United will turn over £100m profit soon.

Wage:turnover ratio is still one of the lowest in Europe.

They can easily afford a few big risks. Like £100m worth of risk, easily.
Will be worrying if you stay out of it for a couple of seasons and the new BT money kicks in + the Adidas 10 year deal drop. Could negatively affect commercial dealings too. Got 3 seasons to make it in.

For now, you're fine.

I'm sure that Adidas deal has various clauses related to securing CL football.

.

Yeah, 1/3rd of the deal value is paid out over CL participation. edit: whoops more like 20m slashed..which is no biggie. Don't know where I got that from.

Utd's biggest problem is squad depth, and with LvG preferring to mow the lawn than let the weeds stay, the challenge is to stay in it till January and ask Jose to sell them Cesc (/s). That said, under his guidance, RvP and Rooney will be back to their former selves.

I have heard posts on Redcafe hoping we lose against Swansea to kickstart our signings process, its a silly concept. That being said I think its very possible we will lose to Swansea.

Qualifying for the CL is so so important which is the lack of signings is causing more bewilderment

Ok so you risk 100m and don't make the CL. Then what do you do? Throw another 100m away trying to secure it? Everyone saw how easily it can be done with Spurs last year. Now they aren't spending anything probably out of fear more than anything else.

On the other hand you can stick with what you have, use the squad wisely over the course of the season since you will be playing less games and then have 150m+ to splash next year when you are a much better proposition and it will be easier to persuade top class players.

It still doesn't greatly alter the element for risk. The club could go without CL money and a reduction in the Adidas deal and still make tens of millions in profit post tax and deductions.

Third party ownerships are illegal in the UK aren't they? So they must have paid out them too?
And it's Doyen too.

Yeah it is stupid, and I don't expect you to lose.

LvG will have his own ideas about what to do and won't panic into decisions. I'd also be a bit concerned about RvP & Rooney aging too.

Yeah you're fine in terms of financial stability/risk, but I'd be worried about other clubs becoming more competitive in that department.

Not qualifying for CL 2 years in a row will be terrible

There is greater risk attached to not being a competitive team than there is to spending £100m this summer.

I'm not saying they should do that and just pay whatever people demand. But if you're talking about which could be more harmful to the club long term, it's not spending £100m here and now because the club have that and will make another £100m for the bank in the next 18 months.

Exactly. But the top dogs at the club will be doing all sorts of risk assessments around that sort of thing. They will know that splashing 100m and then failing again will be incredibly detrimental. Not only do you then become even more unattractive to players from the outside, you will also have a lot of unattractive assets (Fellaini) on your books that you wouldn't be able to shift if LVG gets the sack.

Last year you would have fared no better or worse if you hadn't have wasted 30m on Fellaini. LVG will be aware of that and will not want to repeat the same mistake. Only buy players that fit your system and that you know are superior to the players that you currently have for that position.

Regardless, you don't need to spend 100m to improve the squad. Just 50m on a couple of players (1 midfielder and 1 defender) would suffice.

This is almost worse than spending £100m on transfer fees.

You could potentially be lumbered with dross on high wages that can't be moved and is taking up a place in the squad.

Deadwood is the squad is horrendous, as we've seen in Arsenal.

The question is why LvG isn't spunking the money then. Be hilarious if he went all Wengermode.
Van Gaal is on record saying he doesn't really like spending big money iirc. It's not his style. Not massively surpaijng that he has taken this kind of approach. He will definitely fancy himself as somebody who can get more out of players and that type of thing.

The problem is that the people at the club obviously don't know what's going on. First they said LvG being at the World Cup wouldn't impact plans which would stay they same. Then they said he would get to work on transfers after the WC. Now he's waiting to assess the squad.

People clearly aren't on the same wavelength.

Good article.

Grown men in football shirts... going to the football or playing football, ok. Otherwise, u wot m8.
Grown men in football shirts with a number on... acceptable if playing, barely. Otherwise U WOT m8.
Grown men in football shirts with name and number of a player on... NEVER acceptable. U FUCKING WOT m8
Grown men in full kit with name and number... get castrated.

Good on him then, but I don't think the board and some fans would be too understanding if he doesn't deliver. It's the Arsenal lean years except the money is there. He could do a City and poach players from the PL with promise of more wages, but that could destabilize the wage structure.

You're a #3 aren't u m8

I wear my Torres Liverpool jersey proudly

I only saw one grown adult male in a full kit when I went to United Liverpool preseason.....

It was a Liverpool fan. Gerrard on the back, matching socks and indoor Adidas shoes.

he's probably fat

*looks at avatar*

YUP

and his team probably wears those ultra tight Puma shirts.

Do and wear whatever the fuck you want, fuck everyone.

Of course he is. I think we can all agree that full kits on adult looks pretty silly, but who cares... Oh yeah, people who are too fat to get into their slim fit football shirt. I don't understand people getting so upset about crocs either. Yes they are fucking ugly, but why do you care, do you have so little to care about in your life?

EXACTLY!

The top 10 selling names on EPL replica shirts in 2013/14 were:

1.Van Persie
2.Gerrard
3.Suarez
4.Hazard
5.Ozil
6.Rooney
7.Kun Aguero
8.Mata
9.Kagawa
10.Lampard

How Kagawa remains so high, I do not know.

Yo I wear kits out frequently, they are comfortable like gym shorts. I'll rock gym shorts and a kit go over to a friends house and shoot the shit. Then maybe we go down to a bar down the street, not like I'm changing, its just a bar.

I think the stigma is less over here because for the most part you're almost a hipster wearing a footy kit around. I get a lot of comments on the throwback United kits I have.

Surely that list is wrong. Last time I show, Torres was in the top 4.

That Asia Pacific fanbase.

Why do you think we signed Park only to never play him?

retro football shirts are definitely cool now. but regardless people should feel free to wear whatever the fuck they want without articles from 'journalists' begrudging them. if the same scrunity was applied to them i'm afraid they'd also be considered fashion disasters.
