As mentioned in the chat, I think it would have to be Wario and Ganon, who are universally popular characters, both in Smash and outside of it. I would argue cutting Mewtwo generated about as much buzz as cutting either of those 2 would create, maybe even more than if Wario were cut.
There's several characters that are really only "popular" to Smashers (Falco, ICs, G&W, Ness and Jiggs in particular, though I guess Meta Knight too), while other characters people seem to expect to be cut (Snake, ROB, Squirtle, Ivysaur, Wolf, Falco, Jigglypuff and Lucas all seem to be popularly mentioned as people that will/should be cut).
Except for Snake and the 2 PT Pokemon, who seem to be expected to not make it, none are particularly popular outside of Smash, so their removal would likely cause less cause for outrage than Wario, Ganondorf or Mewtwo.

In order of meltdowns:
1. Ness: Earthbound fans are passionate and Smash is all they have anymore. Plus, it would cause a shitstorm over the 'original 12' safety net theory being blown wide open for everyone else.
2. Falco: Beloved veteran from Melee with a lot of history in the game. I can definitely see tons of sour grapes over this.
3. Ganondorf: There's only so many villains in Smash, and I can see people complaining loudly about how Zelda is getting screwed when FE has four characters or something.
4. Jigglypuff: We are many.
5. Lucas: See above, but I don't think it'd sting quite as much if Ness were still in.

In other delicious news, the 3DS selection of stages is looking great so far! Still many franchise holes that need filling, though.
Hmmm, I'm not expecting a great many more new stages at the moment. I wonder how many classics will be available. Great Fox Melee would be pretty cool since Wii U has a new one.

I would love to see every franchise would have their own stages, along with few non-representative franchise getting stages as well like Duck Hunt Pond and Venus/Mars Lighthouse

Probably Ness and Jigglypuff since they have been around since the N64 days and have been in every game since.
Though honestly I don't think they will get cut.

This so much. Honestly though, I'm at the point where I just want to cling to our reps. If they give me Ness and Lucas back I'll be incredibly happy with this iteration of the game. I'm just terrified we're losing Lucas, which really sucks.

I can't imagine not having Ness in Smash after the EarthBound VC release though. I'm a bit more worried about Lucas.

I think someone like Jeff, or maybe one of the Mother 3 crew, would be better than Paula or Poo as they have the best opportunity to truly differentiate their moveset from Ness or Lucas.
edit: by the way, if any of you Ness players want to play, message me some time and we will set it up! Would love to check out any Ness's. Actually, anyone from Neogaf who still plays Brawl online hit me up. Would be cool to see how good people are on here. I am lame and play tourney rules though =(

Earthbound has you fighting snakes early on, they're pretty solid...
Ness's party has a lot of equippable gear, much of it made from various metals.
One of the things that has made me laugh harder than anything was in Mother 3. The first enemy you fight is a bat and this is the song it plays.

I hate that they chose Windy Hill for the WiiU version. It's like an advertisement for a game that'll be almost a year old that didn't even turn out to be that great.
Really would have rather seen another Genesis stage or something from a better received Nintendo Sonic.

He'd need a new model, animation tweaks, balancing, custom moves/attributes, and an Amiibo figure. There's not enough time and resources to implement every single veteran.
Fire Emblem Awakening was released worldwide and is much more popular than Mother 3.

I'd actually really like to see something like Final Zone, Death Egg, Flying Battery or Launch Base. Something Sonic but with a "Robotnik's Base" theme where badniks and Robotnik in various "Boss Vehicles" could be a stage hazard.
That might be too close to Wily's Castle territory, though?

I think I was the only person who thought it was a good call to remove mewtwo. Not out of some weird spite, I just didn't think he fit. In the movies, Mewtwo was an untouchable god-like character. To have someone like jigglypuff or luigi fighting on par with him feels like a disservice to his character IMO.
That said I'll be glad if he returns just cos so many people want him back.

So, I talked with some of the moderators at Smashboards; I'm not sure about the cut veterans and some of the other newcomers like Ridley, but apparently the few people who've come forward on info with Duck Hunt Dog and Koopa Clown Car Koopaling (my term) predicted some unique palette swaps a month ago that were confirmed via the latest demos. Still not sure I believe this but hoo boy would it be funny if true.
I dont think theres not enough time/resources.
They already wasted a lot of time setting up that demo and a lot of money on things like the invitational.
If something is cut for time reasons, like mewtwo was from brawl, I blame the demo.

lol Duck Hunt Dog would be such a troll character. It'd be a weird decision but I wouldn't say no. I love me some Duck Hunt. Still pretty much flabbergasted there was never a reboot of Duck Hunt on the Wii (unless you count that Wii Play minigame).
