There is little next to no difference between police & military presence/equipment/appearance in 2014. Joint training/operations has created that threat that our right to bare arms warned us about.

It's pretty scary and almost makes me think the gun-nuts have a point.

PS: How exactly are police dogs useful in a riot situation? It's just horrible optics and I've seen those pics side by side with pics from the civil rights era

PS2: Why do cops only use rubber bullets and tasers to disperse crowds after they've killed unarmed people? Seems like those should be standard-issue

Rubber bullets definitely need to become standard-issue in lieu of real bullets for use against citizens who aren't drug kingpins, mass murderers, and heavily armor-bodied bank robberers.

No. When they are unarmed, it's the nighttime, the police are obviously trigger happy and launching tear gas at anything that moves; maybe that isn't the best time for the protestors to fight back. Things would only escalate, and more people would be injured or worse. Showing any kind of hostile activity, at that moment, I believe would be detrimental to their cause. I'm not saying bail on everything the protestors believe in, I'm just saying that that particular moment wouldn't have been the best time to fight back.

If the police are going to use a weak ass excuse to get away with shooting a kid, how hard will it be for them to justify attacking the protestors? I wouldn't give them a reason to. It's avoiding one particular situation in the grander scheme to get your side out and to prevail.

I'm going to bookmark this thread so I can remember...

We are having a racial and other-biased based policing event in a couple of months. We hold this event once or twice a year. In it, we invite community leaders, members of the community, and students to the event to discuss a variety of topics. It's a two day event. Most of the attendees stay over night at the school. We give them a tour of the facilities, and show them all the ways we train officers. This includes sitting in on classes, having them participate in FATS (Fire Arms Training Simulator), participate in simulated vehicle stops, you get the idea. I'll ask them about being tear gassed, and if going in your house is the negative that some here think it is. Personally, I would go into my house, because I think I could better my cause being mobile and relatively unharmed than hospitalized/incarcerated/dead.
