Serperior would be the most interesting to use in Smash. A snakelike character without limbs would be a first.

Chesnaught can burn in shit tier.

I've never played an Advance Wars game, but wouldn't you prefer an Advance Wars character to feel like they came out of that game instead of just being in the game only as a Snake replacement?

I'm against any new character being made into a straight Snake replacement, but I agree with your idea of making an original character that at the same time evokes some of Snake's old playstyle with explosives and traps.

I'll take Brigadier Betty over Snake any day. Either version

Serperior represent..but chesnaught being worst than meganium is madness!
Yeah. I edited because after thinking about it, Meganium is just the worst.

Man, gen 2 had the lamest final evolutions. I played through gold and silver multiple times with each one and I remember being disappointed not one, not twice, but all three times.

Yeah, as a big Advance Wars fan, I'd rather have an original moveset. I don't think Snake's moveset would fit well with a character there at all.

I'd rather they just keep Snake all together.

Yeah, I feel like an Advance Wars character would be closer to a pet type of character than anybody else.

Speaking of, Tingle would also work like that - in Rosy Rupeeland, he sucks fighting alone, but you can hire bodyguards to help you fight. Would make for an interesting mechanic.

Isn't that kind of Olimar's gimmick?

Not at all for me, if it wasn't for Serperior I'd say Gen 5 easily. I was pretty disappointed with Gen 4 too.

At least Gen 2 made it seem like the final evolution was a natural progression from stage 1 of the starter to stage 3. Samurott looks nothing like I'd expect a final evolution of Oshawott to look.

Hold on, such a grab will never work because each character has a set grabbed animation and a coil would need to keep size in check; totally unreasonable.

Why cut Squirtle and Ivysaur when they already have complete movesets aside from a down special? It seems like it would take relatively little effort to just keep them around.

Eh. Gen 2 and Gen 5 both prove that starters need something unique to stand out. Serperior is cool as hell though, so Gen 5 wins out easily. Plus its firetype isn't a shitty monotype and its water type isn't completely outclassed in-game by the greatest water type ever made, Quagsire.
I don't agree with Gen 4 being bad at all though. I didn't care for Infernape's design, but he's pretty fun to use, and I loved Empoleon and Torterra.

It's a bit more work than that (tweaking them to look better, etc.) and they might not want to make the roster seem to heavily focused on Pokemon.
I think we're mostly just needing something to discuss at this point, though.

I raise this challenge: choose one of each type of starter (Fire / Water / Grass) for Smash. Don't worry about popularity, just personal favorites and potential movesets.

Go.

Playable Torterra.

I'm literally drooling. BEST GRASS STARTER.

EDIT:

Fire for me is Emboar. Fuck ya'll if he's the third Fire/Fighting, he's awesome. For Water probably Swampert, specially Megs.

I think it's in the best interest for Nintendo that the Pokemon that are currently used as mascots and in the spotlight getting more exposure in Smash. Plus, of course, I would assume they want to keep some stuff for Pokken, and also not seem to have a significant portion of the roster be composed of Pokemon, and have more characters than their other big series (particularly Mario and Zelda).

Uhh... I only ever played the first one, so... Charizard, Blastoise and Venusaur I guess?

If Pokken is more like a traditional fighter, I don't see anyone from Smash but Lucario, Greninja, and Mewtwo having a chance at being in.

Sure, but I'd imagine their brawl model could even be used as a starting point for their new models. Although my dream scenario would be switching them to Blastoise and Venusaur. That would also be a reasonable explanation for why they weren't revealed alongside Charizard. That would come out to 7 pokemon without mewtwo or 8 pokemon with him. I think that's reasonable.

Greninja
Torterra
Blaziken

I already like Greninja a lot and think he's great for Smash. Torterra is my favorite starter so yeah. lol

I don't like Blaziken much, but the idea of having a Muay Thai fighter in Smash is just so appealing to me. Bonus points if he could throw out Tiger Shots.

Eh, I'd love for all the Pokemon to return, but please no Squirtle -> Blastoise. Squirtle's moveset just would not work on a heavy character, he's meant to be a speedy type.

charmeleon, dewott, chespin/chesnaught
Not a fan of final evolutions I see. I hated Dewott's as it just seemed like an entirely different Pokemon at that point.

Torterra could be really cool, hadn't thought of that!

Also, looking at the starters, they've done a really good job at keeping them looking distinct from each other (even if they couldn't resist Fire/Fighting for a while):

While I love Sceptile, I feel that he would just be very similar to Greninja if he was added to Smash. I mean, he has that Leaf blade that is similar to the water katana things that Greninja has, he's also known for being speedy, has a potential charge shot... I don't know. It'd make sense to add Sceptile if Gamefreak wanted to keep the starter trio in some form in Smash 4 and it also helps promoting the RS remakes, but I can't see Sceptile being very different from what Greninja offers already.

It'd be amazing if they could figure out a moveset for Torterra, because it'd be definitely unique! If not, other grass types from RS could work: Breloom is already a fighter, Ludicolo is just awesome, Roserade probably exists in the remakes. None of them are really popular though.

Prediction:

The Kim Kardashian game will be announced as an eShop downloadable at Comic Con, alongside a newcomer trailer for Kim herself

Go.

Chesnaught, Infernape, Empoleon

Chesnaught could be smash's first straight up grappler with most of his moves involving him throwing opponents, and his down special being a type of counter with Spiky Shield.

Infernape would be another monkey but with projectiles, and other fire related hi jinks.... or something... hush, I like the thing.

Empoleon would in my mind be a low friction high weight powerhouse who's easily combo'd, but packs a mean punch. Think Ganondorf living in Luigi's slippery world.
