers) making her an "easy character for anyone to pick up and use"
  • Just like in FE:A, she puts on and takes off her mask when appearing on stage and when taunting (note: no mention of whether or not you can choose to keep the mask on or off)
  • Side Smash: Slashes downward in front of her, quick and far-reaching and thus easy to use
  • Up Smash: Stabs upward with great force, sends out shockwaves to deal some damage to nearby opponents
  • Up Special - Dolphin Slash: jumps while slashing upward, very quick and thus useful for intercepting opponents approaching from the air
  • Side Special - Marvelous Combination: able to perform combos by pressing the button again after the first strike, slashes vary depending on which direction you tilt the stick in when pressing the button
  • Down Special - Counter: unleashes a counterslash when struck directly after performing the move, highly effective during free-for-alls and just after landing (note: seems to imply that landing lag has been reduced such that you actually can perform moves with relative speed after landing)
  • Neutral Special - Shield Breaker: sharply stabs forward, able to be charged, long-reaching but relatively slow wind-up

It does! All four will reappear after a certain amount of time passes OR when the player "makes a mistake". The latter is linguistically ambiguous (ミスする場合), and I'm not terribly well-versed in JP Smash lingo, so I can only speculate, but my guess is that the player whiffs an attack (i.e. attempts to use an attack with no tome and fails) and then the tome reappears.

Wow cool thanks for the translation

Great Tiger would be pretty good, teleporting and making clones to attack people.

This wording is really curious...

I'm on mobile here, so its hard to check.. But now I'm curious..

What word does the japanese version use for "falls" in the result screen?
Maybe its just fall in katakana, but who knows.. :p

ARGH

He had numerous horrible nerfs outside the physics. His knee was made dramatically harder to land and much weaker, his u-air's hitbox was reduced, and he lost the second jump reset with a Falcon Kick.

None of these are things he would mention in a Famistu article of this sort and changes to them would certainly fall under "few changes that allow old players to jump right in". I'm pretty sure he means stuff like "the Falcon Kick wasn't replaced by the Falcon Hurricane, etc."

Gotta be Glass Joe. He would be kinda like an Assist Trophy form of Wobbuffet - he would take a bunch of hits until he was knocked down, but then he would stand back up again and unleash a mighty counterattack, the strength depending on how much opponents hit him.

Ooh yeah, that would be fun. I wouldn't mind Disco Kid swooping in and just being a Starfy. That guy always cracks me up.

That could be cool as well!

Those were Proto Man, Shadow and Ms. Pac-Man. Each one shares the exact abilities of the characters they would be clones of. They even play the same in their respective games. Obviously you need all three because one third-party character shouldn't get special treatment over others.

nah man, his buster is chargeable and he can deflect attacks with his shield, among other finer things

someone posted this earlier. Oh my goddddddd

God dammit you guys, every time I look away for a minute you've posted five new pages

Anyway, I've been busy all day, so have a hilariously belated watermarkless image:

That's why I always like to go to the art academy community and see what's popular to get my hopes up

I like the guy going "This meat is tasty."

Dammit, now I want mozzarella sticks, but I don't have any.

Kirby learns four words from him.

Thunder!
Elthunder!
Arcthunder!
Thoron!
This is just making me wonder what a Shulk Kirby would sound like. Kirby going "Monado Bahstah!" would be hilarious.

I hope they reprint Awakening around Smash's release. Truly excellent title that's good even for those like me who usually don't like strategy.
Awakening's readily available, though. I just ordered a copy off of Amazon, for instance (I'd been meaning to this month anyway; Robin and Lucina's reveals just sweetened the pot a little).

I'm never gonna give out hope for Snake. With as many veterans from Brawl we're getting, I don't see why they'd pass up the opportunity.
Because Konami hasn't recently been known for making good decisions. Y'know, things like buying out Hudson and then shutting everything Hudson'd been doing down. Or publishing literally nothing but Metal Gear Solid and westernized Castlevania games, because they apparently have nothing else left.

If Sakurai really does choose to go all out on Alt costumes, I would love it if they were also unlockable. It would make it seems like so many more characters were available to be unlocked.

Don't know if already posted or if it's banned, from My Nintendo News
A GameStop manager has been in contact to say that he’s heard rumblings in the office that that every copy of Smash Bros for Wii U will come with a free Amiibo figure. He also says that he has been hearing that the street date for the Wii U version will be November 21st. He wishes to remain anonymous, so I can’t verify these claims. However it does sound fairly plausible. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long for Nintendo to grace us with an official release date.

Mega Man can also charge his buster (see: every game except 1, 2, 3, 9, and 10) and use Proto Man's shield (see: 7). Proto Man as a Mega Man alt would make a lot of sense as the two both have access to the Variable Weapon System that makes Mega Man's moveset so unique.

Either that or Quint, which would also be pretty neat but infinitely more esoteric.

I'm most interested in Mega Man, and least interested in Pac Man, or Lucina, but I think of her more as another Marth than an actual newcomer. I don't really have a top five. All of the newcomers look like a perfect fit, and I'm looking forward to trying them all. The veteran changes so far have looked great too. Glad ZSS and Sheik are their own characters. All I'm missing is Ganondorf, and then I'd be completely happy. Not having Ness though would be quite a shame.

Actually, one thing I'm hoping is coming back that hasn't been mentioned at all is the stage builder. I liked messing around with that in Brawl, even though the AI could be pretty dumb.

Are we allowed to post a magazine scan that's text only, and a small insert?

Because the image I saw that purported to talk about Chrom being cut and such wasn't from the big image with Lucina and Robin, but just a small text box.

EDIT: Wii U Version one month after 3DS would be insane. And that would probably mean the JP release would be in October.

What issues are those? I was never really into the archie comics, but my interest has risen as of late....I just dont know where to start reading though. Those strips you showed seem interesting and not so teenage love drama show like the few that ive read.

Those are from the current writer's run, which starts at 160. That specific page comes from Sonic Universe, which is a spin off comic that deal with other characters, and they have their own pages without cluttering the main comic. If you really want to start reading Archie Sonic, it's best to start from the beginning and just read on until you hit a point where you're not enjoying it, and then jump to either 160, or 252 (a near full reboot to the universe that makes the comic much closer to the games and gets rid of most of the previous comic only characters)

Wouldn't pushing MGS because they literally (read: literally) have nothing else make them do their best to get marketing from all over though?

I mean, it's no way to run a business, but it's the kind of short-sighted marketing they ought to be jumping at any opportunity for.

ON TOPIC: Oh man this thread is moving so damn fast. @_@

The issue I just showed Sonic Universe Number 1. Sonic comics are split into two things, Sonic the hedgehog and Sonic universe. Sonic the hedgehog usually reserved for main stories usually involving sonic and is the oldest lasting I believe over a decade . It used to do all of them, but his friends got so big ( specially Shadow and Knuckles they tend to get the most attention either directly or through mention ), not wanting to take a chance on solo friend comic like they did with knuckles all those years ago so they made sonic universe back in 09 I believe, ( although I think knuckles and chaotix could carry a comic , but thats just me).

Good news, for you the sonic comics just went through a massive reboot. Because legal issues, they have purged many elements and story cues from the previous comic book universe and can start a new. And they aren't that far in, so you could just pick up a comic sonic universe or hedgehog explore. Along with that all the comics seem to be exploring the video game plots right now rather than their own thing, so a lot of the comics are easily segmented.

Also Shadow vaporizes a dude.

If you are interested in pre-reboot comics ( that's where the beginning part of sonic universe takes place ) you can ask around the sonic community thread, about good issues. Thing is though , the comic's writter now wasn't always the writter, he is however the best. But before him there was someone else, the cause of the legal issues and the reboot and a man who may have fallen into some form of insanity creating his own sonic fanfiction. The issue with him is, his comics are a mixed bag of opinions, he has written very terrible comics, he has also however come up with very fantastic ideas. So fanbase kinda of split on whether he is shit or not. So you will get very varying answers depending on the guy.

And before that guy it was another guy I believe, but those are the super early comics , and those are 90's chubby short sonic , super hokey stuff,

So how would you guys rank the top 5 newcomers you're most excited to try out? For me it's probably:

1) Little Mac
2) Rosalina & Luma
3) Pac-Man
4) Robin
5) Mega Man

What is most compelling to me is how interesting a character's moveset & mechanics are, followed by how much I personally like the character. That's more or less the frame of mind I ranked everyone from.

Little Mac's ferocious ground game being balanced by really weak aerials is intriguing to me and the OHKO mechanic bumps him up to the top. I also loved the 2010 Punch Out game and think they've done a great job with all his different costumes.

Rosalina & Luma is a really great addition in my mind because, oddly enough, she is probably the most fleshed out character in the Mario universe, contrary to space-peach accusations. The way that they have not only implemented Luma with her but also tied in the gravity mechanics of the Galaxy games is just brilliant. Overall I think she has the most inventive implementation out of all the new comers, but falls just shy of Little Mac because I've wanted him as a character since before Rosalina existed.

Pac-Man looks to be very well implemented also, and I think Sakurai absolutely nailed the 3D design of Pac-man. Really clever that he transforms into his limbless arcade incarnation for his final smash and seemingly recovery move. The fact that his taunts and move set also include nods to many other 80's games is a nice addition as well. And of course, I love that the ghosts are part of his moveset. Still hoping for a Ms. Pac-Man alt.

Robin reminds me of Golden Axe characters in the way you could build up magic spells, and I love that. The thoron move looks devastating just like it should and frankly I'm really glad we got this highly unique character instead of Chrom as expected. Definitely one of the more mechanically inventive characters in the game without seeming too clunky. I don't have any experience with the FE series, though, so I have no personal connection to the character. It speaks well to how interesting his moveset is that he is still in the top five.

Mega Man is a great addition to the roster and they definitely nailed his 3d design, just as with pac-man. He blends in with the Smash roster much better than Snake ever did and I love how well his moveset ties into actual abilities from the games.

1. Mega Man
2. Greninja
3. Little Mac
Not really interested in the rest.

You're a saint, thanks bro!

So how would you guys rank the top 5 newcomers you're most excited to try out?

1. Greninja: I love fast and fluid characters. This guy is a ninja frog with water powers. I think that writes itself.
2. Palutena: Large AoE attacks and great close quarters potential? Sold. This one is a godsend. (Heh)
3. Rosalina & Luma: STANDOOO
4. Robin: Red Mage. Was always going to be in the high end of the characters revealed if it happened.
5. Megaman: I'm a huge Megaman fan. This is going to be the best. Not sure if he'll be a main though, I never fare too well with strictly zoning characters.

No way in hell they will give out "free" amiibos. Maybe a bundle if anything.

I could see it; they don't cost *that* much and Nintendo to make and they aksi need to do everything they can to both push the Wii U and ensure Amiibos are off to a strong start.

Either way, which figure would they include? Either they randomize it, make it Mario (because it's Mario), or maybe a Mii one (since really, who cares about collecting that one anyway ;)

Mega Man can also charge his buster (see: every game except 1, 2, 9, and 10) and use Proto Man's shield (see: 7). Proto Man as a Mega Man alt would make a lot of sense as the two both have access to the Variable Weapon System that makes Mega Man's moveset so unique.

Either that or Quint, which would also be pretty neat but infinitely more esoteric.

But Mega doesn't do either in SSB4 afaik. Plus, Sakurai himself said that as long as there's a small difference in abilities, they get their own roster spot. I guess since they're limited to one character per third party, it'd be okay but also a bit disappointing.

I adore King Hippo so I'm gonna hold on to my dream hope of him being playable someday instead. Maybe a villains DLC pack?!?! Haha do for an assist Glass Joe could be fun

Wait, he's canonically slower than Sonic? Sorry the only game Sonic he was in I'm familiar with is Sonic Adventure 2. Didn't they play exactly the same, both go Super form and took equal turns to defeat the final boss? I thought they kept them equal but then again I haven't seen Shadow since that era as all the Sonic I have are Colors and Lost World.

Shadow was even slower in that ( he also controls better ), that theme is preserved in the Sonic racing games.

They both can go super sure, but what shadow can do in a super form or regular is far different.Shadow in that game is mostly resticted to running a homing attacks because they weren't thinking of how his powers could be used in game yet. Shadow can slow down time, warp, and use energy based attacks. If you want a good look at what a potential shadow the hedgehog moveset could be. Look at the game Sonic Battle. He also has AOE of attacks in his own game. Him being slow is kind of the price you pay for being able to do all that stuff I just listed. Also he has rocket boots and could possibly do some c. Viper type stuff.

Also play sonic battle its good.

Also if you want to see shadow's sonic battle moveset some what realized in a game, the better shadow the hedgehog mods for brawl, are essentially that.

I could see it; they don't cost *that* much and Nintendo needs to do everything they can to both push the Wii U and ensure Amiibos are off to a good start.

It would make digital copies kind of a bad deal. I could see a bundle that has a discount but a free one is too much to ask from a company that just had the worst CN prizes ever, lol.
