You know, a lot of people use TLA as the barometer for episodes, which I don't usually like since TLA was as excellent as it was due to how it functioned as a whole rather than individual episodes. As much as I love the Beach episode, it only is effective because of both what came before for the characters as much as what came after.
Still, if there is any episode worthy of the label, it'd be this one. This was, by far, the best Korra episode has ever put out.
It played up both the horror and nobility of Zaheer's group. How he was willing to suffocate the earth queen the way he was, while still soundly believing he was doing the right thing. He shows his views are highly skewed by the fact that he shows no sympathy to the earth queen while treating the lower worker kindly. Lincoln once said "As I would not be a slave, I would not be a slaver." or something to that effect. I think a truly devout believer of Zaheer's philosophy would show the earth queen mercy, as the monarchs are just as bound by the chains of hierarchy as the common folk are, even if they're bound in different ways. It also went to humanize the other members, with Bolin's talk with Ghazan and Ming Hua. That one episode we wasted on Tenzin should have instead been spent getting to know these characters, why Ghazan and Ming-hua and P'Li are all part of this group. Azula's team got that kind of characterization, it would only help to have it done here. Anyway, shit went down, and it is awesome.
Mako and Bolin's plot seems mostly set up. They are emphasizing how bad Bolin sucks as a metalbender so that when he finally does do it, it's all the more amazing. I wish they played up Bolin's insecurity about it more. Like, why is he insecure about it, since right now all it seems like it's just a thing he wants to do. Like, if he admits he doesn't feel like he's contributing to the group as much as others, that'd be something, but right now, his metal bending is situational. It'd be pretty cool if he learned how to lavabend from Ghazan though. And Mako is still faithfully fulfilling his demanding job as space-occupier.
Asami and Korra's plot was great too. Kind of a dumb moment when Asami said she needed keys for the leather belted in Korra, but whatever. It's good that Asami is playing Mechanic, and I hope she continues to have a role later in the finale. I wish she'd get more combat screentime though. This was the perfect time to do it, because the entire reason they were in the desert in the first place is because of Korra. I wish Asami just told her not to Hulk smash everything in sight for once. Anyway, again, the humanizing of the ship crew is an important part of Korra's journey. The fact that once they got town, Korra didn't hold a grudge and they instead worked together to get out is a very good thing. This is what the avatar does, not mere bending of 3 more elements than most people. And I liked the Sand Shark thing too. It's good to see TLA sized creatures coming back.
