First Look at Halo: Nightfall

I'm still depressed over the Neil Blomkamp fallout.
Can you even imagine how awesome that would have been :(
After Elysium...I'm not quite as torn up about it. And honestly, Neil has such a gritty, grimey, handheld camera style, which is cool, but I don't think I would've wanted a $150 million Halo Movie in that style.

Joseph Kosinski's Oblivion and the cinematography by Claudio Miranda are far more suited for the look and feel of a big budget Halo movie.Slow, wide landscape shots. Cleaner Sci-Fi aesthetic rather than a guerilla style cam.

Yeah, Oblivion was stunning. I want Halo similar to that now!

It does look higher budget, but I believe I read last week it was 10 mil, same as FUD... Am I mistaken? Can't remember the article..

COMIC SPOILERS

Wait, isn't Didact hiding on 04-A?

No. Well, not likely.

(MAJOR ESCALATION SPOILERS)

It was Installation 03 in the latest issue (ie the one that appeared in Halo 4).

Spartan Blue Team found a portal where the composer used to be held on the ring.

The last shot is a monitor(in which looks like a forerunner city) informing Didact that the humans have found the portal(which one can assume leads to said city/planet).

Escalation is Canon?

Honestly if didn't know it was a Halo tie-in

It looks like fairly low budget sci-fi movies.

Haha well.. Story is easily the worst part in Halo, this looks just plain stupid.. And i LOVE sci fi
Looks like a direct to tv low budget movie

Are people serious when they think this looks good?

The lore of Halo is absolutely fantastic. If you bother to read any of the extended stuff that is.

Also it looks pretty good to me. It is just a teaser remember. Not like they're going or blow out all their best shots on this.

Frankie did say that this is very early stuff as well.

Well perhaps the extended stuff is good.. But when the main storylines in the games are more or less dogshit why would one bother?

I would not read extended duke nukem novels either for the same reason

The main plots aren't bad by any means. Just not particularly fleshed out. They're actually pretty good as far as video games go.

Awesome, this guy not long ago performed at the theatre I work at in London. Eric Kofi Abrefa is his name. Good English actor!

Really liking the look of this series. Got a good Ridley Scott Promotheus look to it.

I'm not trying to get off-topic, but I agree with you. Wasn't feeling it like District 9.

Ewww. This might be one of the worse officially sanctioned production pictures I've ever seen.

It's looks so horribly flat, like a scene from a 'US section' of an early Power Rangers episode or some zero budget, fan made Youtube series.

The rest of it looks interesting.

Definitely looks interesting. I enjoyed FuD so hopefully this is at least as good. I wonder what will be on the ring fragment; leftover covenant, flood or something else?

The difference is that the Halo lore and extended universe is actually pretty well thought out. They purposely kind of dumb it down for the games because the gameplay is the more important part there. They get really down in to the details with the extended stuff since that's why you're there. To learn more about the universe. If you like Halo but are ignoring the extended universe, you're missing out on a lot.

Remember Frankie has said this is very early footage and no colour correction or vfx has been applied yet.

We finished shooting two weeks ago, so that was made for comic con, in a hurry, without any vfx or final color correction.

Not an excuse or a mea culpa, more of a, "and that's pre pre alpha..."

That older marine looks straight-up like Marty O'Donnell.

Most of the time I see people complain about tumblr it's because they perceive it as a site for hipsters and / or people with intersectional anti-oppression politics. So... I really have no idea what you might be getting at here, lol.

You poor soul.

It would seem that 343i are still determined to continually inch the Halo series away from its elegant and whimsical sci-fi status and instead opt to take it even further down the path of gritty, militaristic, humanitarian drama.

For a series which built itself upon the symbolic struggle of humanity trying to find its place within a universe which rejects it, I cannot help but wonder if 343i have forgotten what Halo really is.

I... What... Huh?

Why else has 343 released that has even been slightly like what you described?

Halo 4 certainly wasn't like that. And from the very little we've seen on 5 it also won't be "gritty" or "militaristic"

I felt Halo 4 was exactly that. Spartan Palmer was a character that seemingly existed to dictate random military jargon and bully scientists. The Spartan IV's themselves also certainly lacked the charm of Halo's marines or the nobility of the ODST.

Forward Unto Dawn also featured yet another 'human story', one that played little to no relevance to the overall universe.

Just watched the clip. I'm surprised at how mad I am. The only Halo esq thing they have is the short sound clip at the end. Take away that, the guns, and the name halo out of the trailer and show it to somebody and I doubt they will say its Halo related. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody mistook this for a new direct to tv sequel for starship troopers. Why is it so hard to make something like they did with the reach trailers. Those were awesome. I wanted to see full movies made like that.

I don't want to bust out my Halo resume, but I feel like this isn't marketed or made for me. An old school 'Combat Evolved' fan. I want to be pumped for a cool Halo. I want to be on the hype train, but seeing this just makes me groan. Hopefully Microsoft hasn't forgotten about me, because I have three hundred bucks to spend in order to get on the hype train.

Combat Evolved was a happy accident spurred out of a lower budget and extensive crunch-timing. If you want an idea on how Halo was "supposed" to turn out, try Halo Reach. Aside from ports you're never getting something to scratch that classic Combat Evolved itch.

Reach is my second favorite next to CE.
