Thanos is a lot of things. You how there's that type of Marvel character who is the "brain" and has this badass laboratory, ie Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Hank Pym? Thanos is like them, he has his too, and he's just as smart as them.
But, then you have the "bruisers" like Hulk, Thor, etc. Well...
...Yeah, when he's NOT powered up with the Infinity Gauntlet or whatever else he comes up with, baseline, everyday Thanos can totally go toe to toe, punch for punch with the Hulk. When Thanos IS using his technology too, well...
And then you have the "planner/strategist" type character. Like when people say Batman can beat anyone with adequate prep time? Thanos is ALSO one of THOSE. He'd beat Loki at chess, easily. He's a master of the long game AND the short game.
He's kind of SO much smarter and more powerful than everyone else, that he has nothing to do. During Annihilation (the big Marvel space war from the late 2000's that sort of reset and defined Cosmic Marvel), he sided with the invading force from the Negative Zone basically just for the hell of it, because Lord Annihalus had some cool toys Thanos felt like playing with. He didn't really probably care who actually won.
Every now and then he gets a hair up his ass to go conquer all of existence to impress the grim reaper or whatever, and then everyone is fucked. The rest of the time, he's just the scariest, most powerful, competent person in the Marvel universe, and if you're a normal Marvel denizen, crossing paths with him is like having a deadly wasp land right on your face and then gently fly away.
When he REALLY gets fired up and decides to go balls out super-villain mode he essentially has no weaknesses, except that he is a bit of a simp (for the aforementioned "grim reaper", who usually personifies herself as a woman), and the "subconscious self defeat" thing that Adam Warlock (one of the few people Thanos listens to at all) describes a few posts back.
As someone totally unfamiliar with comics, this sounds like the kind of character that would result from kids on a playground trying to one up each other with their super powers for an entire recess.
Movie ruined, no point in seeing it now. Don't waste your money.

As someone who's seen Boyhood, you can't actually spoil that movie. Do not fear, GAF. Go watch it. It's my favorite movie of the year so far.

It is great that it isn't a spoiler to some. I don't get why people have to be so obstinate to those of us who were trying to know as little as possible.
lol infinity war.... Read Thanos Quest and Infinity Gauntlet, those events still hold up.
