Legend of Korra Book 3: Change |OT| SCHEDULEBENDING

here's my guess on the timeline:

1. legend of korra first pitched while nick was still trying to make a series out of the last airbender with films and a television presence, like what they're doing with ninja turtles.
2. for some reason nobody wanted to continue the movie series, but contracts were signed for the show, and production was already underway so it only made sense to move forward.
3. when korra aired, toy deals were in the works, and initial high ratings led to the greenlighting of additional seasons beyond the first two.
4. the toy deals fell through at the end of season one for some reason- maybe the demographics breakdown showed more adults or more women watching the show than toy companies expected, scaring them off.
5. nickelodeon decided to just burn off season 2 fairly unceremoniously, and maybe used it as a test for other shows, since the series would be getting a limited run (let's see what happens when we put it on fridays, and then online, and now on saturdays, and secretly release all episodes online).
6. this was also the plan for the current season, but the leaks upset the advertisers nickelodeon may have worked out deals with, so they made a strong push for television with episodes 4-7.
7. now that korra really has nothing to offer nickelodeon, they could be looking to cut the budget on the final season and test out some sort of online streaming solution using what remaining fanbase the show has.

I didn't know anything about a scrapped toy deal. That might have tipped Nickelodeon's hand. I want to learn more about this; got any sources?

i don't know anything about it either. i know that when other action shows went belly up despite decent or good ratings, it was largely related to toy deals being unable to happen. and sometimes it's related to the demographics tuning in. i think part of the 'problem' [feel free to insert as many quotation marks there as you deem necessary] with young justice is that it appealed to girls and they were perceived as ones not to buy a lot of action toys. sym-bionic titan may have skewed too old for their target demographic (although i am dumbfounded that no one wanted to make toys based on transforming robots). thundercats had a really messy rollout with its toy line in conjunction with the show's release. apparently hasbro forced out my little pony series creator lauren faust because she wanted the show to be more about characters and stories and hasbro wanted a vehicle to sell toys.

things really haven't changed since the 70s and 80s. although i guess 90s nickelodeon and 90s cartoon network really did something different with making cartoons for cartoons sake. although really, they were just trying to gain an audience with original programming. i think once rugrats took off in the late 90s and spongebob became huge, the ideals of the previous decades returned.

so yeah, just massive guesswork on my part based on other pretty recent happenings.

Only just saw the news about this an hour ago and have been reading through and digesting it. Obviously this really sucks and I feel bad for the creators. Can't imagine what it's like for them. Hopefully there's at least a kernel of good news that will come out at Comic-Con. I hope the show is not limited to Amazon Prime or the iTunes season pass thing. I've been watching Korra through DVR and while this season has been an improvement, I don't want to have to pay for yet another streaming service on top of Netflix and Crunchyroll.

Update from Michael Dante DiMartino
At least some info on the latest state of Book 4, just wonder how much they have left to do regarding the animation and got to love that last line

Hey everyone! I appreciate all the support for the show and share your frustration. But the good news is, you will be able to see the rest of Book 3 of Korra, I just don't know all the details yet. And there is most definitely a Book 4. All the pre-production is done and Studio Mir is hard at work on the animation. So this was a disappointing development for sure but as long as you all are able to see the show in some capacity, I'm grateful. And honestly, you're all watching it online anyway, right?

Seeing how this played out we won't see anything Avatar again from Nick I guess. With Korra gone I bid my farewell to Nick, probably won't ever turn the channel to it again.

Their handling of Korra was just horrid but who handles non-episodic cartoons well these days. Sucks but all I can do is hope that S4 doesn't have a huge drop in quality and ride it out until it's done. Fuck this.

Only Adventure Time is treated well in that respect, mostly because it found that sweet spot between episodic content and simple 10 minutes adventures every week.

Anyway, I'm here at Comic-Con. The Nick Booth decorations are devoid of Korra for the most part (she makes an appearance in the banner, and that's it), but just to show how stupid the old advertising model for cartoon networks is, most of the people going to the booth are Avatar fans, buying its merchandise (they have a replica of the Kataang family portrait from the show and plush toys) and a lot of the giveaways during the days are for Korra freebies. And yet, what appears to be happening is that advertisers and merchandizers aren't hooked on Korra (just like they weren't that big on ATLA), despite its huge fanbase.

Nick and Cartoon Network still depend too much on selling cereals and toys to children, and while more and more adults are open to watching animation, Nick and Cartoon Network aren't able to provide quality animation for them while still dependent on the old ratings model, and HBO, AMC and others in cable aren't doing animation anyway...sigh.

Online probably is the only true home for quality non-adult exclusive animated shows.

Does watching something without a Nielson box even do anything to the ratings? I've been trying to make time to watch the show live, sometimes succeeding, mostly failing, and what non-contribution I'm contributing is probably doing nothing in the first place, not that it would've made a difference if I did have a Nielson box.

I don't actually know for sure, but the prevalence of digital cable boxes may track that info. They seem to know when people DVR things.

"Wait until it's licenced or import the physical release."

I hate that, too.

I think that model died for me about ten years ago. Just look at this shit.

Split seasons, second half of season 2 not available yet and NO BLURAY. On TV nick airs it at shitty times (if at all), I have to watch annoying TV ads and the voice acting is generally hit-or-miss. Not to mention that I don't always have time when LOK is on air and can't record the episodes with my TV since I cheaped out a bit (I generally don't watch TV at all, exception are football games)

We live in 2014 and every child learns english in school - I don't see a reason why nick can't just upload the english episodes world-wide on release. Fuck. This. Shit.

I know, I know, that is just the reality of the blockheads that people that lead this company. It's the reason region lock still exists.

It has to die and everything should be sold internationaly.

I hope netflix buys the streaming rights again? Netflix launches September here in Germany (took them long enough) and Legend of Korra would definitively push me towards that $8 per month (or whatever they'll want in Germany)

Things like that exist for marketing reasons. Different countries, cultures, products, etc.

Good luck if your show has a headbutt in it too, you'll never see it in the UK.

So I haven't really been in the loop the past day or two.

What in the shit is Nick doing with this show? Christ.

Edit: Just looked at Nick's schedule; they really have jackshit going for them anymore, huh?

What's he mean by his last comment? Most people are watching it through less than legitimate ways (Piratebay, streaming, etc) or that hes hoping that we'll all go and watch it online once that happens?

We'll see. I am looking forward to it, too. Hoping for some anime.

Headbutt? What is the problem with headbutts? Are we talking actual butts on heads.

And as I said, I think it's dumb. You can see at the amount of piracy that people are interested in the products, even when nobody advertise it in the respective land. Look at how Australia pirated Game of Thrones.

Well they still have Spongebob going for them but once that dies they are pretty screwed
I vaguely remember reading an article that said Spongebob accounts for about 40-50% of its programming

A bit of both i'm guessing since it was doing really well online last season through legal means(nick and Itunes etc) but this Book so far once its aired there's really no legal way to catch it again

I was finally enjoying this Korra season after the build of season 1 and the disappointment of season 3. This season seemed like they got their groove back.

Hopefully the season comes on and its good and forces Nick to show on tv. Maybe the show becomes a bit too violent? Hence the decision by Nick.

?_? :(

Yeah for some reason in the UK headbutts are like worse than the F-Word. It's super violent to them or something.

Look how butthurt New Zealand gets when LotR wanted to film other places, and when they want people from other countries to work there.

It's all about keeping your stuff local. Local disturbers have to buy the rights, and then make the money off their countries viewer, not send the money over seas.

Does newer Spongebob even do very well ratings-wise? The show has really sucked since... Season 4? And that was 8-9 years ago. I mean, I know they do re-runs, but does that really keep them afloat?

From the depths of my brain....didn't they censor Star Wars Episode 2 in the UK? Obi-Wan vs Jango Fatt?

Reminds me on Canadas weird cencoring of the word "loser" in My Little Pony. That actually made the moments worse because kids assumed that there were a far stronger word involved.

But filming doesn't have to do much with distribution, yes.

People should just try to release something everywhere at once.

Yeah it still it does pretty well ratings wise even though quality has taken quite a dive, new episodes still get 3 - 4 million viewers and according to this article from back in October

Meanwhile, Nickelodeon squeezed SpongeBob SquarePants which now accounts for 45% of the channel’s programming hours, up from 25% in January 2012.

Which is insane that almost half of nicks programming time is given to spongebob now

Here's my (completely unsubstantiated) guess at timeline:

1. CN jettisons its staff, who were responsible for its abysmal scheduling.
2. Looking for work and using good ol' industry nepotism, these guys show up at Nick.
3. This happens.

Wait, Germany? I'm always amazed you guys synchronize your shows, like everything. But it's been that way for like ever? In Holland more and more animated series and kids shows get synchronized as well. It's terrible. You'll hear the same Dutch voices over and over again. I miss eighties and nineties tv. Good old tv with Dutch subtitles. I learned English because of that. Sigh.

Korra going digital sucks though. We are they shitting up all of the cartoons I like :( Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Young Justice and now Korra... kids shows these days can't catch a break if they feature a season long plot >:(

WOW. Action/Dramatic Animation on Western TV just can't catch a fucking break :(

Fuck this shit :(

Hey now, TMNT 2012 is an excellent show and deserves your attention. Though yeah, aside from that, Korra and the occasional Full House, Family Matters, etc. rerun there isn't much reason to tune into the channel :/

And honestly, you're all watching it online anyway, right?

Er kinda, considering I live in the UK. <_< >_>

But yeah I might be unable to watch the rest of Book 3 and Book 4 if they go digital only and just when it was getting good too. ;_;

I blame Korra, it's always her fault.

The worse part is that Nick is ducking cheap to put Subtitles for the hearing impaired, and I wasn't going to buy the box set without subtitles so I never did.

Honestly I would import the US version but I don't know if they have subtitles, I just want to watch Aang saving the world again.

I've basically lost all faith in Nick recently. We're at a point where they can only make like one successful show every four years or so.

Pretty sure my copies (US) have subtitles.

I'll double-check for you.

Got to the recap episode in season 3 of ATLA. I don't think I'd be exaggerating if I said this is easily the best recap episode I've ever seen. At this point in my original watch through I was a bit angry on the creators decision to push off katara and aang as being honest about their feelings for the sake of the finale, but I guess it does go well with kataras needs to put everybody else's needs in front of her own. Which is a bit hypocritical considering that she's done plenty of selfish things, even when she wanted to help. Also the episode she hunts down her mom's kidnapper with zuko is hilarious when she snaps at aang and doesn't even have the decency to apologize even though he knows about loss WAAAAY more than you do.

At this point I'm sure my friend has enjoyed this more than korra. Now he knows how Bolin is simply sokka 2.0. And not even as good as sokka.

I just spent the last hour writing four massive posts, trying to translate how I feel about this whole situation in to words, with each one being more incomprehensible than the last. So many things I want to say
(Run Bryke, and never return to Nick. Avatar and American action animation is dead; hope Nick is next. The American animation/TV/ entertainment industry is broken beyond repair...)
, but all these intense emotions are making it almost impossible to string sentences together. I guess none of it really matters, cause it won't change a thing. No sense in dwelling on how incompetent/myopic Nick is; screwing stuff up, it's what they do (not that Disney or CN are any better). As Mike wrote, we should be grateful that we are going to see the entirety of Korra's legend. That's more than can be said for a lot of great recent animated action shows
Pours one out for YJ
.

But Nick can still go fuck itself.

PREDICTION

Book 3 will have a immense ending which leaves you begging for more, ala ATLA book 2.

Book 4 gets cancelled by Nick. We are left forever wanting more.

The scars of the young justice cancellation only just healed :(
