are Tess and Ellie the best representation of "women" in videogames yet? who else?

A really prominent theme in the MGS franchise is that women involved with war or combat usually suffer just as much as any man does. There aren't any gimmicky deaths really, women are treated like anyone else on the battlefield.

They're just like any other male character in the games, except when it comes to opening their shirts and showing their bewbs.

Female Renegade Shepard. Also the only real Shepard. Male one is a poser GQ model.

Samus will always be one of my favorites, love the Boss and Bayonetta as well.

I'm not sure if Samus or Bayonetta are exactly good representations of women, Samus is a cipher (MoM does not exist), and Bayonetta is, well, Bayonetta. But I like her for all the same reasons I like Dante. She gives no fucks, does her thing.

Second, why is "women" in quotation marks? All this seems to do is suggest you don't mean women literally, but rather as a euphemism.
Chill, the OP probably just did that because people's definition of "woman" vs. "girl" may differ, I.E. Ellie is a teen so some might not call her a "woman" yet since she might not be seen as an adult in some cultures.

Not everything you read on the Internet has sinister intent!

Samus
Ellie
Alyx
Boss

And I'm gonna throw in Jenova, because she counts as a lady :') And Glados, because she counts as lady AI.

There are plenty of good female characters in gaming. But people only choose to see the over sexualised ones so they can yell and scream at the shy.

Outside of the fourth one (and even then, they're special forces as opposed to regular mooks), pretty much every woman you kill is a major character who dies a dramatic death. It has great female characters, but I'm not really seeing how it lines up with your point.

Not disagreeing with you but thats basically true of all main MGS characters, the Frogs were the only female "grunts" but they die like all other grunts.

Okay, which character deaths in the MGS franchise aren't dramatic?

I mean, you shoot a dying woman right in the face, twice. Don't know of many games where you execute women like that, where they're a solider and your mission is to dispose of them.

Chris from Suikoden III is probably my favorite female protagonist, design and personality wise. She'
s awesome.

Yup. Was just about to post this as my serious answer. .

I was so bias towards her and her party that it cost me at the end of the game.

For me, just the fact that Tess or Joel's personality, actions and most of their dialogue could've be interchanged shows that Tess' main character trait is more than just ''female companion''.

The Boss.

Strong, commanding voice. Has very specific philosophies and morality. Was one of the greatest soldiers of the 20th century, cited as one of the main reasons why the Allies won WW2.

Even though shes a solider she has femininity, but shes very masculine as well. She never demands respect, she earned it.

This is as good as it will ever get. Praise.

Aveline from Assassin's Creed III: Liberation. All around female character who uses her sex appeal, mind and strength to accomplish her goals.

Ellie is definitely one of my favorite video game characters of all time.

Yeah, but there's Zero Suit Samus and then there's Other M. That aside, she's pretty good. Well, Zero Suit Samus isn't that bad if you put a good character behind the design.

The Boss is GOAT.

And Yuna from FFX is pretty good. She's strong willed and she's one of the more mature characters in a large cast of characters.

The countless mooks you kill. They're all dudes, the fourth one aside.

Geez what is going on here.

First, why is representation of women something we should rank, such that there is a "best"? Why not "great examples of women characters in video games"? Representation of women is not a subject for list wars.

Second, why is "women" in quotation marks? All this seems to do is suggest you don't mean women literally, but rather as a euphemism.

Ha. Just noticed the quotation marks. What's that all about?

The only game where Samus gets any real characterization is Other M. And it's offensive, misogynistic garbage.

She has dialogue in Super Metroid, and a more fleshed out personality in Fusion. Other M is certainly a mess though. Regardless I'm not sure if Samus is the standard to hold up as a great representation, other than being a very strong female lead, given the fact that she gives up fanservice shots as ending rewards and often runs around in bikini's or skin tight suits.

With regards to the OP, no there are and have been more interesting females in gaming long before TLOU.

I also want to shout out Junon in Dragon Force because she slips my mind and is never, ever mentioned for any of these threads:

It's been a long time since I've played the game and don't remember a lot about her story, but I know she repped.

Are you talking about soldiers during sneaking sections or bosses when it comes to dramatic deaths?

Normal soldier deaths are dramatic in MGS2, they blurt out a grunt in agony and bleed everywhere. Shooting them in the gut makes blood spray out and they reach out one last time. Pretty sure its the same in MGS3. In MGS1 its dramatic when it comes to context, since all the soldiers underwent gene therapy to perform like Big Boss, you're essentially killing your own genetic brothers.

Bayonetta might seem like a joke answer because her sexuality is so up front, but she's one of the greatest examples of positive female representation in games.

Bayonetta displays incredible power and poise in every situation. She is never at the mercy of misogynistic stereotypes. In fact, her game takes special care to set them up so Bayonetta can shoot them down. She subverts every cliche by playing on your assumptions and then defying your expectations.

The whole story of the game is basically about Bayonetta learning to be the best version of herself by becoming her own role model. Seriously, she is an entirely self-actualized superhero who defies her fated role as a powerless outcast and pawn, and I find that fucking awesome.
