I'm in St. Louis by the way. And as fucked up as all this is, the situation is being over sensationalized. Sorry if you don't like that. But it's true. This thread reads like the entire god damn town is a war zone with cops somehow blocking Twitter trends. For gods sake. What was it last night? They'd cut the cable in Ferguson? All of this (again, as fucked up as it is) is contained to a pretty small section of town.

I'm not saying what the police are doing is ok, I'm saying this thread is almost like reading anarchy porn. There's some lust for this to be a war that it's simply not.

I think you are seriously misreading the general tone of this thread.

Does it really matter the size of the town?

Did someone really suggest that the Ferguson police were blocking it from trending on Twitter? That kind of epitomizes my point last night about the nonsense being spread around.

Facts about tonight:

A. Cops are dicks, but there is a lot of antagonizing

B. Protest group is smaller tonight. Peaceful groups are out during the day. The night crew is different.

C. There were no gunshots or army coming that scared off the cops. It was a small group of people that refused to turn around when ordered. They may have thrown something.

D. This is all taking place in a very small area. If you move up or down the street a bit it's pretty quiet. The city of Ferguson as a whole is not under siege.

This whole event just seems to be getting blown completely out of proportion on social media an on here. I'm glad the local news has toned it down a bit.

Those commercials after the serious tone of the story are surreal. Crayons for less at Staples!

What kind of range do their tasers have?

You're right. This isn't a war. This is just one of 400+ years worth of battles in the war.

But... but that fair is important. It's not just a city fair. It's not even a county fair. It's the STATE fair. I'm sure his assistant was as distraught as I am when they were told to clear his schedule tomorrow. "I don't even care if it's the state fair! Cancel it!" "But sir!" "I don't want any 'buts'!"

Huh? Of course if you live in South or West County you aren't going to see anything, it's white as shit isn't down here. And metro areas are as a general rule pretty huge.

Doesn't make it okay or less of an indictment of the county and the state of Missouri.

Who exactly said the cops are blocking twitter trends? Someone asked if TWITTER was blocking #Ferguson from trending. How does that equal to cops blocking it and/or cables being cut?

Somebody finally found the smelling salts.

LOL. I'm here.
If you were where the cameras were rolling, is there something you'd like to add? Because there were several live streams showing what went down, as it went down. You don't have to believe the entire city is in flames to consider tonight's events to be completely out of control.

I've read almost every post since about 7 and I haven't gotten this same feeling at all. It's not being over sensationalized when the police show up in military gear or when they order people to turn off their cameras or when they force news organizations to move their satellite trucks or when they fired tear gas at the news organizations who stayed or into peoples yards.

Everyone needs to read this.

Now.

Throughout this time, we asked the officers for badge numbers. We asked to speak to a supervising officer. We asked why we were being detained. We were told: trespassing in a McDonald’s.

“I hope you’re happy with yourself,” one officer told me. And I responded: “This story’s going to get out there. It’s going to be on the front page of The Washington Post tomorrow.”

And he said, “Yeah, well, you’re going to be in my jail cell tonight.

I don't really think the size of the town matters. What people are reacting to is the magnitude of the abuse of authority, and treatment of civilians (especially if they're black) at the hands of police.

What would it take for you not to downplay the severity of a national crisis? This is on the cusp of a military siege and you're in here doing fucking damage control.

It's one street.

One. Street.

You are a prime example of my point.

It's some fucked up shit, but it's not on the scale some of you seem to almost want it to be.

Even a small section is town is too much.

??????????????????????????????????????????
As if they have the right to kill people for protesting, even for throwing stuff or looting.

This all has me thinking of the 2011 riots in London. I don't know if it's just because I'm American and this obviously hits a bit closer to home, but I feel like this situation is a lot more tense, if not scarier. Maybe it's because the police are at least implying with their gear and statements that, as absurd as it sounds, the option of mowing people down is somewhere on the table, whereas in London it was more about riot shields and a lot of the "action" practically looks like a rugby scrum. That's restraint. Am I blowing things out of proportion/being insensitive towards the UK riots, or you guys know what I mean?

Don't forget cops illegally telling people to turn off cameras and arresting reporters.

That's the thing that rubs me. I will never ever condone violence while protesting and I think personally it leaves a black eye on the whole thing. But this whole shutting everything down crap has got to go. I don't think even-minded conservatives, libertarians or liberals should stand for this kinda militarization of police. You can keep order just nice and fine without having this kinda response. It just seems so overwhelming.

Does cop semen taste like pepper spray

So, what are the facts you'd like to talk about? Is the media lying about being tear gassed at the McDonald's? Is Al..well..are people actually being harassed at all? Is this all a ploy? Not one sarcastic question. How do you interpret the questions being asked? Mine fist, please..and thank you, in advanced.

Funny thing about protests, people tend to congregate when they are doing it. Small pockets of people over an entire city wouldn't make any sense. People congregating in an area where an unarmed teen was gunned down, does.

Why are you trying so hard to play this whole thing down? This issue is a serious one that doesn't get enough discussion, we should be using this as a reason to change things, not playing it down.

It's thoughts like these that this will be brushed away in a week and nothing will change.

Your fucked up dude
This is some sick shit, never could I have imagined this shit happening in a civilized country like the US but there you go.
Who gives a fuck if its one street? They're ARRESTING REPORTERS FOR NO REASON AND AIMING GUNS AT INNOCENT PEOPLE

If you want to be helpful, it would be beneficial if you would stop trying to be the only sane person in an insane world with your only credentials being that you're local (I'm from the area as well). If you have information to offer or clarifications to make, by all means speak your mind. But your act of coming in here and calling out everything as bullshit while downplaying what people are hearing is growing extremely tiring.

Honestly, I want the truth. I think most people do, even if they have an inclination to believe one side more than the other. But even if you do know more than most, why you should be deferred to is not clear to everyone else in the thread. And yes, I'm making this my warning to drop the condescension.

It's always amazing when you walk in to a mass group of people on GAF saying one thing and try to disagree. Logic goes out the window, you're accused of saying things you didn't say, and no one cares that you're near the situation, have first hand accounts of your friends and family, and instead choose to stick with the narrative they want to believe. Even attacking you for it. It's a little disgusting and disturbing.

It's one street. It's not a war zone.

What the cops are doing is wrong and I'm on the side of the protesters.

But there is some serious hysteria going on in here.
