1. You are not realising that you're being rude as fuck. You got no ground to stand on to criticise a man for his (alleged) intellectual shortcomings.
2. Let me list you some stuff I would consider basic knowledge and laugh at your illiteracy afterwards.

Calling Dan kinda uneducated or naive or sheltered or stunted is fine, but trying to call him those things while using inappropriate words is, as you would probably incorrectly say, "illiterate"

I finally got around to watching the WoW 30-Day Trial videos and man, these are painful. Not because of Dan, he's doing a great job considering its his first MMO. I'm probably far from the first person to say this, but man, we need to get Rorie in there ASAP. I know Jeff and Brad are doing their best to help him out, but seeing as they haven't touched the game in 7+ years - Dan is almost better off playing by himself instead of being given outdated information to work off of.
I like this series, but the cringe-factor is super high.

I mean, I think it's pretty much okay to make fun of him not knowing stuff and also his crazy lifestyle, as he clearly welcomes it, but there's certainly a way to do it that isn't mean-spirited and a way that is pretty mean-spirited.

If you're refering to the first comment on the site, then it's not really a spoiler. They very vaguely describe the ending of Blade Runner. There's no way to know what they're talking about if you've never seen the movie.

Do you know what the word illiterate means because you are using it incorrectly here. You can argue about Dan's ignorance to the world but the fact that he has written his own books and owns a kindle strongly suggests he knows how to read and write.
Anyway back on track everyone should watch Blade Runner and read Do Androids dream of Electric Sheep.

Well i would say the fact that he had written numerous cover stories and articles for GI over the course of 6(?) years is a bigger sign of his literacy, but those are true as well. He's also referenced obscure facts and films in various videos and shown he has a deep knowledge of video gaming, so the comment about him not being qualified for his job is also quite dumb.
I've not seen either of those movies, I need to watch them soon.

Dan's problem is that he's too forthcoming about what he doesn't know. Other people are probably just better at pretending to know certain things or keeping quiet and waiting for the person to keep talking to figure it out from the context.
No excuses for stuff like the shoebox though. I bet that thing looked disgusting by the end ofthat summer the first day.

I remember a couple of friends of mine in college eating pizza every day for about six months and never throwing any of the leftovers or boxes in the garbage. In the end their apartment had like three two metres high stacks of pizza boxes with all the leftovers stacked by the door.

My guess would be John Drake and maybe a fifth chair too. Need those Sony scoops from Drake, and Brad talked to Drake on twitter when he took over hosting duties that they should get him on the podcast ASAP.

I don't think it's a problem. The problem is people acting like jerks just because he doesn't know some stuff, or does silly things. I like that Dan owns his lack of knowledge on stuff.
He doesn't give a fuck and the negative comments just slide off his back. He's certainly a cool dude and has his own wealth of knowledge.

Blade Runner is a easy movie to miss.
Its almost never on TV. The only reason I actually saw it was I got a BR copy of the Final Cut version with Deus Ex Human Revolution.

I should have put inverted commas around "problem" in my original post. Others don't admit their lack of knowledge so readily. Dan does, and that "problem" leads to people giving him shit for it. That's all I meant.

God Damn.... Well me personally the only stuff I haven't seen in that list are Blade Runner, 2001, Studio Ghibli films and Season 4 of AD (but I don't give a shit about that one).
