I think the most important thing to figuring out what is in Phase 3 is knowing whether Avengers 3 will be in May 2018 or 2019. A lot of us originally had it pinned in the 2019 date, but Feige saying that they want a new Avengers movie every three years seems to point towards it being in May 2018 which just made Phase 3 shorter by three movies.

I think it's definitely 2018. 2019 makes no sense. Phase 1 contained 6 movies including Avengers. Phase 2 will contain 5 movies including Avengers 2. Phase 3 being 7 movies makes much more sense than it suddenly being 10 movies.

Phase 3 of the MCU:

July 17, 2015: Ant-Man
May 6, 2016: Captain America 3
July 8, 2016: Doctor Strange
May 5, 2017: ??????
July 28, 2017: Guardians of the Galaxy 2
November 3, 2017: ??????
May 4, 2018: ??????
July 6, 2018: ??????
November 2, 2018: ??????
May 3, 2019: ??????

This is our list of confirmed movies so far. Nothings set in stone for Dr. Strange yet, but I think the consensus here is that it will probably be the other 2016 movie so I just decided to toss it in there.

Given that Thor 3 is a no-brainer, that leaves only one "unknown". Iron Man 4 is obvious from a business perspective so if they can renegotiate a deal with RDJ before then I can definitely see it happening. Otherwise if I was a betting man, I'd say the last film would either be Nova or Captain Marvel with either film being used to flesh out the cosmic side of the MCU started by GotG.

What you're not considering is that even if it is in 2018, Avengers 3 may still not be that first May date. I could easily see them slotting it as the July 6th movie too, which would give them an extra movie in the "phase". I do personally strongly share the belief that a second cosmic film apart from GotG 2 will be in this next phase, and I agree that Nova is the most likely choice.

EDIT:

And a second theory...Some people have speculated that if Avengers 3 is in fact an adaptation of The Infinity Gauntlet story it would be too large a tale to tell in a single film considering all of the characters involved. Speculation further would lead to a split into two movies (effectively both Avengers 3 and 4, but telling one story). If this is the case and the first movie is that November 2018 date, with the final part being May 2019, it would still fulfill "Avengers 3 years from now (2018)" while simultaneously putting it at the end of this new string of mystery movies. All it would mean is that 2 of the 10 are Avengers films. I think this possibility should be considered.

I completely forgot about Inhumans, but with Feige seemingly enthusiastic about it I wouldn't be surprised if that ends up being one of the movies in those mystery dates.

Right. I think the reasoning with Avengers 3 in 2019 was that it would allow Marvel to build as many new franchises as possible in order to strengthen Phase 4 should actors leave. (RDJ, Evans)

The first weekend of May is one of the most coveted weeks of the whole year for blockbuster movies. I think a November or July release date for an Avengers movie is highly unlikely. Besides, the actors are only signed up until Avengers 3 and their contracts might not allow Marvel to release one gigantic movie in two parts.

if they want to build many new franchise, they should do it after Phase 3, the last thing I want is for them to cram like 20 characters in a single movie, even now I'm a bit wary about Avengers 2 having too many cast despite Avengers 1 and Whedon reputation of managing large characters.

also, imo the safe way to build new franchise now is to introduce characters to current solo franchise, like maybe Winter Soldier and Black Widow solo film after being introduced in Cap 2. isn't there rumor about solo Rocket Racoon movie too if GoTG is successful? for example, make Captain America 3 about going to Wakanda repairing his shield if that AoE footage of cap shield broken is true. they can add Black Phanter there, and in phase 4, make a solo Black Phanter movie.

look at this swag Mr Stark in the middle. lol

It would be worth it. Take a bullet for the team.

We obviously now know between DC and Marvel who has the more dedicated fans.

I just means DC has more lax security.

Also it's kind of hard to be worth it when they throw you out WHILE filming. Theyre not going to be nice and wait for you to finish.

I know but Avengers is large enough a franchise to make insane bank no matter where you launch it. That 4th of July weekend is still a huge blockbuster money maker. If it was split between two movies, with the first part in November 2018, the second part would still get that first weekend of May spot the following year. Additionally, all of the actors have multi-film deals. RDJ's specifically ends with Avengers 3 (assuming IM4 does not happen beforehand). If splitting the story into two movies would require a new contract...they can always solve that "problem" by having Iron Man die in the first part and not show up in the second. That said, if RDJ is game for IM4 then a new contract is likely to happen anyways.

All I'm saying is there are a few possibilities here. Provided Avengers 3 indeed releases "3 years from now" (2018) it can fall on any of the three 2018 dates.

Even though he probably has no idea what he's doing and why everyone's excited, Brolin walking on stage with the infinity gauntlet is still pretty cool.

He's probably more aware than you think. He has kids. He's probably well aware that Thanos is a pretty major villain in the MCU as I'm sure his contract probably specifies a number of movies. He's probably also been told a rough plan for what his character will be in the MCU.

Why are you assuming that he doesn't know anything about the character he's playing or why people would be excited to see him with the gauntlet?

Comic-Con peeps! They're showing Age of Ultron footage at The Hard Rock hotel. I will be grateful if someone posted said footage.

Yeah. Some of the actors read the comics like Hemsworth implied in regards to Thor, so I'm sure Brolin did the same.

Oh god, the Ultron description sounds haunting...too badwe already know we'll likely see everyone live at the end obviously.

Hmm that avengers 3&4 being part of the same story makes sense.

I'd like to have another Punisher movie though. That'd be sweet. I wouldn't mind if he wasn't part of the MCU.

Once again, this projection puts it as just a single new franchise in Phase 3, with the others all being Phase 1 sequels and one Phase 2 sequel. I originally assumed the 2019 one would be Avengers 3 to both give Whedon a break if they want him back and also to provide more buildup, since the whole MCU so far has been building to Avengers 3.
Ant-Man and Doctor Strange are two new properties.
