Quick question, should I get either 280x Direct CU II or Windforce rev2 as a cooling solution?
They both seem to be fairly equal and loud (31db @ idle?) but having been accustomed to my dust filled 560Ti atm, I can deal with it.

Yes, either are good. You have to keep in mind testing procedures for measuring noise. They're both really quiet.
So I'm downloading firmware updates for my Asus Z97 A mobo for the first time, do I have to unzip the files?
Do you mean drivers? Or BIOS update?

For the former, yes.

Both I think, I just went to the site and downloaded all the updated files that they had
BIOS updates are done by putting the file on a flash drive that is formatted for FAT 32. Boot into BIOS, and use the EZ Flash utility.
I considered it but the low clock speed convinces me that single thread performance will suffer and will ultimately perform worse in a lot of cases.
Yeah, the 5930K and 5820K are looking better for games from the rumors.

The X's have never been a good buy. Being worth it this time around would be a huge break in history.

Finally sat down and spent some time OC'ing my 4690K.

Got a stable 4.4ghz at 1.215 Vcore though it was just 2 hours on OCCT CPU. Didn't want to run extreme length stress tests due to the heat wave in my area at the moment.

I guess I got an average Haswell chip. All I wanted was a moderate overclock, but I was hoping I could hit 4.4ghz at 1.2V or below.

Somewhat dissatisfied with the heat at this voltage. I'm averaging temps in the mid-70's at 1.215V under load in OCCT CPU, though I guess I'm only on an Evo212 cooler with 2 case fans in summer weather. Gaming temps reach high 60's.

Issue I'm currently having (and need some assistance with):
My fans are too loud at idle. How are you supposed to wire your fans with the fan hub that comes with the Enthoo Pro? Right now, I have two things that use the 4th PWM pin: The fan hub, and the CPU fan. The mobo only has a single PWM header: CPU_FAN. And the fan hub only has 3 pin outputs. I just connected the CPU fan to the hub, with the 4th pin not connected to anything. Is that correct? I've set the CPU_FAN header to the "Silent" setting in the BIOS. At idle, and at around 30C temps, my CPU fan is spinning at ~1450 RPM according to HWInfo. Its minimum is ~600. This seems too high. Might I have to get a proper fan hub with PWM outputs?

Edit: Did some more research, unsurprisingly the issue is indeed that I need to connect my 4 pin PWM fan to a 4 pin header, or else you can't control its speed. I assumed that it would simply fall back to the same speed control method that the 3 pin fans use, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Buying a PWM splitter to solve this, hope that's enough.
I was wondering about this, thanks for the feedback. I have almost the same set up shipping to me in the next few days. Guess I will let the case fans run at full blast for now and link the PWM to the CPU fan.

Think this has been asked before but I don't remember a response. Does anyone know when the AMD reward codes expire? I'm hoping they put some new games on there before they do as I already have most of them.

How do you go about choosing a case?

I'm looking for a mid-tower, was originally going for the "Nzxt Gamma Classic Series Atx Mid Tower Interior Steel Chassis" but it's back order. I'd like to better understand how to chose one. I'll be doing mostly rendering, no gaming.

Thanks

Had a little project this weekend, drilled/cut out the 3.5" bay in the Corsair 350D and added a MPCIE wifi card. I had to strip everything out and take my build down to just the bare case. I really enjoy this case, it's a pleasure to work in because you can cram it with a ton of components and still have a lots of room. I need to take a well lighted picture because it looks so clean!

It's really a personal choice. You have to choose what you like, that will fit what you want. I just got my Fractal Define R4 in, and it has room to fit anything I'd want/need, plus it has the added bonus of sound dampening foam on the sides, top and front. But for some people, that isn't important, so they'd get something that's either cheaper or has the extra money put into something else. It's really, totally your call.

Ok just wanted to make sure I didn't end up with any weird surprise.

I need to make sure it's compatible with my Noctua NH-U14S 140mm cooling unit.

edit: I'll be going for the Corsair Carbide Series 300R

Hi,

I just recently put together a new rig for the first time and amazingly everything seems to be working!!! (I'm a little paranoid about how well it's going actually)

So, I need a Windows 8 key. I have the USB ready to go, just shopping around for a key. I remember reading here once someone recommending Reddit resellers? How trustworthy are those keys? Any feedback from someone who has bought from Reddit would be very appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know if this guy still sells them but some in here have used him. I can't personally recommend him as I've never used him but a lot in this thread say he's legit and so are the keys.

Maybe someone else can chime in.

This is his latest rates from most recent "thread". Just PM him what you want and if you are paying with paypal with your email address and he will send you an invoice though 2chechout and pm you instructions back.

Oh man. I just saw that Evolv for the first time and now I need it. Why did you do this to me? haha

Because I'm thinking about downsizing my build to mATX (mostly because I'll need to carry this thing up/down a steep-ass staircase) and just remembered they still haven't released anything smaller than the Pro.

(Now whether I actually do downsize is dependent on either one of the Evolv or Mini XL supporting 280mm radiators.)

Small update on my build.

Getting a PWM splitter (specifically, this one) definitely fixed my CPU fan spinning too fast.

Sadly the case fans on the Enthoo Pro are much louder than I expected at idle. They're still connected to that fan hub (which is still getting a PWM signal from CPU_FAN and power from SATA), so I'm going to try hooking them up to the mobo sys_fan headers instead. If that doesn't fix it either, I might consider getting a couple of PWM fans for the case and a good PWM hub to have all the fans linked to the CPU_FAN header, because I was really hoping for something quieter when idle.

So is the 5930k the true successor to the 3930k? How much better do you think it will be over the 3930k?

Usually just googling the case and cooler will give you someone on some forum wondering the same thing, that's how I figured out my Dark Rock 3 and the R4. Good pick though, from what I've read of it!

guys, i think something might be up with my build.

i have my 4770k at 4.2GHz, and it's idling at 45-49 celsius.

that's a little ridiculous, right?

playing Titanfall will push them to 65-70, but no higher really.

running prime95 small FFT test is pretty much a no go, and if i try bumping voltage down [it's at 1.24 and level 5 LLC right now], i end up getting micro freezing in games, as well as completely fail the blend test in prime95 [ie - BSOD almost straight away]

i'm using an H60i as a cooler [i know, not the best], but it's the 2013 edition which should be performing MUCH better than what i'm seeing in my rig [based on reviews et al].

do i just have a bunk chip?

is my cooler not seated properly?

i actually opted to have NCIX put together my PC this time, specifically to avoid this sort of thing.

*i guess it's important to note than i'm in a non air conditioned home, if that makes any difference

anyway, i'm very, very, very new to this whole OC thing - not trying to push my system to crazy heights, but would definitely like to be able to sit at 4.2 safely.

any feedback on my current temps, and if i need to address them / how to address them would be super appreciated.

Picked up this Asus IPS monitor (the one suggested on the first post) for cheap off ebay, $35 as the original stand was broken (someone ripped it out without unscrewing it). No worries though, it has VESA mounts so now I can do this.

Full-on with tate mode in Ikaruga, didn't realize what I was missing until I tried it.

I have been asking a friend to help me put together my first build, and we (or to be more precise, he, mostly) came up with the following:

Case: Corsair 500R
CPU: Intel i5 4670k
Motherboard: ASRock Z97 Pro 3
RAM: Kingston PC3-12800 CL9 8GB (2x4GB)
Graphic Card: MSI Radeon R9 280
SSD: Crucial MX100 256MB
PSU: Coolmaster RS550-ACAAB-J1
HDD: Western Digital WD20EZRX 2TB

Does this look like something you could work with? I'd appreciate any input!

Doesn't look too bad at all. If you could fill out the questionnaire in the OP (under the Builds section) and post it here, we could get a better idea of what you're wanting to do and suggest any changes that may work better? :)

I still need help with my PC!

Ok, so now I got my PC to stay turned on, fans are spinning, and the LED near the power button is fully displaying blue.

However, I'm not getting any monitor signal and I'm hearing 3 beeps. Like, "beeep" "beep" "beep".

My mobo is the Intel DH55TC. I'm going to try putting back in the GPU again.

3 beeps is a memory error. Try to reseat your RAM and if that doesn't work, try each RAM module one by one until you find the defective module if any.

I reseated all the RAM but I still got beeps. Then I just booted with no ram and no GPU and I'm still getting beeps. Grrrrr.

You need atleast one stick in there if you want to boot. Try the sticks one by one. It sounds like there's a defective module that prevents boot-up.

Thanks for the fast reply!

Budget: I'm based in Japan and would have liked to stick somewhere around 100k Yen. With the build right now, I'm a bit higher than that, but that's not a biggie.

Main Use: Light Gaming (3) , Gaming (5), Emulation (PS2/Wii) (1, if not 0.5), General Usage (Word, Web, 1080p playback) (3.5). Also some Image Manipulation, but that doesn't really change all that much, does it?

Monitor Resolution: I am planning on hooking the build up to my TV for space reasons. I know TVs are shitty monitors, but it will have to do.

List SPECIFIC games or applications that you MUST be able to run well: Is 30FPS acceptable? 60? 120? How important is PhysX / SuperSampling / CUDA to you? This being my first my first custom desktop, I am a complete noob. 60fps would be grand. I am not really a fan of the HUGE AAA titles, but some graphically intense stuff might find its way into my library. I... kinda prefer artsy fartsy games.

When will you build?: A friend who has agreed on helping me set everything up will head back to his country at the end of August, so I would like to get going as soon as possible.

Will you be overclocking?: That friend also told me I won't be overclocking (even though I thought that's pretty much standard...).

Looking for the best monitor in the £100 to £150 range.

Suggestions?

I have the Dell P2314H and absolutely love it. Got mine for £142, but I reckon if you look around you could get it even cheaper.

Pretty much any 23" monitor from a decent brand will do, you just need to make the decision between IPS (better IQ) or TN (faster response). Personally I'd go IPS every time since I can't tell the difference in response time, but you might be different.

Does anyone here know if there's a way to get more recent drivers than 13.4 legacy working for an HD 4870 on Windows 8.1? Some games, namely Wolfenstein, don't work with the legacy drivers, and I'm not buying a new card for my recently-built $100 poverty-spec rig.

I currently have:
CAS: CoolerMaster Elite 430 Mid-Tower
CPU: Intel Core i7-960 3.20 GHz LGA1366
HDD: 1TB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 16MB Cache 7200RPM
MEMORY: 6GB (2GBx3) DDR3/1600MHz Triple Channel Memory Module
MOTHERBOARD: EVGA X58 SLI 3 Intel X58
OS: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit Edition)
POWERSUPPLY: 700 Watts - XtremeGear
VIDEO: EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 570 1.2GB 16X

I am looking to add in another 6GB of RAM, a SSD, upgrade my Video Card (I have about $350 for a new card) and maybe also my PSU if needed.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

Dell U2312HM can be had for similar price too. Its an IPS panel.

Get a good CPU cooler and overclock the CPU first. A new GPU will be good. As for RAM, your X58 platform uses tripple channel so unfortunately its ideally best to get another 3x2GB kit if you can. Luckily they are pretty cheap on ebay, think i sold my 3x2GB kit of Crucial Ballistix for £30...
However remember the more RAM modules the lower the CPU overclock headroom. TBH i think even if you added a 2x2GB kit itll be fine for gaming.

PSU is not the best model from what im reading but cant find the exact specs, looks like this was a prebuilt? From my quick google im wondering how this PSU is still alive, seems like they are very bad units made by Ultra.

SSD is always a good idea, check out the Crucial MX100.
