Bravely Second: music will be composed by ryo (Supercell), new trailer coming soon

VERY mixed feelings on this. I do like supercell's works very much (although I haven't heard a lot of their songs since Nagi left) , but I can't imagine him working on an RPG. At least Revo's Sound Horizon had a fantasy feel to it, not to mention the epic guitar arrangements many of their songs have which works great for climactic moments.

Hoping ryo can surprise us.

Not like the soundtrack will matter if the actual game and story are garbage. So I don't really care that the composer has changed. It's not what matters. I've played plenty of games with forgettable osts. I'll survive.

Definitely disappointed, I bought the OST before Bravely Default was even announced for localisation in the west and it's what made me so hype for the game itself ;___;

And at least, it'll give Bravely Second a distinct flavour!

Banking on this! Hoping to be pleasantly surprised, especially since I don't like supercell much...

I don't know who Revo is before BDFF, yet he did a fantastic job. And then he kinda flew to heaven because of Guren no Yumiya.

Yeah, when I heard Revo wasn't coming back for Bravely Second my first thought was 'damn you Attack on Titan!!!' XP I mean, I like Guren no Yumiya but I think all the vocalised versions of the Bravely Default songs (minus Praline's stuff meh) are way better.

Loved Revo's OST for Bravely Default, but I won't be judging anything until I give Second's soundtrack a good listen. It could turn out great, in the same way that people were disappointed Meguro wasn't composing for Shin Megami Tensei IV, but the game's OST was still amazing.

I'll wait until I actually hear the new compositions before I start freaking out. To be honest, I'm glad that all these offbeat choices for bands are being used in RPGs these days, Revo himself never actually worked on a game before BD I believe.

I'm suddenly imagining Miku being a boss fight you have to beat for the Superstar Asterisk.

She made an appearance in the 7th Dragon 2020 games didn't she? What was her role in them?

Well that's a shame.
The OST and art direction are two of the big factors that made me enjoy BD as much as I did.

Hopefully this turns out alright, although from a quick youtube search all I found about the new composer are generic anime opening/J-pop songs.
Hopefully they do the same as REVO and try to keep the lyrics away from the OST (hated the live concert of bravely default with all the damn lyrics)

Ryo as a composer independent from his band is probably capable of a lot more than people give him credit for. It'll be fun to see how adaptable he is, and at the very least his work will still be supervised by the SE Sound Department, so I have no worries.

Ryo sucks though.... :(

This is like finding out that Sawano is composing for Xenoblade X.

Except Sawano is a great composer.... Maybe not as great as the Xenoblade/Xenogears/Xenosaga composers, but I have faith that he can make some solid music for X.

Anyways, I really loved BD's music. I still listen to it now and the live concert was so good. Revo's music will be missed.

Also, Square-Enix said that they want to turn Bravely Default into an annual franchise, or at least, have titles released in it every year (including updates like BD:FtS). The fact of the matter is that Revo wouldn't be able to keep writing music for the Bravely series AND keep up with his own band. He's also been busy with writing anime openings. So yeah, Revo's had a lot on his plate, and he's going to prioritize his own creation, Sound Horizon, rather than write music for Bravely Default every single year.

The odd thing is all of this also applies to ryo/Supercell. In the case people end up liking his work on BS they'll very likely have to adapt to yet another new composer for the sequel to that again. It's like Asano wants to help Jpop creators to go out of their way and write instrumental music.

“BGMs in recent games are matched with realistic graphics, and they have a sense of realism to go with them. I consider myself more of an old-school gamer, though, so I prefer BGMs that you can hum out, kind of like the ones back in the day. With that in mind, we decided to ask ryo for help.”

Melodic video game soundtracks ftw.
Looking forward to the results.

Everything here sounds good to me. Looking forward to the soundtrack.

square should just get hamauzu and uematsu to do the ost

No thanks tbh. I'm in favor of getting other composers, particularly ones who don't work on video game music regularly, to try to create something new. BD had a great soundtrack...let's see how this turns out.

The music was one of the main reasons I completely loved Bravely Default, especially the final boss themes. Fark. No idea who this new dude is but I doubt it will be the same style, a style which is right up my alley when it comes to musical preferences. Oh well, hoping for the best.

“I often get requests for vocal-related things, but when I heard that it was for game music, honestly, I thought, ‘Why me?’” responds ryo with a laugh. However, ryo says, it’s a genre he’s wanted to work on more, since he already handles one or two anime or drama BGMs every year.
Is that part correct or a mistranslation? I'm not aware of any (released) BGM (= instrumental background music, not OP/ED songs) works by him.

Except Sawano is a great composer.... Maybe not as great as the Xenoblade/Xenogears/Xenosaga composers, but I have faith that he can make some solid music for X.

Sawano is an overhyped composer IMHO. His orchestral musics for anime with loud sound and chorus lack of subtlety and do not impress me (it is far from what someone like Shiro Sagisu can do). The more intimate and acoustic side of his musical style is better but I still don't find it great...

I tried to listen to several soundtracks he did (particularly Gundam), and none of them wowed me. So I'm a little worried that I won't really appreciate X's soundtrack :(
