Huge post
Very interesting read; love insightful posts. Always wondered what the exact method was to create these kind of games.
Thank you.

I'd agree with the lost source files argument. You wouldn't need to apply sharpening filters if the original background files still existed because they would've initially been rendered in high-defintion anyway and downscaled for the resolution of the hardware. I can't admit to knowing 100% how Capcom did it in the first place, but I highly doubt they rendered out still images at 640x480.
There's no guarantee this version is going to be better than the Wii version. I'd hold on to that copy if I were you.
Good god, you've seen four screenshots of an unlabeled version of an unreleased game, isn't it a little early to throw around phrases like "dramatically altering"?
REmake for GC showed up at my door a few hours prior to this announcement.
Still, something nice for the shelf.
QLOC managed to make the RE4 HD version on PC better than the Wii/GC version. If they work on REmake aswell chances are high that this will end up being better too.

In other news one of the producers had this to say:
"When it comes to the graphics, we didn't just want to make them look better. We have taken the game apart, polished up all the different elements, and carefully reassembled them in such a way that its original atmosphere shines through."

I'll still buy it the minute it comes on steam though, even if it's listed as 80$.
Also, they don't have the original data so they can't re-render all of it. Which is sad. Also, I don't get your 'shadow' complaint? I don't see anything wrong with those in the screens.
There's a grenade launcher glitch?
the devil within and RE remake HD... is survival horror back ?

Yes.Wow do I feel dumb, I had NO idea that they released the REmake on Wii.
This means I can play it on my WiiU!?!?

Assuming this isn't a bullshot, you can see that the trees and grass have been painstakingly redrawn (and presumably animated), and that the fog has lost its FMV artifacts. It's not a loving recreation, but considering the limitations, it's an impressive compromise imo.
Can someone explain to me what the hell is going on in this thread? I haven't played REmake since it was released, but I don't see anything particularly alarming in those screenshots; they're tiny.
What am I missing?
We just have the worst timing
I am so fucking stoked for this. However I am 32 now and dont know if I have the pastirence to play good ole' tank controls anymore. I wish they would fully render the backgrounds so we can have the OPTION for an over the shoulder (RE4 type) view. Althuogh saying that means alot of the mood and atmosphere will be lost. double edged sword man!
I believe the sillent hill HD ports had some kind of control alternative where down was down and up was up on the screen but with the constant changing of camera angles it didnt help much. conflicted emotions here
In a nutshell: it's a simple port labeled as a "remaster". That's what people aren't happy about.
game resolutions and textures have been significantly upgraded, including 1080p support on next-gen consoles

I very much doubt Capcpom would make the effort (and it would be MASSIVE) to manually paint out upscaling artifacts on every frame of a 30fps 10-second loop for every camera angle. I think it's just a really good scaling algorithm, perhaps with some minor tweaking scene-to-scene.
How is that not a remastering? They're changing/improving assets in the game. A port would mean it's the exact same game running on different hardware.

And this has a lower risk to them then going all out, when their last impression was that few consumers in the overall market cared for this style of Resident Evilin comparison to what has been bringing them more and more revenue with each iteration.despite the obvious issues that were platforms and demographics for said platforms.
Yes, it's easy money for them.
Yes, the way they are handling it is poor in cultivating a indicative consumer base.
However, it serves other purposes that could lead to REmake2/3.
I think the performance of this indicates if we will or not get a RE2make and a return to the old formula in future RE's, so people would be shooting themselves in the foot if they choose to ignore it.So I'm supposed to buy a game I already own to send a message?
I don't think I'd buy the same game again even if the HD looked fantastic. I want a RE2 remake. I'd buy that. That's something we haven't had before.

Now I'm wondering if I should bother getting Zero for the Wii or Code Veronica X on PSN, or if those will just come to PC eventually too
Why exactly is it unrealistic to expect them to redo the pre-rendered backgrounds?
I mean, of course it's gonna cost them more than just slapping some filters on them and be done with it but the amount of work is not really in the region of Avatar animation or is it?
Static backgrounds with some animated elements, right?
Give some Studio a Gamecube and the original REmake and they wont need more than that.
The time and effort it takes to make a CGI trailer for a modern game that lasts only a few minutes is probably bigger, remember the Dead Island trailers? Those people would have recreated the remake 3d scenes 3 times over before the trailer was finished.
Yes, I'm simplifying the undertaking and talking out of my ass, but they could literally not put less effort into the backgrounds than what they are doing here.
Don't we have people here working in that space (3d rendering/animation)? Take a wild guess at the costs? (wouldn't say much but I'm kinda curious)

True. RE0 seems destined to follow but I think CV would have come out already if it was going to.

There has been a sudden call for this game to be posted/remastered and here it is and Capcom is listening, so don't ignore them now you finally have their attention.
It's probably one of their nice realtime fog effects from their modern RE games pasted over a redrawn vista. Going to be very interesting to see what other visual changes and workarounds they make.
