Rise of the Tomb Raider timed Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015 (No PS/PC, SE publish)

I guess my lifetime love affair with Lara is over, pity but i am sure UC4 will be a good replacement. As for ms you cannot blame them, they are facing a trouncing and need help i guess the wallet is a bit emptier now.

Doubt it. Sony's days of paying for outright exclusivity seem to be done. It's either exclusive content or co-development on games.

Look at Overdrive, Sony wanted full IP rights.

Glad they were smart enough not to make that deal with Sony.

10 million ps4s vs <5 xbone of course there will be more complaining when a game is exclusive to xbone. We outnumber them 2:1.

Fuck Microsoft

Console wars is real. lol @ calling yourself "We" and X1 owners "Them"

If MS paid SE for exclusivity and the price tag was anywhere less than $180,000,000 (3 million copies on ps4 assumed) then holy crap SE, bad call.

I thought devs learned from Titanfall already....
Titanfall at least had the excuse of getting a new IP funded, especially after a legal battle wore down on the developers. This is just SE/Eidos continuing to be idiots if it's not a grossly huge sum.

EDIT: And frankly short of the XB1 being retired/leaving the market before FFXV/KH3 hit it WOULD be lame if those got to be PS4 exclusive. That'd hit me less due to having PS4, and it's not as if they had a strong presence (any in the case of KH3), but they announced it for those systems so having that pulled is lame, similar to this case even if it was assumptions rather than solid confirmation.

I'm actually really saddened by this. I loved Tomb Raider 2013 and if it wasn't for The Last of Us it would have been my GoTY.

Guess I'll be skipping this new Tomb Raider. Shame on everyone involved in this deal.

that 3.4 mill was in the 1st month, those ARE Uncharted numbers. I dont know what SE was expecting. how much did the game cost.

Square Enix like most publishers can't manage budgets and that's why they moan about bad sales and go bust. TR2013 cost 100 million dollars to make, compared to the 20 million of Uncharted 2, and TR doesn't look 5x better or offers more content.

They started it. They could have made some game like what they did and gave it a different title. Instead, they had no problem destroying literally every element that made the series any good and replacing it with abject shit. So I have no problem returning in kind my seething hatred :D

Learn to love and move on, friend. What you said can be applied to practically every franchise forced into the AAA pit; Castlevania, Hitman, Devil May Cry, Resident Evil...you can let the changes burn your skin, or you can choose to just bail when you see they are all now wolves in sheeps clothing, an imitation, a falsehood, a farce.

"Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened”~Dr. Seuss

Replace "cry" with "anger". What you enjoyed of Tomb Raider may be over, but you still have those. You do not have to partake in the "imitation" for namesake.

Holy fuck, is this true?

Didn't the definitive edition sell almost 2 to 1 in favor of the PS4? Very anti consumer and very odd decision there must have been a truck full of Microsoft money at the door to make this happen. Also very surprising considering the missed PC and PS4 userbases would have more than likely resulted in much more money unless MS paid an absurd amount.... Ok now I want to know how much they dropped or at least a good educated guess.

What gets my goat is that Microsoft could surely put this money into the establishment and production of more IPs for their brand? How long are Halo, Forza, and Fable going to be pillars?

More IP's? What about Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break, KI, scalebound, or even crackdown 3?

The way I imagine it is, their CEO saw a bunch of quick money without looking at the long term. A lot like their push to make Puzzle and Dragon clones lately.
To be honest, I imagine that to be the case too.

But you know, aside from a potential harm to the Tomb Raider fanbase with this, I just personally don't think TRoTR would sell a lot on PS4 due to Uncharted 4 releasing around the same time-frame.

So now they will sell the 'Definitive Edition' on PS4 without the direct competition of U4 on PS4 later on.

It all really depends on how big the paycheck has been though, that and how harmful this move will end up being for future installments of the franchise.

If the Xbox division have a lot of money, would it not be more practical to cut the price of the Xbone by 50-100€ and eat the loss, to undercut Sony? TR is not a big system seller, if at all.
Or better, wouldn't have been better come out with a powerful console for that price, instead of something weaker than PS4?

yeah this, Uncharted was a big profit for Sony

By moneyhatting a previously multiplatform game into timed exclusivity? Please tell me how that does anything but fuck over everyone else. That is 100% different from No Man's Sky, Fez, or DayZ.

It's desperation, they did it with Titanfall and it didn't help then, it's not going to do anything this time around.
They funded Titanfall and kept EA from canceling the game after Respawn kept going over budget and having poor management.

It doesn't fuck anyone else over. You make it sound like you have some condition or disease that absolutely prevents you from purchasing and enjoy an Xbox One.

Regardless of a consumer having an Xbox One or not, everyone has equal opportunity to play and purchase The Rise of the Tomb Raider. All you do is walk into a store and give money to a company.

Already own an Xbox One? Great. You're "rewarded" for your $500 purchase by being able to play a new exclusive.

Don't own an Xbox One? That's fine. Do you want to play this game? Buy a Xbox One then. If you don't find this game worth playing, don't buy an Xbox One and continue playing your platform of preference.

There's absolutely nothing stopping you right now from playing this game other than your unwillingness to purchase an Xbox One. And that's fine. If you don't want an Xbox One, that's fine. You limit the amount of games you can play though, and I don't think it's reasonable to go around and say statements like "I hope this game bombs and cripples the franchise!"

Nothing is stopping anyone from playing this game but a person's unwillingness to buy a stupid Xbox One.

I'm a bit late to this. Let me get this straight.

Square has repeatedly said Tomb Raider (2011) underperformed (despite 6m? sales)
So they release it timed exclusive on the least populated console that will hurt it's holiday sales?
Also Tomb Raider is kind of known as a Playstation game. Started there and a lot of the beloved games were Playstaton games.
Are they banking on that sweet sweet MS money being their main source of income?

Thank you, you replied way more eloquently than I would have.

No, before I gave a guy $60 bucks and he gave me a game. Now for some stupid dumb ass reason, the guy wants me to give some other person $500, before I can give him $60. And to the bolded, how old are you? Do you buy your own consoles?

After reading these statements, I'm definitely under the impression that this is a timed exclusive.
They can't just come out and say it plainly, as they're obviously wanting to maximise sales for the XBone first, but I'm pretty sure that sometime after the 2015 Christmas period, we'll learn about a PC or PS4 release date. Maybe sometime towards the 2016 holiday period.

Until they clearly state "This is an Xbox One exclusive, and will not be release on other platforms" then I won't be convinced that this isn't timed.

I could understand this movement on Titanfall, I mean EA gain MS marketing machine to publicity of a new IP, which can be hard to set a foothold for future entries.

But for an IP that was just rebooted on 3 different (5 if we include PS4 and Xbone), and took months to reach profitability releasing an exclusive entry for Xbone with it's middling sales?

Sounds like a pretty bad idea, this will entirely stop all the grow gained with the first entry...

Oh well, TR sucked balls, so no big loss for PC/PS owners...
I'm pretty bummed by this myself. I was someone who really enjoyed the DE edition on PS4 and was looking forward to the sequel. But, this is certainly not a game that I will buy a system for so if it truly is exclusive, I just won't be playing it. I may have an Xbone by then but the DE on PS4 was better than it was on the XB1. Why choose the system with the worse version?

If Square Enix is accepting money hats for timed exclusives, then I wonder if Sony has anything with FFXV or KH3.

Do people really not realize how broke Sony is right now? They could afford an exclusive costume in FFXV.... that's about it at this point.

Pretty much my feelings, and i just finished TR:DE a couple of days ago on Ps4.

I suppose this is a good get for MS.

Personally, as an XB1 player, i'd rather this be multi and MS use the money (which must surely be a sizeable amount) to invest in their first party instead.

Or better, wouldn't have been better come out with a powerful console for that price, instead of something weaker than PS4?

Absolutely, it would have.

Which is why everybody should be pretty thankful that the primary architects of the Xbox One 'vision' have left.

Now we can only hope that they guys taking up the mantle can turn this cluster around.

If phase one is 'get as many great exclusive (temporary or otherwise) games onto the Xbox One as soon as possible', that's at least a mindset and a set of priorities I can get behind.

To be honest, I imagine that to be the case too.

Eh, it would have sold regardless.
The big thing I feel they did right now is create a lot of ill will toward fans and destroy trust in the process for what is supposed to be the continuation of a game that put the TR franchise back on the map.

Nah, its pretty much spot on.

Spot on? Do you remember how "Xbox fans" responded to a rumor about Bloodborne exclusivity? How it could be timed, even with full information stating it was funded and co-developed by Japan Studios?

The highway goes both ways.

MisterxMedia' s take on todays news

I facepalmed so hard, my hand is time traveling while the rest of me is here.

Every single source leaves to timed exclusive. Right now it needs to be confirmed exclusive.

So has it actually been confirmed exclusive?

So we're still at "Xbox exclusive for Holiday 2015" with speculation that it's timed?

Was just wondering if there was official clarification one way or the other.

OK then.

100% real. I can show you my Tomb Raider review from the original thread. One of the worst games I've had the displeasure of playing last gen, and it was made worse by the fact they bastardized one of my favorite franchises and a true original series.

I am seriously so giddy right now that this has happened. SquareEnix is the king of stupid business decisions, but I genuinely hope this one cripples the franchise hard. I don't know if it will (and it probably won't), but I hope the franchise is at least hurt by it. I fucking cannot stand what they have done to the series. Skill-less, cinematic garbage designed to meet every absurd specification of modern game design. Pass Pass. PASS.

I am all for people having the games they enjoy and whatnot, but this is a unique exception because they REPLACED a good series that was original with an atrocious series that is a piece of shit in every way. So, since they had no problem doing that to a franchise I cherish, I have no problem wishing its demise :D

Wow, I actually loved it. I remember getting the Gameinformer a whole back when it was on the cover and was so hype for that. Bought it day one two and loved it. I loved tomb raider when I was a kid and thought this was a huge evolution for the series. I understand it could of kept a lot more of its originality but I had hoped that since part 1 was introducing the story, part 2 would bring it back to the roots. I have an Xbox One so I'm not exactly missing out on it, but it sure is disappointing to say the least, others who don't have the funds to buy the Xbox One or who don't want one - wasn't at one point able to play it.

I don't want it to die :(. But rather it be put in more competent hands that isn't only bias to money (Square).

Why are people comparing this to Sunset overdrive? Or even Titanfall. They're nothing alike.

Tomb Raider has been multiplatform for a long time now and its a long running, well established franchise. This is a dick move by microsoft, and it just further distances me from xbox. Shane because for a while it looked like they were actually trying to make an effort with their own games.

Hopefully it does end up on PC since a lot of xbox games are getting ported. I'll buy it cheap in a steam sale though, Square-enix has no chance of getting full price from me.

I wish they thought/would think Dragon Quest games would make quick money on Windows Phone... Would love to play DQ8 again. I know it's not happening, but still... (sigh)

every new page of this thread is becoming a repeating cycle now

- this is ms's bayonetta 2!
- but why is bloodborne exclusivity okay??
- oh but you're fine with Destiny timed exclusive DLC?
- it's the next titanfall
- but why is hellblade exclusivity okay?

I think there are a lot of gamers out there that underestimate how much more attractive guaranteed, up-front cash can be to projected sales figures.

One lets you invest in the future immediately, or covers the cost of the present. The other is a hope that you don't go into debt if a game you put 18 months to 2 years into doesn't perform as well as expected (RIP THQ and go knows how many other companies that banked on future returns).

This is why I'm absolutely confused at this move right now, either SE is going to knowingly sell an absolute bomba in their eyes, or MS compensated for their bloated expectations.

If it is truly exclusive how can you compare a game on X1 to a game not on PS4?

According to you TR not on PS4 is a better version than TR on X1. wow.
