Thanks for the straight talk. :) My buddy said the same thing about the video card, but I can't tell if the performance difference between that card and one that is $300 is worth me getting slower/less RAM or not getting the SSD. I'll check out that website and use the OP as a guide as you suggested.

You don't want a PC without a SSD. Perhaps you might however entertain the notion of not buying a Socket2011 system, but rather a more than serviceable Socket1150 based system.

Hey guys, I have a question about setting up internet in my new place (right thread?). Comcast is the only provider in my area and since I'll be living with 4 other roommates that year I've chosen to do the 150 Mbps down for $97/Mo. I've looked around for routers and switches (def will need one with 5 people) and these were my best finds:

Router
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=33-320-115

Switch
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=33-320-171

This combination should be able to fully utilize the (at most) 150 Mbps connection. Is there anything glaringly wrong or sub-optimal with my choices? Thanks.

Parents have that router and really like it. Don't have anything to say about the switch, other than unless you're all pretty intense gamers, are you sure they won't be ok with just WiFi? And the router has 4 ethernet ports anyway.

If you have four other room mates you need physical LAN cables so you can yank their connections should you need to.

"You're lagging me, brah, I ain't no punk-ass newb!"

Also make sure the router is in your room, and that you reinforce the door.

I assume one of them has an Xbox or PS or something, and they all have PCs so I need 5+ ports, and 8 seems like a safe amount. WiFi prob works for a few but I want to be prepared if they all want ethernet connections. At least 2 of us game on our PCs and I guess others would just watch Netflix as the most bandwidth intensive activity. It's good to know the router is a good recommendation. Thanks for the help and router confirmation!

Ha, my old roommate was pretty tech-savvy, I have to learn how to MAC-ban from him on the fly. :p

I have the N version of that router. Best one I've owned. I love the firmware. Great range on the wifi.

Update that firmware ASAP though. I've heard the AC one has some maturity issues out of the gate. N one needed a few revisions to get real solid.

Awesome I guess I picked a great router for my first time setting up internet. Also will update, thanks.

Embrace the beauty!

Gross. Those new black ones look OK at least.

Guys is building a computer always the best solution? I found this computer from cyberpower and try to match the specs on pcpartpicker.com and on cyberpower is cheaper than building one..http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/Summer_Gaming_AMD_8-Core

Eww, no to that. If you're worried about building, just order everything from NCIX (they're generally good about price matching if you find something cheaper), and get them to build it for you.

Hey gaf I've been looking at motherboards and I feel the Asus Maximus Hero VII is the one I should get. If anyone owns one I'd appreciate it if you could describe your experience with it.

Really nice spec! >2000? I was thinking of something similar. Can you recommend the heatsink? How was placement inside that case overall?

Calculating it out, I think I spent about $2000 total on the pieces in that list.

Heatsink works great, and the case I got has plenty of room for it. Case is very roomy, cable management was a breeze.

Are all atx power supplies the same dimensions? Do they have their internal fans set up the same? I just put together a build and I'm already wondering if I short changed myself on power. I'll probably beef up my gpu so I'm wondering if I can just rip out the old power supply and drop in a higher rated one (probably not for a year).

No, usually depth is the main factor (140mm-180mm)
No
Post your setup and what you want to expand

Hey guys, new build is done! Gleaned a lot of advice from this thread, so thanks for all the help. Here are my specs:

Asus Maximus IV Hero
Intel i7 4770k
Noctua DH14 ( love this freaking cooler, man!)
16gb DDR3
Gigabyte Windforce 780

I have a question, need some assistance really. First, how can I get the most out of my build? Is overclocking safe, easy, necessary? I do a lot of 3ds max, photoshop and zbrush.

Also, I have a 120GB SSD and a 1TB harddrive. I goofed and installed a ton of crap on the SSD and now I'm running out of space fast (the ssd has the windows install on it). How, or I guess, can I move or install programs onto the D:/ drive and run them like normal? I have tried but it didn't seem to work. (tried to install 3ds max to that drive and wasn't successful)...

Thanks for all the help guys.

Sorry to post again, but I'm really looking for some help on the D drive thing. And noted about the overclocking lostsupper, it isn't going to degrade or hurt my proc in the long run right? (sorry, total noob who is also very broke lol)

Uninstall-->reinstall.

Read a guide on clocking your chip. Overclock.net should have a Haswell/Asus guide. It can be as simple as changing two values in your UEFI.

Hey guys, I need help.

I just changed my PSU and GPU (first time doing this myself) but i can't get my PC to boot. First time, I got a blinking blue light (and I hear it trying to turn itself on and off). I went back and double checked everything was connected right.

Now I tried to turn it on a second time and nothing happens.

I look at my motherboard and see a green LED is on so I know it's getting power but why wont it turn on now?

Yeah, I have both plugged in. I could try again one more time. I'm kinda scared I might break the pins but I should I apply more force?
It will click over the latch lip and be snug if it's on.
Go through the HELP MY PC WONT BOOT in the OP or second post.
RAM: you want 2x4GB for dual channel.
SSD: MX100 or 840 EVO might be cheaper
PSU: Can't find info about it, would go name brand like Seasonic, Corsair. Maybe stuff like SuperFlower is more common where you are, not sure.

Had a little project this weekend, drilled/cut out the 3.5" bay in the Corsair 350D and added a MPCIE wifi card. I had to strip everything out and take my build down to just the bare case. I really enjoy this case, it's a pleasure to work in because you can cram it with a ton of components and still have a lots of room. I need to take a well lighted picture because it looks so clean!

I just ordered this. I don't want to expand anything right now. This is tons more gaming power than I currently run. Perhaps in a year I will upgrade my gpu, but I don't know what the power requirements might be.

Now you need an mPCIe SSD, bro.

Same or lower probably.

So, I haven't built my PC yet, but I wanna ask a question just to get some info. What should I be doing, in terms of general upkeep/maintenance? The case has a few dust filters, which I will keep an eye on, but I'm sure some will squeak through. What's the best way to keep the innards clean?

Maintaining positive pressure in the case, with intake only through dust filters. Clean the dust filters regularly and then clean out the PC a few times a year.

How is that? Always seemed like one of the better ones, in terms of fit and finish. Never tried one out though.

It is honestly great, comfortable for hours and I even listen to music on it. Situation has just changed and don't need it anymore

Ok thanks! I tried uninstall > reinstall.. perhaps it was just the program. I have the SSD with windows on it, the D drive is just storage. Was there something I needed to do during setup? Just making sure I didn't miss anything.

Amazon is really really pissing me off with my latest order. 5 days ago or so, I ordered the HyperX Fury 8gb 1866 kit and they had only 8 units available. The days go by and my order was always "Processing" then got fed up and contacted support via chat. Now it finally shipped yesterday but to my surprise, they were not shipping from Italy but from England. Predicted delivery (guaranteed) is the 31st, that's exactly one week from when I placed the order. First time something like this happened to me with Amazon, usually my orders ship the day after I place them and I receive them a day after that. I guess I'll have to buy Prime while it's still 10 Euro/Year... (we don't get tv shows and stuff, just expedited shipping)

I am also waiting on my Enthoo Pro that I got from CaseKing.de and it should be showing up either in the afternoon or tomorrow.

I just built my new PC yesterday, and things didn't go quite as smoothly as I had hoped.

The build:
CPU: Intel 4790k
Mobo: Gigabyte Z97X-UD3H
GPU: EVGA NVidia 780 Ti
RAM: G.Skill Sniper DDR3 2400 (1.65v)
PSU: CM 750V
Storage:
....256GB SSD Samsung 840 Pro
....512GB SSD Crucial MX100
....2TB HDD WD Black
OS: Windows 8.1 Pro
Case: Phanteks Enthoo Pro (w/ Window)
CPU Heatsink: CM Hyper 212 EVO.
Optical drive: Some ASUS DVD drive.

Issues I had:
1) The BIOS version that came with the motherboard, F5, did NOT play nicely with the 4790k. With everything on Auto, it set the Vcore voltage to 1.35v. Ridiculously high! I flashed the BIOS to the latest version, F7, and the Vcore is now a much more appropriate 1.175v on auto.

2) Setting up the BIOS to work properly with Windows 8 (+Secure boot) felt more complicated than it needed to be. Setting the OS mode to Windows 8 was simple enough, and that's all that was necessary to get Windows 8 installed in UEFI mode instead of legacy mode. To get secure boot working though, I needed to disable CSM, and change the SecureBoot settings from Standard to Custom, then go into the key manager and install the default keys. Standard simply didn't work, don't know why.

3) Apparently this bios has a silly bug: If you switch to classic mode, then exit without saving, you can't boot into windows without resetting! This scared me the first time it happened, thought I messed up my installation somehow. (Learned about this here.)

Issue I'm currently having (and need some assistance with):
My fans are too loud at idle. How are you supposed to wire your fans with the fan hub that comes with the Enthoo Pro? Right now, I have two things that use the 4th PWM pin: The fan hub, and the CPU fan. The mobo only has a single PWM header: CPU_FAN. And the fan hub only has 3 pin outputs. I just connected the CPU fan to the hub, with the 4th pin not connected to anything. Is that correct? I've set the CPU_FAN header to the "Silent" setting in the BIOS. At idle, and at around 30C temps, my CPU fan is spinning at ~1450 RPM according to HWInfo. Its minimum is ~600. This seems too high. Might I have to get a proper fan hub with PWM outputs?

Edit: Did some more research, unsurprisingly the issue is indeed that I need to connect my 4 pin PWM fan to a 4 pin header, or else you can't control its speed. I assumed that it would simply fall back to the same speed control method that the 3 pin fans use, but that doesn't seem to be the case. Buying a PWM splitter to solve this, hope that's enough.

Other remarks:
Will try to overclock after I fix the fans. Can only hope that I got a good CPU. I'm going to stress test the stock clocks before that though, since I'm worried I might not have much headroom.

Well considering this is almost exactly what I'm about to build. (Case, CPU, GPU, Mobo, Heat sink) I'm very happy I saw this post. It's my first, from scratch, build. I would have no idea what voltage a CPU is supposed to receive.

So... vertical green line across my monitor. I ruled out the cable/GPU since I unplugged the video cable and it's still there. Here's the weird thing: the "Check video cable" prompt box displayed in the middle of the screen is on top of the green line.

This is so annoying since I'm actually planning to move in the coming months and I was gonna sell my PC.
