Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 12: Gwah, hah. Welcome to the Bowser's game.

Instead she'll let Game & Watch, and Ice Climbers go a couple generations before her.

That losers talk is.... well I can't put it nicely. It's just not a great thing.
The Melee retro characters have all had a leg up on staples like King Dedede, Diddy Kong, Wario.

The loser talk is a joke only understood by crass people. You think Dixie Kong will stand back and watch a Smash game go by without her with the likes of Wii Fit Trainer and a character better known as "My Unit" getting in before her? Uh-uh, girl. She out for blood.

I can see it happening easily, what has happened that made it less likely, I havent seen anything
I actually think we would have gotten news back in February if we were getting a DK newcomer. Instead we got Little Mac (who I think was revealed near the Punch-Out anniversary), with Diddy revealed a week after to line up with the NA release of Tropical Freeze. I pretty much gave up all hope for Dixie, or any DK newcomer, since then.

To add to the case for having Dixie Kong as a guarantee on the roster,

+ Robin/Lucina reveal means decisions were always in flux and never final.
+ would be silly not to add in another DK rep especially after its resurgence.
+ planned for Brawl anyway.
+ She's always third in line after Donkey and Diddy in games (DKC, Donkey Konga, Mario Baseball, Mario Hoops, Barrel Blast, etc.).
+ Besides Tropical Freeze, she'll most likely appear alongside Diddy in Diddy Kong Racing for Wii U if the rumors are true like she did with Diddy Kong Racing DS port.
+ She was a marketing tool for Nintendo to gloat that they're more aware and focused on including female characters now (Dixie in Tropical Freeze, Peach/Rosalina in 3D World, 3 versions of Peach in MK8 lol). Not joking, their press releases literally signaled them out.
+ If all else fails, Diddy clone with new neutral and Up-B moves.
+ Sakurai might perv out again and post a pic of her in a salacious position with another female.
+ She'll be in Smash eventually. But there's no way she'll have no-name losers (Chorus Kids, Shulk, Lucina, Robin, Rosalina, Greninja), canonically irrelevant losers (Mii, Wii Fit Trainer, Villager), and losers who needed their franchises to be resurrected (Palutena, Little Mac) to get one Smash generation ahead of her.

It's almost as if you added the last bulletpoint after a reasonable list of why Dixie would be in just to see how many people would call you out.

Personally I'd much rather Cranky than Dixie. Let's get both generations of Donkey Kong out in playable form.

So if we hadn't had the Gematsu leak would we all still be saying there is little to no chance of a new DK rep?

Without the Gematsu Leak? At this point I'd be thinking a DK rep is a shoe-in, a Retro character is almost guaranteed, a Rhythm Heaven rep is likely, and another Zelda character is possible. With Mewtwo's return a possibility.

Honestly, the last two newcomers would be SUPER unexpected if it weren't for Gematsu... which is a shame, in a way.

Does Dixie technically still have a chance, yes. Is she a shoe-in, no. It's just too late in the game to consider Dixie as a guarantee.

Likewise, I don't think we're gonna get a Zelda newcomer. Ganondorf (his TP incarnation) will most likely round out the Zelda representation for this game as far as playable characters go.

Think about it like this: we have 39 characters so far. Assuming the full roster tops out at around 50, that means only 10 or so characters would be unlockable - and the starting roster would be a whopping 80% of the full roster. By comparison, Melee's starting roster was a little over half the full roster, and Brawl's was a little over 60% the size of the full roster. Add to that the fact that in all likelihood there are still more characters yet to be revealed, meaning that the great majority of the roster (or even the whole thing) will be revealed pre-launch. If you're right that Sakurai wouldn't reveal any unlockables, then either there will only be five or six unlockables out of a roster of 50, or there simply won't be any unlockables at all, and we'll start with the full roster.

I think it's more likely that whether a character is unlockable or not has nothing to do with whether they're revealed. I doubt there are going to be any truly "secret" characters - with the Internet, word will get out sooner or later, so why hide them? Why not reveal them all and give all the newcomers fancy trailers? The way I see it, several unlockables have already been revealed.
IMO that just doesn't really matter. There just might be fewer unlockables this go around.

Let's say no characters are cut besides the obvious three. (Squartle, Ivysaur, Snake)

We have...what? Falco, Wolf, G&W, ROB, Ganondorf, Wario, Ice Climbers, Ness, & Lucas left, which is nine. (Really sorry if I forgot anyone lol.)

Let's say a maximum of three are revealed before launch. Thats six. Just because its only six veteran unlocks doesn't mean its not true IMO. Especially since its Sakurai, he does what he wants.

Let's say just for this hypothetical that both the Gematsu and Ninka leaks are right.

Shulk and RH Rep are the last starter newcomers.

Koopa Kids, Duck Hunt Dog, Dark Pit are three newcomer unlockables.

Doctor Mario and Mewtwo are two Super Veterans.

Thats a bare minimum of 11 unlocks, with three newcomers and two...Super Veterans.

Of course there could be couple more newcomers, but even if in the case that the leaks are fake, I'd still say atleast one more starter newcomer, with a maximum of two before launch. And a bare minimum of three unlockable newcomers. So thats still 9 unlocks. It doesn't have to be whole lot, just some nice surprises
that we will know anyway when the JP game launches...............lol...........

Of course, there is another scenario we can play out.

Sakurai has said he doesn't like any cuts, yes?

What happens if Sakurai really REALLY doesn't like any cuts. So much, that he brings back EVERY VETERAN EVER. (Pending Snake due to Konami, and Young Link...because.)

Ivysaur, Squartle, Mewtwo, Pichu, Doctor Mario, Roy. ALL IN AS UNLOCKABLE CHARACTERS! (Again, sorry if I forgot anyone....can have bad memories at times.)

All clones are still clones. Zero fucks given. Every character that has ever been in Smash gets in for all the fans. Now THAT would be some unlockables. Just because they were cut all in one game doesn't mean they can't return.

:D

Why are people still supporting gematsu? Its dead. Let it stay dead
It's not dead until the full roster is revealed. Getting Chrom wrong doesn't negate the eight he got right, which includes some truly impossible "guesses" like Wii Fit Trainer and Mii Fighter. If the Chorus Kids are playable then there's really no denying that Sal's source had access to legitimate info. I don't see the point in being so hasty about the situation -- it isn't black and white. The information being mostly correct and/or outdated is much more plausible than it all being a hoax.

That quoted 4chan post..... Is that someone's prediction or a supposed person in-the-know?

I would be THRILLED with that returning characters list....but now so much the remaining newcomers. I really don't feel Shulk and Chorus Kids are Smash-worthy.

As much as I would love for this to be true I'm pretty sure Sakurai stated somewhere a long time ago this would not be the case. It's a pretty unreasonable expectation tbh, but we can dream, right?
RIP Roy ;_;

The first leak and second leak have nothing to do with each other. He could have made up additional information for attention.

Leak 1:

Villager - Confirmed
Mega Man - Confirmed
Wii Fit Trainer - Confirmed
Pac-Man - Confirmed
Little Mac - Confirmed
Mii - Confirmed

Leak 2:

Palutena - Easy guess
Pokémon from X and Y - Vague
Chrom - Deconfirmed
Shulk - TBA
Chorus Kids - TBA

Shulk's inclusion would be the perfect resolution to Xenoblade's climb to relevancy (with successful fan demand getting the game localized, & gave it the popularity for a sequel that will be released worldwide from the start). As for Rhythm Heaven, the series is pretty huge in Japan. It's like how Punch-Out is for the rest of the world.

There really is no rhyme or reason to why certain newcomers were revealed at certain points outside of Mega Man and Pac Man being revealed at E3 because their 3rd party. Sakurai could have just as easily not shown off Palutena or Little Mac and saved them to be the final newcomer reveal. In a world where the Gematsu leak didn't happen and someone like Little Mac or Rosalina had not been revealed yet along with no boxing ring stage we'd probably be in a "all he can do is punch things Sakurai even said so" and "she's too new/irrelevant" or "I really don't see Mario getting another rep/no evidence of a punch out rep"

I believe the Gematsu leak was 90% right with outdated information and I'm pretty sure the last two newcomers will be Shulk and a RH rep, with maybe 1 or 2 more surprises that we don't know about. That said if you don't believe the Gematsu leak and believe 90% right = 100% wrong you have no reason to assume anyone is or isn't going to be playable at this point outside of characters who have been for sure deconfirmed.

I do love the games but I'm trying to keep my expectations in check :p . I also think Dixie is more worthy. ;)

So since we're talking about unlockables.....are you guys saying that every character revealed so far is expected to be on the starting roster? If so, that's incredibly disappointing. I was hoping they were just announcing characters whether they were in the starting roster or not. I feel like that means not many will be unlockable, which is something I very much enjoy. I wouldn't mind starting out with just Mario, LOL

Tonight's PotD will be Meta Knight related. You are crazy to think it will be Ganondorf or another character announcement.

...who wants to join me on the crazy train?

Personally I'd much rather Cranky than Dixie. Let's get both generations of Donkey Kong out in playable form.

I have wild fantasies about what a Cranky Kong newcomer trailer would be like.

In my kokoro heart he'd be portrayed by the guy who did him in the CG cartoon.

My POTD forecast? Tonight we get a post about the changes Meta Knight's received and we get a Ganondorf confirmation on like, Friday. Knock some socks off and all that.

I just remembered something...

And there is one more important thing...

When you have a battle mode that runs online like Basic Brawl, the problem of what to do with hidden characters arises. If one of your opponents chooses a character you haven’t unlocked yet, it will be spoiled for you immediately.

But even without this mode, given the proliferation of the Internet these days, the existence of hidden characters is going to get exposed anyway.

So, this time I’m moving in the direction of not being too hung up on hidden characters.

You can earn most characters by playing through Adventure Mode: The Subspace Emissary. For those of you who look forward to those encounters, I recommend you clear this mode before playing Basic Brawl.

That was seven years ago. I would imagine he's become even less hung up on hidden characters since then. There might not be any hidden characters at all.

Tonight's PotD will document Meta Knight's battle damage, but we'll also get info on Stages 2, which will nonchalantly confirm Ridley is a stage hazard.

Even with Meta Knight's confirmation, we are still around 4 weeks out from the game's Japanese release and still have no idea what the fate is of the remaining 13 Brawl vets plus whatever remaining newcomers there are. Secret characters are bound to happen unless we get either an info dump or more cuts than expected.

"Meta Knight's Final Smash has him transform into a giant flying reptilian creature (FYI Ridley is a Final Smash)."

Given how close we are to release and a number of "safe" veterans have yet to be revealed (Wario, Ness, Ganondorf, Falco, Game & Watch, etc.), I'd imagine there will be at least several hidden characters.

Edit:...unless he goes on a massive reveal splurge in the next four weeks or something. Either way, we won't have to wait long to find out!

We could get a character tonight or tomorrow, 2 characters next week, 2 characters the week after that, and 5 characters in an early September Smash Bros. Direct (the April Smash Bros. Direct also revealed 5 characters).

So is tonight the last noteworthy software release from Nintendo before Smash hits? I can't think of anything else coming that soon in Japan.

Man who cares about Dixie Kong? She is Diddy Kong with some pigtails and has the lamest power you could imagine. Honestly I'm not a huge fan of Donkey Kong games or its world in general. The following DK characters are interesting:

Donkey Kong
Diddy Kong

That is all (though Funky Kong in MKWii was the best).

Nintendo isn't publishing Hyrule Warriors in Japan. Smash 3DS is I think their next major JP release period, unless I'm forgetting anything.

Well then.

Meta Knight is Ridley

you can stop asking for Ridley now guys
