Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

Bruh I think what everyone is trying to say is Fuck The Scale. This injustice happening on any scale goes against what our judicial system stands for. I hope you understand that. Allow people to be outrage and maybe just maybe some change can occur.

Yeah, and I don't necessarily disagree. It's just weird when you see what appears to be an exaggeration of the scale of something happening very close to you.

And this is a perfectly reasonable response. Although, it's completely one sided. There are people most definitely having their riots violated, and then there are people throwing Molotov cocktails at the police. It doesn't justify shit, but there's an antagonizing force at play here as well. If there were just peaceful protests, as there are all day, this wouldn't be happening.

But god knows, something about that statement will be considered bannable so I'm out.

If there were just peaceful black people, they wouldn't be shot in the street while unarmed as routinely as they are.

You're right. There is an antagonizing force at play here. It's called institutionalized racism. You know, the thing that led this whole mess.

I just want to say a quick something that's been bothering me. I live in STL, and I just want to say that yes, all this shit is bananas, but not every cop out there is a complete asshole. I have a very friend who is a cop downtown, who's a good cop, and a great guy, and he's just as freaked out about all this as the rest of us.
I don't think all or even most cops are assholes, but from working with people with jobs in government, they job self-selects for people who are way too willing to go with the flow and faithfully obey orders.

And I guess we're going to see how faithful their obedience is.

I really don't know what Obama plans to do in response to all of this. I can really only see him practically repeating his earlier call for peace so we can start to "heal." We don't need that, we need CHANGE

What kind of action are you suggesting in this kind of situation?

Good question. Not exactly sure. Maybe tell the police how fucking out of line they have been acting. There's no question that the situation is quickly spiraling out of control, and something has to be done from higher up.

FBI murdered or helped murder black activists for years (decades?). As much as I would love a nationalized department of justice that actually defends ordinary people, nothing major will happen.
I'd like to think that a positive side effect of this modern surveillance state is that now even the common man or woman on the street can capture real-time picture and video footage of miscarriages of justice, all able to be distributed and mirrored near instantly. And if this access to information and footage doesn't change us and our structures fundamentally then we're doing it fucking wrong.

Its one thing to note apathetically that horrible things have happened in the past, but its an entirely different thing to watch those same injustices unfold in real time and have them not move you.

Dog info:

Ray Downs @RayDowns

1/2)White guy with dog came around a group of teens. Dog was sniffing around area. A few teens accused white guy of being a cop.

2/2) White guy got jumped. Other residents pleaded to stop. Several police cruisers came right away, chased kids. #Ferguson

so you roll up to a neighborhood like this:
ScreenShot2014-08-13at111131PM_zps282ca8ca.png

and wonder why the members of the community are acting like they are in a war zone? It's a fine line between these "riots" and Red Dawn

Didn't the situation in Iraq just resolve itself? I know this is a repeat segment from her usual airing slot earlier tonight but why repeat it if her point is now out of date?

Good question. Not exactly sure. Maybe tell the police how fucking out of line they have been acting. There's no question that the situation is quickly spiraling out of control, and something has to be done from higher up.

He has no authority over State and local cops. So he can say all he wants and he will get laughed at because it's considered a State Issue. Right now the only ones that can quickly do something are either the Mayor or Governor. The President deals with Federal level crap, Governor deals with local crap.

The same ones calling this a Police State Action will likely also criticize Obama if he were to step in. (Alex Jones and pals.)

Did you not notice them being peaceful until rubber bullets, flashbangs and tear gas started flying into the crowds and into their homes?

I'm pretty interested to know why there hasn't been much of a federal response yet. Not even in an angry "where is the President!?" way (although that's totally valid at this point), but it really does seem odd. Silence speaks volumes in this day and age, and while I'm sure the situation isn't being ignored, it's like... man, perception is reality in situations like this.

EDIT - Ooh, just saw that tweet. Timing!

It took Bush like 5 days to respown to Hurricane Katrina

CNN wasnt even covering this, only MSNBC has been none stop covering it out of the major news outlets

I personally don't believe all cops are assholes.

I think whoever made the decision that military equipment, snipers, and the like are necessary needs to be sat down and questioned about this though. I understand officers need to be kept safe, but why are these measures necessary? Because civilians could be carrying weaponry? The most we've seen so far is a few guys photographed using wimpy-looking molotov cocktails. Maybe those guys wouldn't feel the need to manufacture those if they weren't being marched down by law enforcement with said equipment.

I'm not attacking you or anything, so I hope this post doesn't have a hostile tone to it. I don't intend for it to come off that way.

Thanks for the dog/dude info. Hope there ok. Good that there was other residents there. Always some nasty/racist bits to a mostly peaceful protest.

I see why its lose/lose for Obama and of course, he needs to wait for details in order to calculate further, but for that reason he can't be trusted either.

CNN covered it a bit, but the were neutral and trying their best to say nothing against the police.

Let's be honest. Obama is just going to spew a bunch of words. Words that are going to mean nothing. In this kind of situation we need not words, we need ACTION.

We can only hope.

I think he can start with words. I think it'd be invaluable if the President unequivocally came down on the side of the people, forcefully and without apology, without any sops to the police and the difficult job they have to do or some such nonsense.

Release a statement saying the people have an unconditional right to assemble, call on the local authorities to withdraw the greater part of the police forces from the vicinity of the protesters, including all of the ones that look like they're from Seal Team Six.

He can't be a neutral referee here. These are Americans being besieged by their own government. He's gotta take a side.

Their are reporters on the ground in Ferguson literally being arrested for doing nothing wrong. Also their are reporters from several different tv outlets and and newspapers that have been teargassed and shot with rubber bullets for no reason and peoples civil rights are actually being violated right before our eyes by the police there and yet you wanna play both sides are guilty card. People like you are the reason stuff like this is allowed to happen.

Thanks for the dog/dude info. Hope there ok. Good that there was other residents there. Always some nasty/racist bits to a mostly peaceful protest.

Unfortunately, with this being the central issue, I feel stories like this (from all sides) will continue to happen.

Previously, I thought the police should keep their distance and employ HD night vision cameras to identify the trouble makers and do snatch 'n grabs tomorrow, but if there really is violence against people walking their dog then they need to move in and shut this down asap. Get enough police for a confident show of force and move in with small echelon tactics and just arrest everyone they get their hands on. Obviously, they don't want a full blown riot on their hands for a plethora of reasons. This should be ended tonight if there are people within the crowd using it as an excuse to lash out and attack innocent bystanders.

While this is a terrible event it isn't really comparable to the scope of a major US city going under water and thousands dying...The DoJ is investigating and I don't think Obama wants to say anything too much while that is ongoing.

I don't think you're understanding why you're getting the reaction you are. I think your perception here is that "only the prevailing narrative counts, and anything that doesn't support it will get shouted down." I want to make it clear that that's not what we're setting out to do. I can't speak for all posters or all mods, but my goal in moderation (when I'm reading this thread) is not to cull anything that doesn't support the "cops = evil, protesters = good" narrative. If you think people are getting things wrong and you have information to share, by all means, share it.

But do so in a manner that doesn't suggest that the people you're responding to don't know what they're talking about. Obviously, most of us in the thread aren't right there on the ground. We don't have first hand accounts. But people are watching live streams, viewing images, reading news sites and social media, watching the national media, and so on. In the age of information, there's going to be plenty of disinformation as well. None of us are omniscient, so it's going to be impossible to just intuitively know what's the truth, what's close to the truth but embellished a bit, and what's bull shit.

But more information is always welcome. As a local, you may very well have valuable insight. But you should be able to recognize that this is an issue that many people are fired up about and present your viewpoint in a less bombastic fashion. Further, you haven't made it clear why you've got it right and everyone else has it wrong. From what I can gather, I'm just supposed to listen to you because you're from St. Louis. And I'm not trying to sound like a jerk there. But I am trying to highlight that I don't understand why I'm supposed to take your word for it as though you're an expert on the matter. I'm not saying that you're less trustworthy than anyone else posting second and third hand accounts in here, but I don't think your "I'm just here to cut through the bullshit tone" is very productive.

Vile. Feel sorry for the guy.

Arresting everyone they can get their hands on would just make things worse.

prayers to our brothers and sisters in blue as the news media is continuously being completely one sided and fueling the fire.

If this is the way these rioters want to live, let them. Seal off the area and let them keep it, without law. We'll see how long they survive. Perhaps we can make it a reality show.

Seriously though, I would ask how the so called President of our country could watch this and do nothing. However, his history says it all. I pray our brothers stay safe and make it home safely at the end of each shift.

......Time to raise a militia. I would welcome one.

Mr. President get off your arse and fix this, if we lose one officer because you waited for the hood to calm itself the blood is on your hands.
Get the guard involved that is what you do when the problem is bigger than local LE can't handle.
OH! I see you can't do that might disrupt everything that you Dems are trying to foster. Just saying.
Not a Dem or republican just a guy who is tired of poor politics and yes I vote and no I didn't. Just in case you ask.

My sincere respect and honor with prayers go out to all LE across the country right now. It's Missouri today any town USA tomorrow.
This is going to be bigger and more violent in weeks and months to come.
How do we avoid using force on people who need force administered
Without inflaming the local citizens.
I'll tell you don't respond or do anything unless called and no lights and sirens when responding. Let them sort their own trash out and we just remove the bodies.
Put only Afro American officers in the hoods so they can no longer use race or color as an excuse.
Who the heck are you going to shoot in a 3/4 black population area?
You do the crime you do the time or you resist you catch a lump or a bullet if need be.
This is a survival business, we must survive. From what I read and heard they were fighting for officers gun.
Even if by chance the cop one of 800,000 I might add did shoot an unarmed man. Does this constitute an all out war against police and the good citizens of the country. Yes it does if your an idiot.

In America the gangs have taken over entire neighborhoods by use of force. When the police use force in an attempt to take the streets back for the good people, Sharpton and others cry foul. Antiseptic policing and polictcal correct policing does not work. Look how long ISIS has taken to take back a large part of Iraq. You know why? They don't care about law or colataral damage. Bad guys don't follow the law. That is a great advantage to them, especially when backed by these "special rights" groups. Also anyone who attacks a police officer is not UNARMED. Their sheer will to injure or kill an officer is their WEAPON.

Is this not an act of terrorism? How is it this is going on in any North American city, let alone an American city? I think it's time for the military to deal with this!

I feel for the poor young copper who will be screwed over because the 'community activists' are now involved. The worthless DOJ will be monitoring and the entire department will be under the microscope. Frickin lying 'witnesses'. Hopefully the copper's administration will not throw him under the bus!

Feel bad for the officer five years on force clean record which speaks for itself, then doing his job takes him to fearing for his life while having all sorts of criminal investigations being conducted against him. What has our society come to? What rule of law do we have anymore?

@Von, they don't want a race war, not just yet anyway. They know they better keep their hatred focused toward LEOs, as soon as they made it about race altogether and openly began attacking the white civilian population, the majority would rise up in self defense and then the 12 percent would realize exactly what 12 percent means. I can't speak for every part of the nation.....but in my area, their demise would come quickly, and it wouldn't be pretty.

"I would like to see him go to jail with the death penalty," she said, fighting back tears.

But any other time she would be against the death penalty....typical. Mom, it's too bad you didn't raise your little dead thug to respect and adhere to law instead of assaulting Law Enforcement and breaking the law. It's simple....don't break the law, work an honest living, live a normal life....and live your whole life without a bad experience with law enforcement. OR, be a thug and get treated like a thug, then if you happen to be black...accept ZERO self responsibility, and involve the largest racist organization on the planet, the NAACP. Is the black community as a whole really this ignorant? Don't they realize they are only hurting themselves and discrediting their own community as a whole?! Or, are they simply too ignorant to realize that the NAACP is JUST using them for cash flow? It isn't an accident that the NAACP sends instigators in to whip the crowd into a frenzy (which speaks volumes for the intelligence of the crowd!) then AFTER all the looting, destruction, vandalizing, assaults,...then they come back in and call for calm....but only AFTER the looting has grabbed national media attention so they can sit back with their hand out in the name of a skewed since of justice. They should infuse their community with education, anti drug campaigns, parenting skills, etc. with all that cash but they wont. They depend on their thugs for future money!
