Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread XI: Where 90% correct equals 100% wrong

Aint nothin special about cheap transparent plastic glued onto a cardboard backer with PR art printed on it. Crack that baby open, put the figure on yer shelf.

Have Pac-Man's costumes/alts been discussed before? I know people mentioned Ms. Pac-Man as a possibility, but what else might there be...

Anyone think we'll get one of the shitty new versions of the character? That would be pretty hilarious, lol.

Anyone else think it's slightly strange to have a stage that features areas from both Sticker Star and The Thousand Year Door? I mean, they are both Paper Mario titles, and their art is fairly similar, but the two games are so very different. Sticker Star is practically defined by how far removed it is from the rest of the series.

Maybe it's just me.

Also, other note.

While two of these stages alter in some way (by either transformation or scrolling), the homogenous visuals of three of the 3DS Mario stages is pretty boring.

Blah. Golden Plains (the middle one) is probably the most visually bland Smash stage in some time. I think, if they wanted a New Super Mario Bros. 2 stage, they should have based its visuals on the cannon stages, the only interesting new visuals that the game had.

Oh well. That's what they get for trying to have every Mario game copy the same NSMB art style I guess.

I doubt it will be usable inside the packaging

Depends how strong the nfc is I guess, you can use Skylanders in the package, but not Disney Infinity because their base has shapes for them to fit in.

Would be a pain though, now that I think about it.

Only Pac-Man alt I want:

That's a shame. A lot more to Mario stages than green plains.

And also
constant damage

An item that powers you up but also
deals constant damage (why is this a spoiler)
until you throw it away is a pretty interesting idea for an item.

We really didn't need a 3Dland and a NSMB2 stage, it should have been one of them and a GB Mario level.

It'll likely be Miss Pac-man (they can keep the same sound effects for the "voice"), but I'd love to see New Pac-man just to see the fan rage (I really don't have a big problem with the design)

I remember when we were discussing Pac-Man before he was revealed and people thought "What if Namco forces Sakurai to use the new design?" Maybe it being an alt was a compromise.

I mean what's so fancy here, really. That it can glow and grow a beam-sword extension? Is that really enough to differentiate an entire different fighting style?

Absolutely. It can do more than just grow, as there are several Monado skills from Xenoblade. Such as:

Monado Shield

Monado Speed

Monado Enchant

Monado Purge

(I couldn't find an image, but it's essentially a projectile attack)

Monado Cyclone

All of that, plus the ability to the see the future (which could potentially work as a counter move of sorts), his natural skillset (EG: Stream Edge) and some Monado skills I didn't bother listing (like Monado Armor, Eater) are more than enough to give him a Smash moveset. You can't justify comparing him to Chrom (who lacked any unique skills in FE:A)

Hey GAF,

The only characters in this picture that aren't announced yet are:

Mr. Game and Watch
Isabelle
Tom Nook
Toad
NES Mario

(And until a couple weeks ago, Lucina)

Food for thought :)

Isabelle is an assist trophy. Tom Nook is in villager's final smash. Toad it peach's side B. NES Mario is Mario and not a different person. Game and watch was in Pac-man's trailer and is still oddly not revealed on the website.

I would imagine their Amiibo line is trying to kind of encompass all of Nintendo, which Smash happens to also do.

But if 8-bit mario is in Smash then you called it first.

My man, justified Shulk's variety that he brings to the table.

But Isabelle is an AT and Nook is in Villaher's Final Smash. And Toad is a Peach move.

It always makes me feel bad/agitated/somewhat sad when a good number of people say "no more swordsmen" when doing new character inclusions between Smash versions and I think I finally know why.

I naturally love using sword characters in fighting games. Zoning with long reach normals or cutting through with dramatic arcs never gets tiring for me. Even more so when people get really creative and do things like independently/remotely controlled swords (Donovan in the Darkstalkers series, Valentine in Guilty Gear Xrd) or other such variants. There are only a few non blade using characters through my years of playing games that I enjoy using and being a part of a fandom for a game series that knee jerk reacts negatively towards sword and blade characters is frustrating at times. :lol

My guesses: Toad for Captain Toad, NES Mario for Mario Maker, Isabelle and Tom Nook for an unpcoming Animal Crossing Wii U game, Mr. G&W for Smash.

I think it would have been cool for the Paper Mario stage to have four transformations, one representing each game of the series (it still could, but I doubt it; I think Sakurai would have said "there are other transformations, too" in his caption if there were.)

And I agree about the blandness. One grassland stage would be plenty; I see no reason for three. I think the Sticker Star stage should have been the ski lift area instead.

Tom Nook has already been announced

Speaking of Amiibos, I had a thought. In the Digital Presentation, Reggie said something about Disney Infinity figurines having exclusive Amiibo functionality on the Wii U. That made me think about potential 3rd party characters being used in the game. Maybe ATs? Or even, imagine this, certain Amiibos would have the code and data to work like a custom Mii Fighter. They could have one of the three movesets and the proportions could be like a Mii, but they wouldn't be strictly limited to Mii designs much like the NPCs of the Mii Plaza games on 3DS.

Just a random idea I'm throwing out there.

Honestly the only one I can see myself getting is Samus (the rest don't look very good up close)

They better not freakn' mess up the Lucina, Ness and
Lucas
amiibos...

Animal Crossing New Leaf // Animal Crossing WiiU?
Mario Maker
Game and Watch Gallery
Unnanounced new 3D Mario game we already know is in development

Not even joking

Yeah, I'm surprised they didn't spring for Mario&Luigi DT stage, if nothing else than to give a little variety to the selection. Personally, I could do without the 3D Land stage.

I'm just glad Paper Mario's getting some love finally.

It is possible you might be able to use an amiibo through the box, depending on how close it needs to be to the receiver.
That's what I was thinking. It definitely works with Skylanders.

Thanks for the pictures btw guys. I'm leaning towards opening, since the boxes look so bulky. That would let me display them all closer together, more neatly. I'm sure opening decreases the value and such, but I doubt I'd sell anyway. The main point of getting them is to collect figurines, so even if you can't use them from in the package, it's still more a matter of how they display. Unless the boxes get a fair bit smaller I can't see myself having the room for 'em.

I doubt there will be an AC for Wii U. New Leaf is only a year old, and given the way the Wii U is performing, I bet they'll just wait for the next console.

Fortunately Earthbound characters sort of lend themselves to figures as they have pretty simplistic designs, so I'm expecting Ness and hopefully Lucas to look pretty good.
