Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

I really don't get why some of you are hyperventilating about us losing more characters then we're expecting when there is literally no reason to assume that at all. The fact that characters like Toon Link and Lucina have already been confirmed really should have put those fears at ease.

I wouldn't call it hyperventilating. I'm simply trying to be realistic. Sakurai has hinted that not everyone will make it back, and while that's far from an out-and-out deconfirmation of anyone, I think it's wise to prepare for some characters to miss the boat, just as they did in the Melee-Brawl transition. Toon Link and Lucina are indeed encouraging signs that the team has some extra time, but just as it's a leap to think "Sakurai hinted not everyone will be back, therefore there will be massive cuts!" it's also a leap to think, "Toon Link and Lucina made it in, therefore everyone's coming back!" I don't positively believe that characters like Lucas and Wolf are gone, but I wouldn't be surprised to see them gone, either.

Didn't people deduce a couple weeks ago that's literally the same Marth model shown off at E3 with a different camera and light?

You know what that means: every amiibo will look like this in non-photo studio lighting.

Two song limit. Which ones?

Tetris Type A.
Tetris Type B.

Somewhat joking, but I definitely expect a Tetris theme.

We've sort of had this conversation before, but what are you guys most wanted palette swaps for Mega Man? I'm at work, so I can't find the picture I'm looking for, but someone made Battle Network skin that would be epic.

Oh geez, this has turned into a full-blown must-play Mega Man games list? Okay then:

Classic: 2, 3, 5, 7, 9, 10 (I also really like 6, but it's not a must-play)
X: 1-4, 8 (5 is good for the story content, but the game itself is meh)
Zero: 2-4
Legends: 1 and 2
Battle Network: 2, 3, 5, 6 (was I the only one who liked 5's strategy-lite bits?)
Star Force: 3

ZX and ZX Advent are both good, but not what I would consider must-plays.

The Rush color alt is a must, and we have that already from the demo. I'd also like to see Quick Boomerang (white/pink), Bubble Lead (white/gray), Fire Storm (red/orange), and Ballade Cracker (purple/orange).

And, of course, a straight-up Proto Man alt since he and Mega Man are the same size. (There was a fan-made one posted in the previous thread that's perfect.) I don't think X/MegaMan.EXE/Trigger/etc. alts would work very well since they're all a lot taller than the original Mega Man.

Hey, I'm just calling it how I see it. If they want amiibo to succeed, they need a compelling, easy to understand reason for people who own the games to buy them. I mean, you can call what Skylanders and Disney Infinity exploitative (and it is), but it's very easy to understand and gives people a good reason to buy the figures. Conversely, I don't think many people are going to be able wrap their heads around the whole "learning AI/virtual pet" angle, and those that do might not see them are all necessary since their friends, regular AI and online play probably already provide ample enough variety in terms of opponents. Ultimately, there's a good chance that the majority of Smash players will see amiibo as necessary for a fulfilling Smash experience, which, as the flagship game for the platform, is probably something that Nintendo doesn't want to happen.

I get the point you're making and to a certain extent I agree with it, Nintendo basically had two options

1- Let's make Nintendo-Landers a game that comes with 2-3 iconic Nintendo characters and players will buy more figures to unlock more characters for playing the game.

or

2- Let's make our figurines work with multiple games as a way to create a virtual character for people to play with or against. We'll push this first with Smash Bros our biggest game this year

The first one is the safer bet and would have probably made more money in the long run, but Nintendo is still (for better honestly) stuck in a mentality that you buy a complete game in the box and dlc/extras are just that, extras to your already complete game. Nintendo was never going to make a Nintendo-Landers because the entire Skylanders/Infinity design is built around getting people to buy more characters to do better in the game and access more areas. While they will certainly sell less amiibos by going their way, they assure it's truly just an extra option for people who want it and those who still want a complete game can just buy the game and nothing else.

I think Lucas is probably the most likely character after Ivysaur, Squirtle, and Snake to be cut because he's from a very niche series, his game in particular never officially left Japan, there isn't very much visually distinct about him compared to Ness and he's by far the least visually distinct "clone".

Then again everyone and the mother would be expecting Toon Link to be cut had he not been revealed last year. Honestly with Lucina being confirmed I'm really getting the feeling we won't see any cuts outside of Snake for "reasons" we may never find out, and Ivysaur & Squirtle due to the removal of transformations.

Yeah, and I understand that too. For me, Lucas is my favorite character from my favorite entry in my favorite series. I waited 12 years to play his game, and for a little under half of that time waiting the game was cancelled and I never thought I'd ever play it. But for most people he's just a quirky character from a game that they don't really know much about.

Hell, when Brawl came out I was waiting for the fan translation to finish, so while I was excited to have another Mother rep, I was pissed at the possibility of them replacing Ness with him (back when everyone thought that was going to happen). Getting to finally play the game and play with him for the last 6 years in Brawl has really made him my go to character. I get why he'd be the most likely to be cut, but that wouldn't change the fact that if he is that a huge part of the game would be ruined for me personally. But I don't really expect other people to really be that bothered.

So it is Paper Peach. Sakurai does care!
Besides Goombella every Paper Mario-related trophy in Brawl just talked about Super Paper Mario, which was pretty disappointing. Stage reveal makes me hope they're trying to cover every game from that sub-series for once.

Yeah I'd love to be wrong and for Lucas to be back along with Wolf. Heck for me even if they're clones the more slots the better I'd totally be okay with EVERYONE being back not just from Brawl but the cut characters from Melee too. Obviously the odds of that happening are slim to none but the bigger the roster the better even if it's padded as fuck

I do like his Battle Network design *still haven't played the games, I have watched the anime though lol*

Too bad transformations are gone, because a three-in-one Paper Mario/Paper Peach/Paper Bowser character, representing Super Paper Mario but also the series in general, would've been ace. :-)

I'm just happy we got a stage out of it even though if includes Sticker Star...

I joined GAF when I was around 19 when DKCR was coming out (so late 2010), so that's not too weird. I was thinking more around the 13/14 area, since GAF's cut-off point is 13+, right?

Technically yes, but that email restriction makes it difficult for people that young to even register.

Holy shit :lol As a huge Rugrats fan, this makes me insanely happy. Please include this in the OP!

When Otacon tearfully tells you, "Ness... He lived a good life," he really means Ness is somewhere else putting a gun in his mouth before a patch-eyed Lucas intervenes and wheels out an unconscious Sakurai, saying, "Ness, if we off this guy, we can be in Smash."

SmashGAF is on a roll today, lol.

Can we take one more second to talk about Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze music into Smash 4? I just remembered Jammin' Jams and fuck this soundtrack is the best soundtrack of the year from Nintendo.

That part from 1:30 to 1:37 is just so godlike.

Yeah, the soundtrack is really quite excellent. It just goes to show that David Wise has still got it!

Two things I noticed last night while looking through all the translated Famitsu scans again:

- This might (and probably does) mean nothing, but in one of the other articles' introduction (I think the Little Mac/Rosalina & Luma one?), the text says something like "This game has over 30 characters!" It's of course a translation so the original context is probably lost, but hopefully they meant "so far" and not "in total," or we really could be looking at a situation where a ton of Brawl's roster has been cut. Not what I'm thinking at all, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Having read a scan of the original article, I'm 99% sure it said something along the lines of "over 30 characters already unveiled" with the implication that many more were to come. ;)

Boots and avatar quoting. Makes me assume you guys are probably teens-mid twenties. Though the thought of a 40 or 50-something year old with waifus is fairly amusing.
I have a hard enough time figuring out people's gender without them explicitledy stating it, let alone their age. I'm 23 and always find myself accidentally assuming everyone is my age.

Guys, Ridley's not getting in because he won't sell toys. He's too lanky and bony to be an amiibo because he'd break apart too easily.

On a not quite unrelated note, Sukapon isn't playable.

Yep, all you need.

Does Nintendo own the original GB Tetris songs or are they public domain? There were remixes in Brawl so I assume the songs could be used no problem in any case

There's a company specifically in existence to handle legal usage and royalties relating to the Tetris themes, iirc. They'll let you use the Tetris theme for just about anything as long as you actually go through them.

I think it's just fair game for certain companies to use Tetris. The rights for that game are tricky.

That was it!
