Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

Hmm... as hyped as I am for this, it's kind of a weird way to reveal a stage. "Here's a stage, except I'm not actually specifically confirming it as a stage!" Has he done this before with other stages?

It's just strange; hopefully I'm not reading too much into it. I'm super hyped about this being the new Star Fox stage, and it looks gorgeous. I'm also glad it's based on Assault and not on 64 yet again! (Not that 64 isn't awesome, but it's nice that Sakurai is acknowledging the most recent console-based entry in the series.)

"This looks familiar!"

That was the first shot of the Pilotwings stage and the text was just what I posted above.

While we're on the topic of old stages, what are the 3 stages (apart from Corneria) that you want to see return from Brawl/Melee/64?

Mine would probably be Temple, Big Blue, and Great Bay. It's hard to pick only 3!

Super Smash Bros 64: Mushroom Kingdom (using those pipes was awesome!)
Super Smash Bros. Melee: TEMPLE TEMPLE TEMPLE TEMPLE TEMPLE
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Shadow Moses Island (♫CALLING TO THE NIGHT♫)

I don't care if those tourney losers hate it or not. I want Hyrule: Temple back. It needs some kind of a graphical update though.

You'll get your temple in a visual style that doesn't match the current game's aesthetics and scaled weirdly with the player models and you'll like it, you filthy casual.

Pic of the day. This island looks familiar!

Pic of the day. Isn't Kirby drawn with a familiar artsy style?

Pic of the day. Pop quiz! Who is this monster, and where is it from? The cage may serve as a hint.

Pic of the day. Yar, I wants to watch some o' that Smash action, too, ye great beast!

Pic of the day. Where am I……??
To be clear, the new Super Smash Bros. games do not feature a story mode like The Subspace Emissary.

Pic of the day. Looks like someone's enjoying the bachelor life in this pad.

And there's today's pic.

Smash selling more than destiny confirmed!

Wii U version of Destiny to be made at last!

As much as I like playing it with fancy PS4 graphics I'd totally play it on Wii U also.

tournament winners also don't like it

That's because y'all play the wrong format. 1 Stock 3min FFA, either last man standing or the character with the highest damage when the time runs out wins. Anyone who isn't on the lower part of the stage after 10s is disqualified. Insanely fun to play and also a BLAST to watch, especially once everyone is north of 200% dmg .P

Aparoid Queen boss pls

Nah we need Giant Disc Pigma or whatever that thing was.

Not sure how I feel about this stage if it's on the Great Fox again, it's a classic stage layout that's fun but yet another SF stage using the same idea for the third time (fourth if we include the alt layout of Melee Venom) is a bit of a cop out.

Huh that's actually... I'm going to try that next friday

It really is insanely fun. Items optional. When we still played Melee this was one of the favorite "game modes", me and my friends always had a blast. Even us scrubs sometimes got to 250%-300% before a KO occured. I'd REALLY like to see how someone with actual techskill fares *_*

I hope we get a good Earthbound stage

Summers maybe? Or perhaps Lost Underworld? Would be great with that prehistoric setting. Hell I'd be cool with the Stonehenge Base too.

New Pork City better not be returning or I'll have to kick Sakurai's butt.

I haven't played Earthbound at all yet (huge sin, I know:P) but I've seen a speedrun of Mother 1 and I'm pretty sure that the Final Battle against Giygas could be turned into a great stage with some artistic liberty on Sakurai's part

Anybody got any links to extended Sakurai interviews? For any Smash game/from any time period. Preferably in-depth stuff similar to Iwata Asks.

I'd be really interested in his design and thought process, Sakurai seems very elusive to me and I'd love to know more.

Smashers at the local gaming place call it Fight Club

and I can see why

Sooo....did you guys call the custom stages in SSBB where you build a giant cube with exactly one open block Fight Club 2? :P

99 Stock matches where everyone went almost up to 999% damage...damn, those were the times :P

Ah, a familiar friend returns looking better than ever. Wouldn't be a proper Smash Bros game without the ability to fight on the back of the Great Fox.

The only level in the entire series to be playable in every single game (Battlefield and Final Destination were not playable in 64)

What me and my friends would do was build a large enclosed square with a falling platform on the top to enter it. When the platform respawned you were obviously trapped inside.

Inside the giant square was a navigable maze and many different levels. We would play 3 minute matches with Smashballs on high. The goal was to be the one holding the Smashball when the timer ran out. You wind up with astronomically high damage in a completely enclosed space running for your life trying to have the Smashball at time up and it was really a lot of fun.

Not Fight Club, but you reminded me of this.

Edit: obviously this was four players.

The 'Challenger Approaching' banners have already been removed from the website. Clearly another character reveal soon.

Yes?

No...

Cool picture today! Can't wait to see how this stage plays. Hopefully exactly like Corneria.

My thing was to build an enclosed cube custom stage, with flat ground at the bottom, but spikes at both edges of the floor beside the walls. Played it on high gravity stamina mode. Was almost interesting.

Ohhhh yeah, sometimes we'd also do this with falling platforms, no maze though. Refresh my memories please, I think the blocks could fall down when certain items spawned on them, right? And sometimes you'd just glitch through the wall when Marth hit you with his Final Smash at 999% dmg. We also played this with four players, although with time instead of stock and all items. Basically an even harder version of the giant cube with one missing block :D

You know, if the DLC characters are handled well, I could honestly say I'd be happy with SSB4 being the swan song to the series. Let's say there's 52 launch characters including "Mii Fighter" as 49-51 and Random as 52. If we got, say, 8, I could see a lineup (in order) of:

Inkling (Splatoon) - Ganon maybe? (not dorf) - Saki (Advance Wars) - Isaac - Wonder Red - Dark Samus - Pokemon Rep - Snake

That way you end up with a mix of light and heavy-hitters in the end distribution process with a final little "kept you waiting, huh?" What if the trophy guessing game newcomer hints were actually pointing to DLC? :O

Honestly, as long as the Inklings make it in this time around, I think Smash Bros. could stay "caught up" for a generation or two if Nintendo just keeps on churning out remakes / ports / Big Five sequels for the most part.
