SDCC2014 | Nintendo Challenge: Live @ SDCC & Smash 3DS Tournament

I would like to imagine the tourney format would be more prone to change after the game has been released. Right now they gotta market the game to everyone which is completely understandable.

Once the full game's out, if Nintendo still keeps supporting the scene, hopefully the format and tourney ruleset/stagelist etc will be open to adjustments.

Since they're going to be run by NOA, they probably will IMO.

Honestly I think it has more to do with it being an early build than anything else

Well, I'm hoping this is the case.

It is kind of ridiculous to be surviving Smash Attacks at +150% with nothing to break your launch.

Rosalina also has REALLY bad throws. Jesus.

You guys probably didn't see it but in my latest round I got fed up with all the Bowser bring played at went back to DK.

It was me vs 2 Bowsers and Kirby. 6 min for stock. It came down to me and Bowser with 1 stock each. He got me. It was pretty exciting. I basically suicided twice though. I felt like I had it in the bag.

In a stock setting people play so so so much differently. One of you said that earlier the first DK didn't know how to play. That was me and I so wish you saw that last one!

I had more points and KOs than the winner too! But it's all good! When the game comes out watch out for Romancedawn!

I wouldn't say that, Lucina is meant to be a quick character so that makes sense anyway, sheik and ZSS have low landing lag as well, so I wouldn't consider it to be an indication of what the game is like, pacman also had significant lag on a few of his moves from what I remember.

But bowser had massive lag on his fair in the Falcon trailer, so it doesn't seem like it's been a general change yet.

Maybe some moves are just meant to be unsafe?

I obviously haven't played it so I don't know but if some moves come with lag then that doesn't sound too bad.. It just means those are situational moves Ala some moves in street fighter and games like that.

I'm fine with some moves being unsafe, it's just that 90% of the time the reward you get for doing them is never worth the risk.

And less landing lag in general just allows for a more interesting combo game, which is what I want to see most.

Depends how the game turns out.

Nintendo are probably going to continue doing a couple of tournaments, but if the game turns out shit you won't be really seeing these types of people at them because it would be dropped, this apparently official Nintendo tournament format isn't something that would go down well with the scene in a proper tournament either.

I believe so. NoA really cares about getting the community to accept the game. D1, who commentated at E3, and others continue to work with Nintendo in growing the scene.

Even if Sakurai makes no concessions and the competitive scene doesn't fully buy into the game as a successor to Melee, I think enough of the community likes being associated with Nintendo and will commit to playing SSB4. And if Nintendo sees good stream numbers like at E3, then they'll continue to support it.

so there is a better chance that the community just continues to play Melee
got it

as long as Nintendo is more supportive I'm fine with it

Was that you with the Final Smash on Spirit Tracks?

I am sure that has more to do with more wonky damage output and weird death zones.

Easy to fix with balancing which I am guessing is happening now

The difference is that in SF most of your moves are safe (normals in particular) but on this build just about all moves are unsafe. Consider for a sec that in other fighters (and melee) that blocking can put you into a disadvantaged state while in this build and brawl it was pretty much always putting the blocker at an advantaged state

Kirby's throw killed someone without breaking 100% didn't it?

I recall someone saying Kirby's throws were lethal in this if I'm not mistaken.

But yeah, a lot of things seem all over the place. I think people gravitated towards Bowser because of his, weight, speed, recovery, and reach. It seems to be pretty easy to identify his kill moves unlike the other characters--so he's a smart pick if you're not going to have a lot of time with the game.

I'm just going to pin this on the fact that they're using a pre-E3 build.

I mean, yes, it's expected that some moves aren't supposed to be 100% safe but a lot of moves that you'd expect to not have a crap ton of landing lag actually do. Sonic's back air, for example, looks like it has even slightly more landing lag than it did in Brawl (which it already had a good amount of landing lag to be punishable on whiff and shields). It just makes for a less offensive game because you have less offensive options to work with for many characters.

That's why Meta Knight was super popular and successful in Brawl because he could play both offensive and defensive. He had both options because 99% of his moves were quick and had no landing lag/barely any endlag -- allowing him to get away with a lot, even "combo" to some extent (in a game where no other character can actually combo), and control the pace of the match. On top of that, he had several stupid moves (tornado being one of the major ones).

Sheik is looking a lot like Meta Knight with the amount of options she has compared to other characters at the moment. Of course, that can change but I won't be surprised (if everyone else stays the same) if she and characters like her (such as ZSS) are the most popular character choice early on in the metagame.

Hopefully the game does change by the time it releases but I'm not holding my breath -- there's been no precedent that Sakurai or his development team will listen to outside feedback from people pre-release.

Edit: Also, I'm glad swimming is gone.

Bowser definitely seems to be newbie friendly for FFA, which is why we've seen success. Still don't know how he'll fare when played competitively.
