I didn't say it didn't merit a discussion, I just don't think whole threads should be derailed and descend into exclusive Hayter/Solid Snake retardation. There are a lot of other new and original things to talk about. A LOT. Every time this thread is bumped it's the updated Team A picture.

well, given how old the game is. technical limitations prevented kojima from showing him tear apart a bunch of people in a cutscene to show how badass he is. if he's ever introduced at some point, i'm sure we'll see that

Yeah still have chills of that moment in MGS when you walk into that slaughterhouse hallway where Gray Fox went berserk v the soldiers.
Edit: Actually it's so long ago I played that. That was Gray Fox scene and not Vamp in MGS2? I remember he was a beast too in terms of CQC. It's all blending into one!

you got it right...you don't see much of the slaughter though. he just takes out a guy or two while still wearing stealth camo
but yeah, the vamp scene is obviously meant to parallel that one
Portable Ops shows a little of that with Null moving at superhuman speeds and slashing people in half. We also get a glimpse at his child self killing some soldiers, and he also seemed to be extremely good a it.
Eh, Gray Fox in Portable Ops is going to get retconned to hell with MGSV I imagine.

Characters in MGS are some of the best ever imo.
Hope not. I'm not really a fan of Null (Don't hate him either), but I also don't like retcons. A story has to have it's hits and misses. I'm not one of those people who bitch about "Everything I don't like must be retconed out".
I'd say just let it be.

Trust me, I hate that mentality too. However, with Portable Opsm there's some fairly big inconsistencies with the later games that lead me to believe the only thing we should consider absolutely canon is the ending and post-credits phone call. It shows Big Boss forming FOXHOUND, Ocelot killing the DCI and taking control of the legacy, and Ocelot & Zero intending to form The Patriots, hunt down the remaining Philosophers, and wanting to convince Big Boss to join them. Sets up the reveal in MGS4 perfectly.
One of the biggest discrepancies is with Gene's money. At the end of the game, Gene gives Big Boss the funds he used to form his army. At the time, everyone assumed this was the money that Big Boss used to create Outer Heaven, and that made sense. However, the opening sequence of Peace Walker shows MSF being poor as shit and one of the plotpoints, early on, is Zadornov actually helping MSF grow by giving them a base. I suppose you could write this off as Gene's money amounting to next-to-nothing in actuality, or Big Boss being terrible with his finances, but I doubt it.

I've always thought that Army's Heaven funds eventually went into the hands of The Patriots (As Big Boss joined their ranks shortly after Portable Ops). But I guess this is more of a headcanon than anything.
I want to believe this, as it would make thematic sense for why the guns aren't real guns in GZ.

That's a possibility, but the main thing to take away here is that it's never mentioned again when it should be mentioned, like with the opening to PW. Hell, that applies to the rest of Portable Ops as well, outside of the ending.

MGSV is providing tons of ammo for when the next MGS games comes and I can point out the insane fan theories that are always wrong.

Eli being Liquid, several hints:
*The age. Eli looks around 12, which is Liquid's age at that time.
*Blonde, long hair.
*Open coat, shirtless.
*Collar made of canine fangs ("In the middle east we don't hunt foxes, we hunt jackals!"
*Wears gloves just like Liquid always does.
*Smug attitude.
*Seems to dislike Big Boss. He even has a "Pig Boss" drawn on his coat.
*His coat has the japanese characters for "Liquid people" or "The liquid one".
About Quiet being related to Sniper Wolf. Highly doubt it. I'd say they are not related at all.

He was raised in England, but perhaps he had some missions/adventures/training in the middle east, or whenever we'll find him in the game. XD
Would like the remakes, prequel less sp. Though if Solid Snake and MG1 doesn't make even a tiny cameo at the end of this game i'll be a tad disappointed.
Yeah we know he spent time in Afghanistan due to his comments earlier in games. I'm probably being super picky and its not a hard thing to work around.
The character i'm really interested in Code Talker. Really want to see how he figures into anything. Ocelot of course is going to be just immense as ever but i'm not psyched on Volgin. To me he seems like quite a shit-tier character so for him to be the guy to haunt Snake after all the heavy hitters he's interacted with seems a bit off.
Big Boss forming Outer Heaven during MGSV is extremely likely. The question is how far they go into the timeline with Metal Gear 1/Solid Snake.
Volgin is probably just a hallucination. It would be stupid as shit if Kojima actually brought him back from the dead.

actually, it's pretty easy to conceive a scenario where this game starts and ends in 1984...leaving room for a direct prequel and remake of MG1 and/or 2 taking place in the 90s. similar to what many have theorized that this game will encompass. MGS6 following Big Boss building foxhound in the 90s for the US government and/or the patriots. all the while planning to attack them
I personally think if they follow up this game with that idea, as good as the game would be i'm sure,i think it would detract from how powerful this game will be. This game is the game showing Boss' descent into villainy. I would have to say anything after that would be unnecessary.

Actually, there's nothing about Afghanistan specifically in his history. He fought in the Gulf War as an eighteen year old and spent time in the middle east and most notably Iraq when he was with the SAS, he was captured by the Iraqis and made a POW and then he was rescued by the U.S many years later after Snake kills Big Boss in Zanzibar Land. He then joined FOXHOUND and later started the Shadow Moses Incident, but this all happenened in the 90s/00s long after TPP which is set in the early 80s... Liquid would be just a child in this game.
A lot of the speculation about Eli/Liquid being in Afghanistan in his youth was likely based on people getting confused with that part of his history in Iraq, but there is also the detail that he supposedly "speaks Arabic like a native" which is why he was selected to infiltrate the Middle East as a sleeper agent. So it was a popular assumption at the time that he might have spent part of his youth in the Middle East in addition to England where he learnt arabic and traveled between Iraq/Afghanistan which could have explained Eli being Liquid as part of TPP is set in Afghanistan. But none of that was ever certain, just an assumption and rightly so because it seems speculation that Eli's in the Middle East has turned out wrong.
It's still most likely true he is Liquid given we have even stronger evidence now, but the part about him being in Afghanistan is outdated. In the latest trailer, you can see Eli fighting Big Boss with the same chair as the E3 2013 trailer and if you look outside the window they're surrounded by jungle, which implies he isn't in Afghanistan or Iraq... perhaps Africa considering that's the only location we know that features a jungle and deals with child soldiers so far. So what the hell is Liquid doing in a jungle? Like you say shouldn't he be in England?
Well, Eli is actually wearing clothing that says "Liquid Man" or "Liquid Men" as Ishida pointed out, but he's also on what appears to be a shipwreck, carrying a conch shell, there's a rotting pig's head on a table and a symbol of a pig on his back with an eyepatch. Some speculation is that the conch shell and the pig are visual references to Lord of the Flies, as that was a story about a group of british boys that got stranded on a desert island without any adults, used a conch shell and tried to govern themselves and hunt a wild pig.
So the theory is that Eli/Liquid is like the "chief" of a group of child soldiers or "Liquid Men" in the game, and they're hunting down "Pig" Boss. That would be why in the sins of the father trailer he's got that cocky attitude and looks all authoritative like he's sitting on a throne. He must have somehow got stranded there somehow perhaps escaping during the middle of a Cipher/XOF/Diamond Dogs conflict or something. If this is correct, then it's pretty much completely new stuff, not really hinted at before in the series but still probably Liquid. So yeah, it is a retcon/new backstory.
Also, there's a very very outdated bio on Liquid that states he learned Arabic from the MI5 and studied it extensively to the point he speaks this tongue like a native. It also mentions he engaged in combat scenarios from as young as 13. I'm not sure how much of this still stands if it was ever accurate, Big Boss's profile for instance is like a completely different character from what we witnessed since MGS3, but it's still an interesting read nonetheless:
