MS: Xbox One June 2014 sales more than double May 2014's sales

Sorry, but the Kinect wasnt selling the system as was obvious by sales numbers tanking. Getting the price down is key. Most people dont give a rats ass about kinect, certainly not enough to pay more than the more powerful console being sold by Sony.

Getting the price below the PS4 is key. Price parity when you don't have hardware parity is pointless. They should've taken the hit and kept the Kinect bundled but still lowered the price. At least that way it would be a little less black and white dollar vs dollar.

Not on any console team here, but I don't see why MS should be concerned yet.

They're still second ahead of the Wii U (dead last) for Overall US LTD, having overtaken them since March 2014. The LTD gap between 1 (PS4) and 2 (XBONE) is just around 590K (circa May 2014) and people are already dancing over its grave.

Folk are acting like the PS4 has a multi-million unit lead in the US already lol.

Let's see those PS4 numbers for the month before declaring June a bust and handing MS the "L" for this month, shall we?

Too obvious?

I think PS4 to Xbone sales will begin to settle around 2:1 in NA, especially post Destiny, and I don't see much else on the horizon to change that either. Both will have the same opportunities in hardware cost reductions and neither will go balls out trying to jump the gun and eat losses. And we all know at this point exclusives don't actually factor much into what the average joe's purchasing plans are.

Sep NPD will be very interesting. Then again I guess most NPD's this year have been :)

I actually think the $399 Xbox One ends up looking way worse than the $499 with kinect. at $399 with no kinect and being less powerful than the PS4, it just makes the PS4 the obvious choice where as with the kinect version at least there's one differentiator that you have to consider

MS should have gone with $399 w/Kinect, in my opinion. Maybe pack in Sports.

Exactly. This price drop would probably be most effective for the "former Wii owners" that may not know the power discrepancy.

If I were Nadella I'd probably scale down the Xbox team, cancel any work on future hardware, and try to eke out an underwhelming but profitable few years before shutting the whole thing down.

Try and spin what you can of the Xbox brand into services like Xbox music, video, etc.

We know big changes are going on at Microsoft, this poor performance comes at exactly the wrong time.

If I was running Microsoft, I'd be starting up the design process on making the Xbox TV, a $100 set top box that is designed to compete with Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, and PlayStation TV, but still keep the Xbox One around. Really, there should have been two boxes, the $100 Xbox TV for all their media hopes and dreams which just happens to run Metro Apps and thus can play simple games, and the $399 third Xbox which was designed on the outset to be for gamers specifically, but could still run the same Metro Apps which Xbox TV does.

IMO it is. It's the consumers console, the most powerful console, the "every experience is ether here" console, etc. There's not really a huge library of games to sell it.

You sure about that? It's more than just "hype" that's selling the console...

Plus you seem to forget about tons of games that PS4 has more than Xbox One does, including indie games.

Mmm so is this like a preemptive press release for tomorrows press release? The wording doesn't inspire a lot of enthusiasm, not to mention the fact it even exists.

Share-holders already extra sensitive about Xbox division profits werent going to allow that. While I agree with you in an ideal scenario, we should keep this discussion rooted in what is/was realistically possible. Their only course of action was to stay at $500 with Kinect or ditch Kinect and drop the price. The best solution which also accomplishes what you are getting at is, of course, to simply drop the price on the unit without Kinect to $350. But with current cost of production rumored to be in the $350-$400 range that potentially starts to bite into profit as well.

They really are in a tough spot primarily because the average consumer no longer views Kinect as a $100 value-add.

Edit: This is because the original Kinect was a spectacular failure that never lived up to the hype, despite selling a bunch of units...combined with the fact that MS launched with the Kinect 2.0 at the core of their marketing push but have yet to actually show a single game that uses it in any meaningful way (and no, dance games dont count).

$349 Xbox One in time for the holidays would be an interesting move no?

Months after a 400$ drop? At that point you would just be pissing off your current consumers and killin any consumer trust you have. What would stop people from saying, " f it I'll just wait 6 months and get one for 250$ ".

What exclusives come out the few months after Sunset?

QB sometime in the first half of 2015. Fable Legends sometime in mid 2015. Halo 5, Forza 6, maybe a Gears collection in the later part of 2015. With any luck one of the CGI trio might make it out next year, though I think all three will probably be 2016.

haha is there even anything that would create a shot in the arm for xbox one sales?

$299 Halo MCC bundle for BF.

It's funny because he made this post on 5-29-2014.

Maybe I should post my day to day activities on gaf (ala twitter) so my post history would be chronological.

I purchased a xb1 in May to go along with the PS4 I had. Gamestop was having 50% extra credit on PS4/Xb1 in June. Since I didn't really need both I returned the XB1 I got in May back and traded my PS4 in for basically full credit ($397) toward an XB1. There's your gotcha.

Was there something wrong with the XB1 you got in May then?

So you bought a PS4. Then you bought a XB1. Then you traded in both the XB1 and the PS4 for another XB1? Or am I reading this wrong?

I've seen you mention All-Stars numerous times in numerous threads as your evidence that MCC will cause the Xbox One to skyrocket in popularity.

Thing is, SNES was already doing quite well by the time that game came out. I don't see how All Stars selling well on a system that was selling well 20 years ago equates to MCC causing the Xbox One's sales to shoot past the PS4.

Uhh what?!?! So you had an XB1 and a PS4 and traded both in to get another XB1? This makes 0 sense. Why would you do that? Just trade in the PS4 and buy some games for your already purchased XB1.

Like it's been said a few posts above, that would be dumb, they would only piss the existing owners and make the prospects wait until they drop the price again in about six months...

These. It would also show consumers that Microsoft is desperate & that their product doesn't hold a lot of value.

History has proven that price drops doesn't matter much in the long run for a struggling console. Remember what happened with systems like Dreamcast? Original Xbox? Gamecube? Yeah.

Agreed. The XB1 needs to be seen as a value proposition. In order to do that it needs to offer at least one of these following options in order to be at least on par with the PS4. In reality they need to better if they want a chance to catch up.

  • $349: Kinectless XBox
  • $399: Kinectless Xbox with free game
  • $399: Kinectless Xbox with 1 year Xbox Gold
  • $399: Xbox with Kinect
I think the XB1 will get down to these prices but Microsoft wants to coordinate the price drop with a big event that will move consoles, like the release of CoD or the Halo Collection. That is why they took only a half measure with the $399 Kinectless bundle right now. Unfortunately I don't think Microsoft has the time to wait that long. They have to at least stay within reach of the PS4 or risk being written off completely in the public's mind.

July could be brutal for them, but Microsoft should try to mitigate the harm by offering unofficial store deals in order to promote sales like the did before. Then they can hype an official price drop of some kind in August to coincide with the release of Madden.

Late to the news, but my first thought upon seeing the thread was that MS was, once again, announcing first so they could get some good PR before the other shoe dropped. In this case the other shoe being NPD tomorrow when Sony announces they outsold them for the month.

Seeing they just barely edged April's sales rate and are certainly well below the current PS4 pace confirms this. The unbundling did not successfully rejuvenate Xbox One sales. MS must be getting very worried at this point.

Too obvious?

When you consider that the Xbox One is a billion-dollar product in terms of its budget:

- $1 billion claimed to have been spent on games development
- $400m NFL deal,
- $100m on controller alone
- Several hundred million on marketing etc

Selling around 160k a month in June (when May was 77k and July likely to be less than June) in your strongest market is pretty f*cking godawful. Especially from a shareholder POV. I mean damn.
