Initial Thoughts on Borderlands V Destiny

Should I post my Metal Gear Solid 5 The Phantom Pain (based off a trailer I watched) vs. Splinter Cell Blacklist here?

I was thinking about waiting till both games were out and I had played them to compare, but this thread has got my thinking /s.

Bordelands is fun. . .the first time through. After that. It gets old. Quick. The scaling system is just god fucking awful, and I doubt it's going to be fixed for the Pre-Sequel.

Also folks moaning about the lore in Destiny but praising BL - are you serious? BL is a Mel Brooks script done by P. T. Anderson. Destiny is Neil Blomkamp trying his hand at Star Wars.

Scaling in Borderlands 1 actually wasn't too bad, ended up using some really good guns for a couple dozen levels. Borderlands 2's "guns 3 levels below you are worthless" is pretty awful, and I hope they strike a much better balance in 3. I don't have much hope for Pre Sequel fixing many faults at all, but would be happy to be wrong.

As for "lore", Borderlands has some pretty cool tidbits (mostly ecosystem/sci fi stuff), but the quality in writing for Borderlands is the humor. Yes it's not for everyone, but for what it is it's very well done. Destiny, For what it is...does not seem to be well done, story-wise. Borderlands is a comedy by a comedian, Destiny is a space opera done by...someone not good at space operas. Which is weird, because it's actually by people who did something very similar very well...several times.

The humor/worldview of Borderlands is so off-putting to me that it greatly reduces any enjoyment that may otherwise be there. I had some fun with the first one playing co-op with friends, but I strongly dislike just about everything that is not the core gameplay systems.

Destiny>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>any Borderlands game.

Unlike BL I'm actually enjoying the shit out of Destiny.

Can Destiny be played offline, as a single player experience?

There is no fast internet in my area, so online shooters are unplayable for me.

People keep bringing up this humor about Borderlands except it was never funny.

Although, Destiny isn't exactly well written. The Darkness stuff sounds like it was straight out of a Dexter script.

But gameplay? Destiny is feels smooth, is actually fun and competitive which has potential. At this point Destiny is infinitely the superior but it really depends where Bungie goes with it. The only thing Borderlands has on Destiny is the fact that it can be played on PC.

Borderlands 1 and 2 were both fun but they were the EXACT same thing as eachother. Destiny is much better IMO and I have played and beaten both BL 1 and 2.

I've noticed that certain game modes are marked with "requires Playstation Plus" so perhaps? I couldn't give you a definite answer, but it seemed as if the story missions and explore modes may not be locked out if you have no internet.

It's confirmed that the whole game requires an internet connection to play. Strikes, Raids, and Crucible require PS+.

They is a mission in the BETA that links you with 2 other Guardians if you don't already have a fireteam and from the multiple times I've done that mission at this point, trying to do it Solo is unfeasible. I don't know if these missions are one off things or considered part of the main game/story, but I'd imagine it is.

My random teammates dropped out at the Tank last night on a level 8 run. I solo'ed the Tank and the boss afterwards. I think the game auto-adjusts difficulty based on the amount of people attempting the scenario. It's a tedious mission no matter the size of your team.

I actually prefer the pace of the loot in Destiny to that of Borderlands. Sure, it doesn't dole things out as fast but the upgrades seem meaningful and a lot of them have upgrade paths as well so you are always working towards something.

I just don't like how disjointed the mission design is in Destiny. Based on the level 20 mobs scattered on the map, you'll be revisiting the beta map a ton.

Destiny gunplay is mostly very satisfying, but one area where Borderlands was fantastic was the elemental DOT. Enemies running around on fire, screaming, several quotes per (human) enemy while on fire. Destiny has none of that, and elemental guns don't even seem to do DOT. Only DOT I've noticed is the Ranger's fire grenade. Elements in general feel tacked on in Destiny, but maybe it's because I don't really understand their effects.
Pay attention to the shield color on certain enemies, Knights and Wizards especially...

You might be revisiting it, but I don't think it will be for the reason you think. I seriously doubt there will be any back-tracking, if that's what you're worried about (not that it really matters, because on the faster Sparrows it takes no time at all to make it across the entire map).

I figure they'll move you onto another map or two to get to level 20 and then bring you back to were you started.

The "problem" I have is that you need to return to the Tower between missions which is a load to orbit, a load to the tower, a load back to orbit and then a load to the next mission. And the missions presented in the beta had you covering a lot of the same ground. Maybe the repetition is culled later in the game but they really should have let you taken missions straight from your ghost to reduce the amount of time the player spends looking at load screens.

I am getting the next Borderlands [Xbox 360 as its not new gen yet]
and not getting Destiny
why?
because I like the single player aspect of Borderlands, which Destiny does not have
I am not into multiplayer, at all.. but I will play coop with a game I like

I played all of their games Borderlands plus all of the DLC

This is most definitely a problem, especially with the horrible load times in the alpha/beta. I think there should be a way to return directly to the tower presented to you after a mission, as the loading is completely ridiculous.

???

Destiny has just as much of a single player as Borderlands does. You can play the entire story solo, if so you choose.

Destiny isn't trying enough to craft a personality, whereas Borderlands tries too hard. They both could use a little drifting towards a happy medium.

Though I will say the try-hard approach yields memorable lines and characters far more frequently than the opposite. With all the games they have to their name and years in the industry, Bungie's most memorable character has been a wholesale plagiarism of the drill sergeant from Aliens.

I played maybe 2 hours of Borderlands 2, but have already put in at least twice that into the Destiny beta. It's really making me hope that Gearbox will be inspired to at least do some of the same kind of "shared-world" aspects of Destiny into the next Borderlands game. The impromptu nature of some of the boss encounters and events in Destiny could really be used to great effect in Borderlands 3. Maybe even drop the "3", call it "Borderlands Unlimited" or something.

I honestly don't know if Destiny isn't trying hard enough, or if it's trying too hard to deliberately strip all personality out of the game. There is literally nothing anyone can find objectionable about any element of the game. It's consummately crafted, focus-group approved ph7 perfection.

Borderlands 2's writing makes me chuckle and vomit in about equal measure, but I appreciate that they espoused a -perspective-. The lack of a voice in Destiny, even keeping in mind that this is just a beta, is something I find disappointing and troubling for its future.

That's what happens when your game and expectations and budget all balloon out of control. All personality is stripped away to homogenize the package as much as possible to appeal to as many people as possible.

As long as 2K is happy with several million Borderlands sales, they'll let Gearbox do their thing, assuming Gearbox doesn't attempt to also homogenize the experience to try to grow the audience.

It's the flaw in the thinking that everything must grow all the time and never contract (which can be considered a flaw in capitalism and investments as well). In order to grow the audience, you have to have fewer things that can piss off an audience. But the same things that can piss off certain audience members are considered personality and greatness traits that elate other audience members towards that game. Kinda like how the difficulty and atmosphere of despair in Dark Souls will turn off plenty of gamers, but it's also why other gamers find the series one of the GOAT.

Borderlands 2 just feels so... rickety? Is the best term. The shooting mechanics feel almost like an afterthought in comparison to Destiny. Destiny just feels so solid and refined. I found myself switching weapons based on need and what fit the situation best. In Borderlands I found myself switching weapons because I'd run out of ammo.

I actually prefer being able to make or design my own Guardian in Destiny to having to choose a character to play in Borderlands. Part of the reason I'm passing on the pre-sequel, I don't like any of the player characters.

They both have different tones as well. Borderlands is meant to be comical, and in some ways satirical or the action/fps genre, meanwhile Destiny is trying to invoke the sort of epic questing and adventure/exploration feel.

Wait. People don't like Tiny Tina? She was one of the few NPCs I liked in the borderlands franchise.

Also, just being color-coated doesn't mean one color is automatically better than another. A green gun could give you the accuracy and power you want, where as the "better" blue one could have less accuracy and power but a higher fire-rate and the ability for the gun to talk to you. If you go for controlled one shot head shots, I'd take the green one any day.
A blue weapon is flat out superior to a green even if the stats are not what you want. Also in Borderlands people only care about orange and pearlescent legendary weapons. Green, blue and purple weapons are just garbage that clutters the inventory.
