So I just saw a post on smashboards in the K. Rool thread.

Apparently the attack that Kremlings use in Smash Run is based on that DK64 cutscene.

Seems like grasping at some very thin ice if you ask me, but the animation is really similar.

Obviously, this means that K. Roolis in because... reasons

Also, I can't really tell, but are the Kremlings redesigned in this?
This is awesome

Kritter is legit, yo

it had to do with the fact he was confirmed for a SSE enemy I think

I thought of that but I really couldn't remember the timeline, wasn't ROB confirmed as an SSE enemy pretty close to the launch? It was 7 years ago, things kinda meld together. Accidental character leaks with stickers were hilarious though.

The video where ROBs bring in Subspace bombs was probably earlier on.

Doesn't Kamek show up on the NSMBU stage to change the backgrounds?

Perhaps Alfonzo can show up and take over the scene transitions when someone plays Kamek

:P

Glad you answered your own question.

Edit:
I got an Alfonzo figure and i'm trying to think of good ideas for pictures for him.

Like, him on an empty toilet paper roll with the caption "When toilet paper joins the battle, Alfonzo takes over. Alfonzo: 'Leave it to me'"

I just remembered another pre-Brawl staple I referenced but didn't outline: the fate of Ness. Since Lucas was added and the phrasing of his Dojo update was that Ness had been in the game "up until now", there was so much speculation of him being cut. Lots of people considered him excised.

Now we are doing that with Lucas. Constants and variables.

Also, as much as I really do hate the Other M Clone Ridley, I've noticed that he's one of the few modern Ridley designs that looks like it can be scaled up and down without looking too weird because he doesn't have as many thin, spindly parts of his body.

I mean, not that that's ever actually been a factor, but if it ever was something that put sakurai off, the new design might change his mind, as much as I hate to say it.

Omega Ridley is a good alternative. Not as thin as regular Ridley or Meta Ridley.

I'm not sure if I'd rather have playable Other M Ridley, boss real Ridley (regular, Meta, Omega, X, whatever). Both seem about equally bad. Worst case scenario, we get boss Other M Ridley though...
That's what we're getting. = [

We're making outlandish suggestions now?

Noob Saibot will replace Ice Climbers as the duo character, his final smash will be "Make a wish".

August 21st was when R.O.B.s were confirmed to be in cutscenes, and September 19th was when they were confirmed to be fightable enemies in the SSE. So it was a decent while before launch.

Only for the ROOOOOOOOOOLLL babyyyyyyy

He's in the game though, assist trophy / stage boss or playable character

Unless the ultimate L in being a trophy/sticker again

AT- he shows up and runs back and forth 3 times for superior DKC series
Stage boss - its his ship from DKC2 and he's firing cannons
Character - 3DS holding Wii u back so we'd only get the first king k rool from DKC1 , could have had all 3

Looks like Nintendo's running another 3DS Smash tournament at Gamescon. No idea if its streamed or commented this time. Anybody know German to translate?

Quoting myself here. Talked with KHLover in the #smashgaf chat and he agreed to translate the tournament portion at Gamescon for us.

SSB4 tournament:
The tournament is 3DS for pools, Wii U version for Finals, with Pro Smash players commentating. KHLover said its being held on every day of Gamescon, so he thinks it might be a new tournament each day. Didn't mention if the tournament was streamed or not though.

Pokemon:
<khlover3> On aug 14 the inventor of pokemons battle ssstem is at gamescom
<khlover3> You can register online beforehand and then battle him
<khlover3> Fans also get a vivillon with a pokeball pattern

khlover3> You also get small stuff for mk8, tomidachi life and animal crossing

<khlover3> On saturday there'll be a streetpass gathering
<khlover3> Whoever has the most steeetpasss will win some nintendo swag

Mario Kart 8 tournament
<khlover3> The winners of all mk8 matches will draw lots for one yoshi rc per day btw, small correction

It was such a different world. Once fans latched on to a particular character they were BELIEVED to be in the game with all their might. Their fan demand was what Smash was all about, so every choice they came up with was guaranteed to them. It's amazing to look back and everybody who was supposedly 100% going to make it and then didn't.
This reminds me of Ridley, honestly. I don't think most people are realistically expecting him, but he certainly has the highest perceived value to actual value ratio out of all the prospective newcomers. At the end of the day, he's just a boss from what amounts to a B-level IP, but I've genuinely heard people say things like, "Sakurai is out of touch if he doesn't include Ridley," and "Ridley is the last remaining all-star." Those types of comments rub me the wrong way.

Don't get me wrong -- I'm not against Ridley on principle or anything like that. I played through most of the Metroid series within the last year in preparation for Smash Bros., and Ridley didn't exactly jump out to me as being particularly endearing or even interesting. I know people have different tastes, but I'm having a hard time seeing what makes Ridley such a compelling and necessary Smash Bros. character. My best guess is that people like him for being a "badass space dragon," but I don't think the character lives up to the fervor with which he's defended. He's just not that big of a deal to me.

Ridley has a new design in pretty much every Metroid game. I'd hope that if he were to ever get in Smash as a playable character, he'd get a new, smaller design made specifically for Smash to not look awkward.

We already know that the Ridley we've "seen" is the Other M one, so either Other M Ridley is playable, Other M Ridley is just a straight up boss, or best case scenario, there are two Ridleys in the game.

No reason why sakurai can't make a smash bros version of ridley. It's not like he hasn't done it before to other characters.

I want Super Screen Bros. that spanned various American and British television shows, with characters from Full House, Hercules, Charmed, Xena, Doctor Who, The Price Is Right, Weakest Link, Who Wants to be a Millionaire, and such.

Xena top tier

Because during a fan poll before development, Mega man was ranked #1 I believe. I can't find the link but I can vaguely remember that being one of the reasons.

It was either Mega Man was in or GENO FOR SURE CAUSE WHY NOT.
Well, a few reasons:
1) Sakurai didn't want any more than "2 or 3" third parties in Brawl. Snake being one left many people to assume Sonic and/or Megaman would be the other one or two.
2) Nintendo nor Capcom never flat-out said Megaman wasn't in Brawl.
3) People would fake leak that everyone's favorite blue character would be in, so people always took it as either Sonic or Megaman.
Yeah, especially Infanue being genuine with the answer when he was asked by interviewer about Mega Man being in Brawl.

Oh so it was Inafune

OOO more footage soon. Sweet!

I don't remember the exact details, but I think anything that counted as provoking a megaman discussion was seen as questionable/possible bannable behavior.

From what I gleamed, it was because sprsk was a douche when he was a mod, and constantly shat on anyone who was wanting Mega Man in the game, eventually getting so fed up with it that he made this ultimatum.

Okay guys, today is the day of the Megaman Annaversary party.

So lets make a bet.

If Megaman isn't announced today, all Megaman discussion in this thread is banned and anyone caught talking about it will be banned for a day. Even mentioning the word "Megaman" will get you banned.

If he is announced today, Superangelo64 and MrCheez can pick me out a new avatar and tag. Both of which I will have to don until the SSBB JP release date.

What do you say boys.

And Mega Man wasn't revealed, of course, so...

That would be the best case. A Sakurai redesign would be great.

That's just a matter of opinion really.

For me Ridley is the main antagonist of Metroid, one of my all time favourite series and that's enough for me, when I think "Metroid" I think of Varia Suit Samus and Ridley before anything else comes to mind. Also he's referred to as "the God of Death", love it, he's better than the likes of other villains like Dedede in my mind.

I have a hard time seeing what makes Lucina and Palutena such a compelling and necessary smash bros. characters, and yet here we are.

Also people just plain want more villains in smash, it sucks that they just keep adding on more protagonists to each franchise.

A lot of people like Ridley as a villain, not as a "badass space dragon". A lot of the Metroid mythos revolves around him, honestly. Without him there would be no Samus. Ridley is also the captain of the Space Pirates, even if he is rarely depicted as anything but a giant monster in his games. Which is weird, because they still go into all the detail about the space pirates rebuilding him.

But anyway.

Ridley - completely separate from Smash Bros - is as important of a Nintendo character as Ganon or Bowser.

A large part of the character's appeal, for me at least, is that he's an unstoppable force of Nature, something eternally recurrent that can only ever be abated, never destroyed. Ganondorf and Bowser like that to a lesser extent, but Ridley has an element of raw brutality and viciousness that they only have shades of, and even then only in desperation.

Who could get they for commentary, though? None of the NA players are going to Gamescom afaik. I don't know of any German Smash players... (doesn't mean they don't exist but I can't name any off the top of my head).

I don't know if I'd go that far. Ridley's role in most Metroid games ends up being usurped by a bigger, badder villain, like Metroid Prime or Mother Brain. It's always an exciting fight when he shows up, but it's never the culmination of the narrative, like Mario games or Zelda. I won't argue that he's recognizable, iconic, and totally deserving of a smash bros spot.

Ice.

Also players from the rest of Europe may attend, idk.

Kinda disagree about him being as important as Ganon or Bowser, but it's mainly because of what you just said:

he is rarely depicted as anything but a giant monster in his games

While he's TECHNICALLY important, nintendo doesn't do a good job at making him look like anything more than a mindless beast in most instances. There are very few times where you get a sense of intelligence from him, where you get a sense that he's the LEADER of the space pirates. He's also rarely the last boss, unlike Bowser and Ganon(dorf), which basically sidelines him a bit in the mind of some players. If they did a better job, I think Ridley would be much more important.

I can respect this, and again, I don't have anything against Ridley, but in my personal experience with the series he just falls short of the hype that Smash Bros. fans have conjured up for him. I was expecting... more.

Ridley - completely separate from Smash Bros - is as important of a Nintendo character as Ganon or Bowser.
I'm sorry, but this is objectively wrong. Bowser and Ganon are two of gaming's most iconic villains from two of its most iconic series. Ridley doesn't come close to their level.

I always see him just as a mindless monster when I play the series. I always forget he's the leader of the Space Pirates lol

It's because Ridley doesn't work as a final boss really. He's supposed to be more of a 'constant' threat that could show up at any moment to ruin your day rather than the end goal.

It's why quite a few of the games have him show up earlier than his actual fight or heavily foreshadow him to trick you into thinking you're about to face him, only to fight him much later when you've practically forgotten about him.

Also, he's straight up Samus' nemesis, the games might have other people/creatures/big bads behind the main story, but Ridley will always be the bane of Samus' life, being in practically every single game.

And just from a straight up character design perspective, he could be one of the more visually interesting newcomers considering a lot of what we've had so far (With Greninja, Pacman and probably Megaman being the exception) is really boring.

Apparently Ridley is the leader of the Space Pirates but he doesn't even look sentient.

I never understood this either. How is he a leader? Everytime he shows up he just screams and slashes at Samus like the giant purple space dragon that he is. I can't imagine him making detailed plans and ensuring they come into fruition. Is he checking payroll off screen?

That always kinda irked me about the way Ridley worked. Outside of the Super Metroid intro (and maybe some Metroid Prime logs), you rarely see evidence that he's intelligent or evil. You could just as easily play the games and think he was a monster locked up to guard an upgrade. But knowing the lore behind it, he becomes more interesting.

Even if he isn't the last fight though, it definitely feels like he's the most important one. Once you've fought Ridley in a Metroid game, you know the rest is just a run up to a last boss or two.
