I never put any thought to it. Everyone is aware of his propensity to being killed off in media and yet it seemed unlikely because of his star power compared to the rest of the cast at the time. Even with him in a cell, I never imagined him getting offed like that.

You can't know what anyone knows about anything though. Is it rare or absurd that someone wouldn't know this character was going to be in the movie? I don't follow Comic-Con news or read threads about upcoming movies I'm looking forward to. I saw the trailer in the theater and have seen posters with the main characters. Didn't know Thanos was in this movie.

It sounds like you're defending the principle of "I shouldn't have to go out of my way to be considerate" no matter how far "out of your way" you have to go (not far in most cases). A thread title w/o the character name would've been fine. Making it seem like an unreasonable "requirement" reminds me of seeing people (on GAF) complain about "political correctness" or "how everything I do is racist" when all it takes is a miniscule amount of thought and consideration to not be a racist jackass. Parallel to that, all it takes is an omission from a thread title to not spoil this one thing for someone who may not want to see it.

Will you be able to 100 percent prevent yourself from spoiling something for someone? No. Would that little bit of extra effort help prevent you from doing that? Sure. you'll never avoid doing something that seems racist to someone else at some point either, but you can refrain from spouting racist jokes in front of everyone which would help.

The "I shouldn't have to walk on eggshells because someone can't take a joke" line of thought is in full force here.

That's not at all what we're saying. The inclusion of Thanos has not been secret for a long time now. It's not on us to know that you wanted it to be.

We cannot design an environment to keep up the sanctity of your media blackout. It can't be done, and we shouldn't be expected to do it. That's got nothing to do with not respecting you as a person and everything to do with having no damn idea about what you personally have been avoiding or haven't seen or don't want to know. If it's public, if there has been a press release, if there has been media coverage and convention panels and interviews about it, how in the world can you call it a spoiler?

If you want a virgin experience, if you want to avoid all public information, then you need to avoid the public places where that information is discussed. We have spoiler threads for Real Spoilers™. The rest is within bounds.

It's just hitting ridiculous levels when you have to start spoiler tagging actual known news, forget it even being obvious shit, but actual reported news. At some point you have to stop expecting the whole internet to cater to you. If you are taking media blackout or spoilers to that extreme then start taking precautions so the rest of us don't have to spoiler tag everything and highlight to read to even discuss simple shit. If people are acting like this over Thanos do we have to watch titles with
Scarlet Witch or Quicksilver
Those are known reported characters but hell they weren't even in Avengers like Thanos was.

Thanos is in Guardians of the Galaxy. His casting was announced literally months ago. It's been confirmed time and time again he would be in the movie. Josh Brolin was on stage at SDCC just last week wearing a mock infinity gauntlet and talking about the movie. Because you did not know these things does not mean anyone should respect your ignorance. Your analogy with The Usual Suspects is way off base, because in your example the plot of the film (something the studio did want revealed) is spoiled. With this thread, the only thing spoiled is how Thanos looks. That's it. That he is in the movie was already known. This is a nerd-centric community, and people are on info as soon as it's released. We can't as a whole be expected to know and cater to your whims.

I'm not a spoilerphobe. I will look up spoilers for whatever suits my fancy, but it sucks when something could be a potential spoiler. I knew that Thanos would play a part in GotG. That's about as much as I knew from what little media I gleaned from the movie, before going on a blackout.

I never read any press releases, I never went to the conventions or read convention news, but I knew he'd be some kind of part. I honestly didn't know he'd have a much, much more significant role in this first movie in the GotG series.

And again, I'm not upset about the spoiler, just the spoiler titles I've been seeing a lot of on gaf. if GotG was Game of Thrones, people would be going apeshit over this kind of thing. I'm not asking for spoilers to never be discussed, but perhaps some consideration when naming a thread would be appreciated.

EDIT: Your hostility is also incredibly unwarranted. No one is coming at this from a point of anger or rage, (I'm certainly not) but you certainly seem to be upset by this. Thread titles should be considerate, that's all I'm saying.
 
If this was already reported about then why does this thread even exist, I mean new news gets a new thread but why couldn't this have been discussed in the one of the many official GotG threads.

There's all sorts of stuff that's revealed at conventions, press releases, w/e that not everyone is going to hear about. The Game of Thrones books came out before the show, right? I recall seeing thread titles here saying "no book spoilers." If you're a fan of GoT, what all should you know at the time an episode is released? Is it worse for a GoT book reader to mark a spoiler for those watching the show, or is it worse for the one watching the show to read a book spoiler?

Are Season 4 Game of Thrones deaths in thread titles allowed? They've been discussed in HBO media and episode recaps.

Would the opening of Hannibal Season 2 be allowed in a thread title? That was used as promo material before Season 2 released. And again, why aren't week-ahead episode previews allowed to be discussed in thread titles if all promo material is fair game?

You're not alone in being baffled if you seriously can't recognize the way you sound. Saying people are taking spoilers too seriously is odd when you're this vitriolic, and can't understand how this could possibly be considered a spoiler. It's one thing to not care, but this is something else.

The Game of Thrones stuff was pretty crazy last season. There were non-book, show only readers constantly going into the Book spoiler thread, and even when book readers took the extra effort to put "BOOK SPOILERS!" at the top of EVERY PAGE of that book spoiler thread, it wasn't good enough for non-book readers, and they kept getting spoiled, when it would have been easy to simply bookmark the show only thread.

What I'm suggesting isn't even that crazy or extreme. I suggested being a bit more considerate when naming a thread title, not police the content of the thread, and Crunched is jumping down my throat. I can personally avoid anything I didn't want to know if the thread title at least warns me there's something that some people could consider a spoiler. I'm a huge nerd/geek/gamer, but even I can't keep up with everything that's going on in the enthusiast market. That's why I come to GAF. I can at least glean some stuff that may interest me, in an environment that I generally feel is considerate of others.

if you(not you personally) expect the entire internet to not talk about widely known and reported news on the internet then perhaps you should log off GAF(a very large public forum made for discussion), cut off of your computer and wait until tv show/move/game comes out. You'll never ever ever ever get the entire internet to be more "considerate".

and in this particular case how is someone supposed to be "considerate" about something they don't think is a spoiler because it's on goddamn news headlines? This isn't some character death or a plot twist or a plot anything, it's a character casting for a guy everyone already knows about.

I never read the Hannibal threads and only saw that season 2 opener promo after having watched it. Even with the way that opener was set up, it was still a huge surprise just seeing it. Since it was a promo, it'd be fair game, going by this thread's logic.

Please point out how people not wanting to know the plot details for a future episode of a TV show is different from people not wanting to know the plot of a future movie. The argument made so far has been that anything released by the studio/network as promo material is fair game and common knowledge.

But its not arbitrary. I have no idea why people are bringing up Game of Throne book spoilers. We aren't talking plot points, we are talking about announced cast and their announced roles of characters that were in the first Avengers movie of a known connected MCU then announced to be in GoTG. We are talking about a cast star that was shown on the front page of yahoo yesterday with the Infinity Gauntlet on posing. Where exactly is the line of consideration here people are talking about supposed to be?

A better parallel would have been "Is it fair game to talk about the new characters cast in Game of Thrones Season 5 that were announced at Comic Con?" and my answer to that would have been a resounding "Yes".

You're just being disingenuous at this point. Knowing Thanos was cast in GotG doesn't impact your enjoyment of the plot at all, (GoT spoiler)
knowing Joffrey dies is a major plot point that does impact your enjoyment.

I recall you saying you were going to drop this a very, very long time ago.

Gaf has hundreds of thousands of members, you really expect every single person here to magically know exactly what you don't know? You expect hundreds of thousands of people to all know that a widely reported casting announcement on big news websites, that was made months ago about a character we already know about is now some big spoilerly secret that shan't be talked about? Not to mention this exact thread was already made and no one was bothered.
