Resident Evil HD Remaster confirmed for PS3/PS4/360/XB1/PC

I don't get it, it looks great, i mean look at the floor...

From reading the thread, my take is the image on the left is a down-sampled version of the HD remaster so you can't see the actual 2D pre-rendered backgrounds are not higher quality in this new version, and the image on the right is a degraded version of the GCN release, so it looks a lot worse there than it actually does when running off a GCN. A direct screenshot of that exact scene running on Dolphin was posted in the thread a few pages back, and it looks every bit as sharp and clear as the down-sampled version on the left.

Well said.

How or why you'd defend the billion dollar corporation to not spend a little extra effort to maximizing the quality of their product, must have an associated mental disorder.

I get it. They don't owe us anything, but why support such poor output.

The Last of Us on PS4.. That's a great remaster.

Of a 2 year old game.

Key word there is Dolphin.

Even that screenshot is filtered and looks a bit rough, though it doesn't seem as bad. I'm gonna wait for direct footage, I'd assume if there's a filter option Capcom will let you disable it.

I think the filter is there to hide artifacts that would come from upscaling 480i content, so it's a pick your poison situation.

Fuck yeah!

Is there any chance for a physical release in the west for any console? I skimmed through the PR and saw only Japan getting physical

Probably looks better than it should because all the details are lost in the crushed blacks :)

Meh. I will likely end up playing it but are we really getting remakes of remakes now with the same graphics as the remake just updated to be in HD? We still have the same terrible tank controls and everything but the graphics are slightly better now?

Capcom is going to try and charge way to much for this aren't they?

Well nobody will force them to pay for it full price. And we don't know from now 'till November 2014 if they can optimize it and make it look better. If it ends up a shit port they will just wait for a 70% discount sale...

It'll be quite difficult to get it for anything below full price for a while though, since it's download-only. Though I guess you could find a good deal on XBL/PSN cards.

Lets hope that the "2015" release of the X1 and PS4 versions means they're doing more for them.

Perhaps ONLY the PS360 release will be re-using the lo-res backgrounds and we'll get lucky with the 1080p release in 2015 on X1/PS4.

PLEASE Capcom!

The main hall, dining hall, hall of mirrors, and the first zombie cutscene look off, but I wouldn't say terrible. Yet the kitchen, lab, and other scenes that utilize soft whites, greys, and blues look fantastic despite the odd object depths.

This may be a lazy port/remaster. But if this is complete shit, then I suggest getting out more.

Lazy and cheap = shit for me. Upscaled backgrounds are bad, even if the sharpening makes it to hide it sometimes, and the lost of the depth of vision on most of them are shameful. Some improved main characters and lightning is still below the minimum we should ask in these cases.

REmake deserved way more.

Yes, let's instead only look at the "best" screenshots and bury our heads in the sand regarding the "remastering" of this port.

No one said that. But it was the same shit we had with Watch Dogs, The Last of Us Remastered, and other games recently where people pile on a few or even just one image or gif, while ignoring everything else.

No one wants people to put their head in the sand, but people shouldn't be putting their heads up their ass either.

Both of those comparisons are unfair. The sales increased for the PS2 largely due to a much larger userbase, and comparing the sales of RE5 to the Wii RE4 port is just ridiculous.

It's not about the userbase alone...

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Resident_Evil
RE1 sold 3.88 million, RE2 6.16 million, and RE3 3.72 million in total on the PS1.
Whereas RE4 sold "only" 3.6 million on the PS2, eventhough it had the largest userbase of the three.
And RE5 sold 4.89 million on the PS3, and 3.33 million on the 360, eventhough in 2009 the 360 was well in the lead.

I can tell the difference just by looking at it. A cropped 480 image blown up to 720? Looks bad. The screenshots tell us exactly what we want to know: how is it remastered or ported? The answer is "badly."

If people want to play a worse version of the game, they're about to get the option. That doesn't stop my ire at Capcom for releasing this. Gamers would be better served by buying a Wii or a Gamecube.

It doesn't matter if you spin it as a port, a remake, or a remaster - it looks bad.

I don't get this line of thinking. How would the wii or gamecube version be better than this one? Maybe you're talking about emulating them? Some people don't like to emulate games or don't have the hardware to do it.

I wish people would stop using the worst screenshot of this game that exists.

re-008_bmp_jpgcopy25dru.jpg

i wish people would stop pretending like we need to see screenshots to judge how this game will look
we know EXACTLY how it will look, since they are not remaking anything
take any background from the gamecube game and scale it up to 720p and then put some sharpening on it. done
it's never going to look great. its a 580x448(or whatever the gc res is) jpegs scaled up to 960x720
whether you think the results look ok or good enough is up to you. but let's not pretend like we need to wait for more "official" screenshots to judge this game

Yeah I really wanna see what PS4/PC looks like, I don't think I'll be bothering with the last-gen versions.

Awesome news. My only hope is for Resident Evil 0 to follow, and how about RE4 PS4 with a platinum trophy for godsakes.

What does this say about Capcoms contract with Nintendo for this game? I always assumed it had stayed on Nintendo-plattforms because of some kind of money-hat. What should we assume? Was the money-hat timed, or did it just stay with Nintendo for no other reason than "lol Capcom"?

How else were they going to do it? Cut off the top and bottom of the scene and not scroll? Find a magic lamp and wish for more art to the sides to keep the entire scene visible in widescreen? Not have a widescreen mode at all?

The original mansion was an actual 3D asset they essentially took screenshots of to create the backgrounds was it not? Why can't they go back and re-render these backgrounds in true high resolution to get that extra art on the side? Do they not keep the original assets of games they developed somewhere? That's the only thing I can think of that is legitimately preventing them to do it.

This is lazy, nobody cares to play an old game like that anymore. They should have made a new Resident Evil one, like Tomb Raider did for the Tomb Raider series.

There's a lot of people who cares to play it... just like me, this game needed a Remake, we asked for it and we have it! :D

Because the backgrounds are still in 480p in this remaster, with some filters thrown over the top that decrease detail.

So really the only benefit of the HD remaster is that you're getting higher-res character models, at the cost of worse looking backgrounds. In that context, the Wii or Gamecube version, unemulated, is better.

The best comparison I can make is when Pixar went back to re-render Toy Story. The original exported movie was sub-1080p. They went back to the master files of the film and re-rendered the whole thing without touching the assets.

Will REplay on PC.
Damn shame for no WiiU release, for real.
It's not called a remaster, it's called an HD port, for your reference.
From what i've seen, Dolphin REmake looks better on my PC than these screenshots.
Looks like a shameless rip-off so far, but those who haven't played it yet should know that we are talking about one of the best games in existence.
No physical is the worst part of the deal.
Excited, sad and mad at the same time.

Well, we are coming up on 10 years since Capcom got out of the contract and announced a PS2 port of RE4. 10 is a nice, round number.

look on the bright side re: assets

higher res textures for model rips (assuming the models didn't change) and a pc release for even less hassle

yaaay (?)

What's the point if they aren't going to bother re-rendering the backgrounds? This sounds as lame as the RE4 HD release.

My initial enthusiasm is fading as this is sounding more like the cash grab capcom we have come to know since ps3/x360.

Also - why no 1080p for PS3 and X360? Sure they would be able to cope with pre-rendered background with the odd polygon char at this resolution.

I might buy this if its between $6.99 and $9.99.

I think that's a fair price for basically just the privilege of playing the game on a Next Gen console, since they didn't bother much with improving the actual assets, for one reason or another.

How about $20 sir? You know that's how much they're gunna charge for this. Also the fact that the PC version is bound to run at 60FPS. It will be glorious.

This is an old game and it would actually be bizarre if they went back and re-did it all again. It would be great, but that's not really in the realm of reality.
