Ferguson: Police Kill 18yo Black Male; Fire Gas/Rubber Bullets Into Protesting Crowds

I'm pretty interested to know why there hasn't been much of a federal response yet. Not even in an angry "where is the President!?" way (although that's totally valid at this point), but it really does seem odd. Silence speaks volumes in this day and age, and while I'm sure the situation isn't being ignored, it's like... man, perception is reality in situations like this.

EDIT - Ooh, just saw that tweet. Timing!

Man, they're really taking this cosplaying as the military thing really seriously

I just don't get how the cops approached this situation to begin with.

Why form these giants walls in the first place instead of just staying on really high alert in case looting happened again?

I guess the probably answer is because they feel like playing army, as people have said, but it just seems so dumb of them. Is it standard procedure to get this massively armed following civil unrest or something?

Just FYI, apparently Police were telling reporters that they are entering a war zone*. So saying "war zone" isn't something we're making up.

*From Rachel Maddow.

Yeah, it's rather telling that the police themselves are even saying that.

It says a lot about how they view the people they're supposed to be protecting.

facebook and twitter have vastly different news feeds and algorithims. facebook hides stuff. twitter hides nothing
I set mine to Latest News. Which means it should be showing everything as it comes in.

No one at all is talking about this on my feed. No one. At all.

All I had was one of the news blogs I "Like" posted a single thing about it.

Ferguson shows up in the "Trending" list next to the feed, but you have to click the unnecessary* "Show more" link to expand it from 3 trends to 10. Ferguson is #9 below The Muppets, Dog the Bounty Hunter and Michael Cera.

*Unnecessary because there's absolutely nothing below that list. So why even collapse it?

In the street right now? No, I'm not. I'm in a nearby community with friends and family all over, including in Ferguson.

Then you're getting the same information as us, maybe less. Probably less.

stop. posting.

log. off.

This is a huge fucking deal whether you chose to acknowledge it or not.

Are you there? Simple question and you've dodged it already. ARE YOU THERE?

Leave the dude alone. Geez.

News of a dude walking his dog getting punched out by protestors.

:(

Like he was just walking his dog is that neighborhood and got punched out? I would've have probably stayed indoors TBH.

Let's be honest. Obama is just going to spew a bunch of words. Words that are going to mean nothing. In this kind of situation we need not words, we need ACTION.

We can only hope.

The President is in a lose/lose situation. But I'm sure he knows, or atleast I hope, its better to lose and help out the people of the town...than to lose by doing nothing.

Basically, I hope he does the right thing.

Holy shit! How disgusting are these responses? I never said any of the things I'm being accused of. For fucking shame.

This is a terrible, terrible thing. The only point I was trying to make, to offer perspective for those of you not here, is that this fucked up shit is happening on a much smaller scale than people are making it out to be.

Bruh I think what everyone is trying to say is Fuck The Scale. This injustice happening on any scale goes against what our judicial system stands for. I hope you understand that. Allow people to be outrage and maybe just maybe some change can occur.

From Principal Deputy Press Secretary Eric Schultz:

Tonight, the President and First Lady attended the birthday celebration for Mrs. Ann Jordan at an event at the Farm Neck Golf Club. There were approximately 150 guests in attendance.

Among the attendees seated with the Jordans and the President and First Lady were former President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Valerie Jarrett and her mother Mrs. Barbara Bowman, Ursula Burns, Kenneth Chenault and his wife Kathy, along with other friends and family of Mrs. Jordan. President Obama honored Mrs. Jordan with a toast before dinner, as did Mr. Jordan and Secretary Clinton and others. The President and First Lady have known the Jordans for over twenty years, and were grateful to have been able to share this special evening with them.

The President and First Lady also were happy to have the chance to spend time with Secretary Clinton and former President Clinton.

A little color: in his toast for Mrs. Jordan, President quipped that he met Vernon and first, but liked Ann more. The menu consisted of surf and turf and pasta. The Obamas danced nearly every song. A good time was had by all.
Did they really need to release this?

We have perspective. The scale is small. If it were the entire city of Ferguson, the scale would still be small.

There is still a militarized police force actively terrorizing a community of people in the United States of America.

That is a big fucking deal. This is a big fucking deal. So yeah, sure, it's "only one block" where citizens of our country are having their rights grossly violated.

And this is a perfectly reasonable response. Although, it's completely one sided. There are people most definitely having their riots violated, and then there are people throwing Molotov cocktails at the police. It doesn't justify shit, but there's an antagonizing force at play here as well. If there were just peaceful protests, as there are all day, this wouldn't be happening.

But god knows, something about that statement will be considered bannable so I'm out.

I just want to say a quick something that's been bothering me. I live in STL, and I just want to say that yes, all this shit is bananas, but not every cop out there is a complete asshole. I have a very friend who is a cop downtown, who's a good cop, and a great guy, and he's just as freaked out about all this as the rest of us.

not saying all cops. just the ones in Ferguson.

"God's on our side" wooooow, what does this shit sound like. does this woman think her husband is doing God's work? but really idk what'd you can expect at this point. these police and their families clearly view the protesters and the rest of the community as less than human. i can only imagine the conversations prior to the police standoff tonight in these cop's homes. fuck these people.
